  1. Any guess what really horrible FA Bowden will sign this offseason to a really bad deal very early like he did with Guzman last year? Estes?
  2. I'd take him, if for no other reason than he'd can Buttermaker.
  3. is it safe to assume guzman's stuff can be compared to seattle's felix hern? i know felix is alot younger at 19 than guzman but he also has a 95+ fb & a killer slider. Guzman is much like a healthy Javier Vazquez.
  4. Getting Bradley would be fantastic. Until his first tantrum, of course. He profiles as a viable option in both CF and RF. I don't know if he'd go into Operation Shutdown if he weren't played in CF. I hope not. Assuming he wouldn't melt down at playing RF, having him in the fold would give Hendry flexibility in pursuing either a RF or a CF - based on what opportunities came along.
  5. Re: Cliff Floyd, why couldn't he play left and Murton play right? He could. Just be prepared for every single to RF with a runner on first to result in a first-and-third situation. MM ain't throwin' nobody out.
  6. I don't think any team is going to be anxious to use a 40-man roster spot on the likes of David Aardsma. Especially if they have to trade for him...
  7. Williamson's contract will pay him the minimum in 2005, and if he is activated, it will increase to $500,000. There is a $2 million club option for 2006. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/chc/news/chc_news.jsp?ymd=20050118&content_id=932256&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp
  8. I really don't think I'm prepared to spend $3MM to find out, which is what his option is. SW's option is for $2, not $3. I believe the source of your info is in error.
  9. Floyd has played exactly 66 games in RF in the past eight seasons. He's a DL stint waiting to happen. RF in Wrigley is notoriously difficult. The Cubs obviously consider that a tough spot to hold down defensively - Burnitz played 94.5% of the innings out there last season. Regardless of whether or not Floyd in RF would be a GOOD idea, it would represent out-of-the-box thinking, something the Chicago National League Ball Club is not known for.
  10. Does anyone here really believe that the Chicago Cubs would make Cliff Floyd their regular RIGHT fielder?
  11. It's a shame that because we have such a truly dreadful manager, we can't bring back a very valuable infield backup. Fire Crusty!
  12. Trade with florida for Juan Pierre, not sure what it would take ( Patterson, Hill and Mitre??) Sweet Mother of God.
  13. Serena, I believe October 15th is the date of interest for what I'm talking about. October 15: Minor league contracts expire for the current season; if a minor league contract has no automatic renewals left, the player becomes a minor league free agent.
  14. Lowe is an obvious target. There's the affair business. DePodesta signed him to a backloaded contract, got the cheapest and youngest year out of him, and now trades him to the awash-with-money Cubs. That's right out of the Moneyball playbook. He doesn't quite meet your ERA standard, but he'd be an AL guy moving to the NL, so maybe we could overlook it. Bronson Arroyo. Doesn't meet either of your criteria, but somebody in another thread mentioned Jason Jennings. Also doesn't meet either of your criteria, but our AAAA club will probably make Kip Wells and Mark Redman available. Please note that I'm not advocating any of these guys. Spend the money on offense!
  15. What is that supposed to mean? It means you either failed to carefully read Tedward's sentence or failed to comprehend it. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume it was the former. What he meant is that signing Giles will cost us (other than money) - at the very most - our second round draft choice. It may wind up costing us our third (or fourth, or fifth, etc.) round draft choice if we also sign a free agent (or free agents) ranked higher than Giles. It's kind of a moot point, since, in such a situation, we'd also lose our second round draft choice.
  16. What do you mean our very best 2nd round draft choice? They get the one that we have now. If we somehow get another 2nd round pick we hold on to that. (In my best David Spade voice) It's called the English language. Look into it.
  17. He was a fine player, but the only way Larry Walker ever gets into the Hall of Fame is if he buys a ticket. As it should be.
  18. Bruce, dinner's on me here in Houston, if you have no other plans. :D
  19. The deadline for adding minor leaguers eligible to become six-year minor league free agents to the 40-man roster is typically in mid-October. I believe, since we did not add Sing to the roster, that he is now free to sign with another club. If, however, he does not do so between now and the regular mid-November deadline to add minor leaguers to the 40-man roster, could the Cubs add him at that time? Or has that ship sailed? I'm not suggesting that that's likely, I'd just like to know what's allowable.
  20. "I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter..."
  21. What?!?!?!? I know 2b is a more offensive position but you are talking about getting rid of a guy who will make ~3M and has averaged 850 OPS and 16/20 in SB over his first 3 full major league seasons. Yeah, thats not talent. On top of what everyone else has said, Giles is going to make quite a bit more than $3 next season. Probably around $5.
  22. Betemit is not a top defender at SS. Furcal is. I imagine the Braves view him as the most unique, and, therefore, most difficult of their infielders to replace. They'll make him a good offer. It will be less than some others he gets. The size of the difference will likely be the determining factor in whether he stays or goes. John S. knows that keeping Giles and letting Furcal go will reduce their talent stock, while keeping Furcal and trading Giles will be less of a talent reduction.
