  1. I'd rather give David Duchovny an invitation to spring training.
  2. Go ahead and update with: Mike Fontenot $1,000,000 Jeff Baker $975,000 Angel Guzman $825,000 Tom Gorzelanny $800,000 Koyie Hill $700,000
  3. What's highly entertaining is when a minor leaguer without a non-roster invitation to big league camp appears in a major league split squad game. That leads to such classic lines as "Now stepping to the plate, old number 97!".
  4. Isn't this the exact situation for which God created substitute teachers?
  5. [expletive] John Grabow. Misplaced anger. [expletive] Jim Hendry.
  6. Not going to the Convention, but I do leave for fantasy camp in two weeks. Woo hoo!
  7. reliever we got from oakland in return for Miles + fox Does Gray still have options? Now that they have Silva, will they still try to keep Parisi from the rule 5 draft? Speaking of which, where does Patton start this season? AA? Iowa? Jeff Gray has one option year remaining. In fact, this year, we're lousy with relief pitchers with options remaining - Berg, Caridad, Gray, Patton, and Stevens. And those are just the ones with major league experience. There's also Gaub and Parker who are probably ready to contribute.
  8. On a reasonable, max 2-year deal, I'd be interested in Hudson. Otherwise, I don't think there's much out there that would be an improvement over what a Fontenot/Baker platoon is going to do. I'm not sure how much of a bad apple he is, but Felipe Lopez would probably be better than Fontenot/Baker.
  9. Leave the bullpen alone. The one thing that this organization is good at producing (or obtaining in trade) is reasonably effective relief pitchers. We've probably got around $10 to spend. Go get a genuine second baseman, Branyan, and Baldelli. If spring training rolls around and it looks like you can get Sheets or Bedard on a low-guarantee deal, see if Mr. Ricketts will extend the budget to $145.
  10. Unless the Bears are involved, I always hope to see teams in the Super Bowl that have either never been there or haven't been for a very long time. So... ...Saints versus Jets*! *Chargers or Bengals would be OK.
  11. Any way of telling how, if at all, that changes the numbers we've been going on in this thread? I think it knocks a million bucks each off of the following six players: Soriano, Zambrano, Ramirez, Fukudome, Dempster, and Lilly.
  12. This has been covered in these "Tracking XXXX payroll" threads before, but it doesn't seem necessary to include the prorated portions of a signing bonus in these numbers, unless it's clear that the bonus (or a portion thereof) will be paid in the year in question. It appears as though, in almost every case, the Cubs pay the entirety of the signing bonus upfront in the first year of the contract and tie that payment to a correspondingly lower "salary" in year one of a multi-year deal. It seems likely that team ownership is concerned about the cash flow; that is, how the money is actually paid out, year-by-year. That's probably the number that Hendry and other Cub leadership are referring to when they throw around payroll figures.
  13. I believe that link is wrong and Samardzija will be paid $2.5 for this coming season. Arizona Phil has allotted $10 total for the eight arb eligibles in his payroll analysis. And Soto will probably get between $0.75 and $1.0.
  14. Yes, Sheets or Bedard and a better second baseman. Leave the freaking bullpen alone.

  16. The word you're looking for there, Dave, is "resigned".
  17. Kinzer: "We're going to give Jim one last chance to overpa...uh, I mean...to match Washington's offer."
  18. This is why he was non-tendered. Capps' people figured someone would, and he's right. Neal Huntington wouldn't overpay. Offering Arbitration is a guarantee of overpaying. The Pirates & Capps were still talking early this week, although there is no optimism. The media reports state that $5.5MM of the money saved from the Bradley trade could be used this year, so I don't see how Hendry would be able to grossly overpay Capps. Especially considering the Cubs haven't filled their hole in CF yet. This seems peculiar, since only $5.0MM was saved.
  19. Maybe they're hoping that Jordan Schafer takes over in CF, Melky is anti-awful insurance, and they trade us Nate McLouth.
  20. What use do the Braves have for Melky Cabrera?
  21. Ellsbury is - I think - four years from free agency. San Diego might trade him for 12 potential years of team control of, say, Josh Vitters and Jay Jackson, especially if they could also get Milton Bradley on the cheap. If we were getting Ellsbury back to play CF, that would - in theory - allow us to eat more of Bradley's contract.
  22. Amongst the scraps, Coco Crisp is the one guy that I'd have some interest in. He's a top defender and, if he's healthy, he might be able to put up some decent numbers if you got him out of the Big Boy League.
