  1. Zero chance that anybody signs Nomar before the arb deadline. Zero chance that the Cubs offer him arb. It doesn't matter if he's Type A, Type B, or Type Q.
  2. I could go on, but now I'm even more frustrated that Nomar won't even land us a decent compensation pick. What does the folly of the ranking system have to do with us not getting a decent compensation pick for Nomar? Or did I misunderstand you and that's a separate complaint?
  3. Vance, how do we know what type FA Eyre is? Have those been established? I haven't seen the list. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/columnists/askba.html Scroll down.
  4. Either way, it's a better hitter's park than Wrigley, and Mench has been brutal away from it. I don't really want Mench, but this kind of analysis is not always foolproof in judging how a hitter will perform in new surroundings. It's certainly better than nothing, of course, and any attempt to acquire Mench should be tempered by these data.
  5. Just curious... Is Texas a far superior hitter's park when compared to Wrigley? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor Around 15% better.
  6. With the restructured contract of Chipper Jones, I'd see if Atlanta would rather just resign Furcal and trade Chipper to the Cubs. 5 & 10. End of discussion.
  7. I prefer Mench over Kearns. Not me. Not even close.
  8. Bradley is probably the better player than either, but I'd prefer Pierre and Wilkerson, if they're available and we have the trade fodder to get them. Assuming that there's no anecdotal evidence of Wilkerson having been a Steroid Boy. Pierre and Wilkerson are good players who are reliable and tough and swing from the left handed batter's box. Bradley is too much of a risk to count on, given the sorry state of our OF. That said, Hendry should have acquired him yesterday as insurance, if the reports are true and he could get him for a ham-n-egger or two.
  9. I like Novoa - he was intermittently impressive last season, but I'd like him to either be at Iowa as the 8th reliever or on another team in trade for a friggin' outfielder.
  10. Sure, but I'd prefer Pierre to Mench and slide the wife beater over to RF.
  11. For which spot are you talking about with those guys, top of the order or 5? I was talking about Wilkerson and Bradley as #5 guys, but I suppose they'd fit at #2 also. Something like Furcal-Pierre-Lee-Ramirez-"2002-2004"Wilkerson-Murton-Barrett-Cedeno is good enough if you can get "top 3 in the NL" pitching. That said, sign Giles!
  12. Oh well, any other viable, impact RF options (assuming the Cubs can't/won't sign Giles)? Define "impact". It's not a popular view on this board, but the Cubs don't necessarily need another .900+ OPS guy. They need a much, much better top of the batting order and a guy who can be slightly above NL average for the #5 spot in the batting order (2005 average: .271/.340/.454/.794). It would be strongly preferable if that guy hit from the left hand batter's box. If Wilkerson got back to his pre-2005 form, he'd be a good choice. So would Bradley, if he'd act like somebody.
  13. I had to laugh last night during the WGN sequence with Hendry. The first word out of his mouth was "obviously".
  14. Would that be Rich Hall, the sniglets guy?
  15. By the way, "Francis" does not bother me... Would you prefer "Psycho"? "I don't like nobody touchin' my stuff....so youse keep yer meathooks off."
  16. Wow, was that necessary? Sorry I forgot my spell check. How about commenting on the content of the post? Lighten up, Francis. I was just giving you the business. Spell check wouldn't have helped anyway. Your spelling was right. Just chose the wrong word. :D You were dead on about both guys being in the bullpen, by the way. Eyre's not redundant. Overpaid, but not redundant.
  17. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20051117&content_id=1269750&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc The Chicago Cubs added the lefty to the bullpen mix on Thursday, signing Eyre to a two-year contract with a player option for a third year. If Eyre exercises the option, the contract is worth $11 million.
  18. Yup. I should note I forgot one guy: Jerome Williams. If he returns, he gets arb money I believe, he'd likely be around $1.5MM or so? I'm almost certain Williams is not eligible for arbitration.
  19. It's safe to say that Hendry feels Eyre will compliment Ohman (or vice versa). He might even complement him.
  20. I'm only including: 1) Players who are under contract. 2) Players eligible for arbitration who I'm fairly certain will be on the team. 3) Players whose contracts are auto renewable who I'm fairly certain will be on the team. Patterson falls into none of those categories. Nor Hairston. Nor Macias. Nor Novoa.
  21. Currently under contract: Aramis Ramirez - $10,500,000 Derrek Lee - $9,416,667 Michael Barrett - $4,000,000 (estimated) Henry Blanco - $1,500,000 Kerry Wood - $12,000,000 Greg Maddux - $9,000,000 Mark Prior - $2,750,000 Ryan Dempster - $5,000,000 Todd Walker - $2,500,000 Scott Williamson - $2,000,000 Glendon Rusch - $2,750,000 Neifi Perez - $2,500,000 Scott Eyre - $3,666,667 (estimated) Subtotal #1 - $67,583,333 Add Zambrano at $6,000,000 and Murton, Cedeno, Ohman, and Wuertz at $350,000 each. Subtotal #2 - $74,983,333 That leaves about $25 million, assuming a payroll of $100 million.
  22. The contract is worth $11 only if Eyre exercises the third year option.
