  1. *Points to CPatts post* That's the reason - city ordinances. With Daley running Chicago (White Sox fan and also all-around nepotistic jerk), the Cub org also needs to tow the line pretty closely. Most of the rest of the postings to this topic are MORANIC. ;-) (Mis-spell is intentional - it's an NSBB joke, based on a mis-spelled sign by Cards fan.) Im pretty sure its almost all Tom Tunney and the residents of Lakeview, not Daley.
  2. the cubs are in a tight spot...they need to see if nomar's worth re-signing, but at the same time, they need to see if cedeno's ready to step into the job next season. unless cedeno plays 2b (and you bench -- and tick off -- your 2006 2b) that ain't gonna happen. plus, the cubs seem to still think they're in this thing... Hmmm, if only he had 100 game opportunity to prove himself this year....
  3. Well if the Cy Young was going to a team, it would go to the cards...unfortunatley its supposed to go to a pitcher (I acknowledge that often wins are considered although we all obviously know little stock should be put in them). What you dont mention that against playoff teams, Clemens ERA is 1.89 and Carps is 2.47. And against winning teams Clemens ERA is 1.2 and Carps is 2.6....hmmmm. Why dont you stop quoting team statistics and start quoting something the pitcher has quite a bit of control over.
  4. I sincerely doubt that the difference Soriano and Walker is worth 6.5 games. the way soriano is hitting on the road this year, it might be worth 6.5 games the wrong way :D
  5. Is Remlinger really worse against right handers and what does that have to do with Adam Dunn?? I think that was clearly a mistake (either by Stone or the interviewer). Stone meant to say that Remy is worse against lefties, otherwise it would be A - false, and B - irrelevant w/ Dunn at the plate. And ive never heard of this Sanderson Machado guy...wonder if hes related to Anderson Machado. Thats some quality reporting.
  6. I do the same thing!!! For example, that adds 95 points to Podsedniks OPS. Plus the pressure it puts on the pitchers when hes on base and subsequent advantage it gives to hitters behind him.
  7. From a strict OPS standpoint, Walker is currently ranked 10th among 2B in the majors. 4 of the 9 guys ahead of him (Vidro, Cantu, Biggio, Polanco) are within a few percentage poins of Walker, so you can easily make the argument that Walker is 6th, which is pretty good. But, the 5 ahead of him (Giles, Soriano, Utley, Kent, Roberts) are significantly better than him, so I would look to see how to acquire one of them, although I doubt Atlanta, Philly or Baltimore would trade theirs. From the Cubs standpoint, I don't look at it so much as $2.5M vs. $7.5M. I cling to the belief that if Jeff Kent (batting 4th) or Alfonso Soriano (batting 6th) were in this line-up, we'd be a lot closer to the WC lead, if not leading it. I too was quite surprised by your opinion hoops. Soriano has shown that hes one of the better hitting second basemen, but his park adjusted numbers (as CPatt alluded to) show little to no difference between him and Walker. Walker has an advantage in OBP, Soriano in slugging. Walkers' tendency to get on base is a big need for this team, not to mention the difference in Ks. IMO only if their salaries were the same would I consider Soriano an improvement over Walker. For the money, Walker + Lawton>>>>>Soriano.
  8. We have one and he just hit a monster home run...FINALLY!
  9. Matsui would be great, but he isn't necessarily a free agent. He has a clause, but he most likely won't become a free agent, I forget the circumstances. No way it will happen. Matsui will be a Yank for life. They love him there, he loves it there and they make so much money in the Japanese market
  10. Not necessarily. The fact that a trade was actually made says one of 2 things. He either cleared waivers and then the trade was made or Theo told Hendry Boston will claim him if and only if the Cubs pay part of his remaining salary. Hendry then countered with throw in a prospect and you got a deal. If Boston put in a waiver for him (per tedward) then he could not have cleared waivers. At that point the cubs had three options. 1) Let him go to Boston and let them take on the entire amount of remaining salary, 2) Work out a trade with Boston or 3) Pull him back off of waivers and keep him for the rest of the year. The second scenario you pointed out makes sense, Theo had made an agreement with Hendry before putting in the waiver claim as if Boston did not place a claim on him the only team left would have been the whitesox who obviously would not have claimed him and we would have been left paying nearly all of his remaining contract with no minor leaguer to show for it.
  11. Did Remmy clear waivers, or did the BoSox put a claim in for him? By your last sentence I assume he cleared. I was listening to the Wilmington Blue Rocks (BOS High A) earlier today, and the announcers said that the Bo Sox did put in a claim for him. They found it interesting, because the Yankees have made it known that they would be putting in claims / blocking to keep Boston from making any improvements to their roster. I guess the Yanks doesn't think too highly of Remmy. Well then that means that the cubs could have let him go to Boston for nothing in return and would not have had to pay a cent for him for the rest of the year. From what I understand about this prospect, that probably would have been the preferred transaction, depending on how much money we sent.

  13. Its my understanding that its actually written into his contract that he gets an inning off.
  14. Thanks, I thought it might be but was too lazy to look it up. Im good friends with his nephew.
  15. Just a public service announcement...his name is Ofman.
  16. ichiro hits a lot of line drives. he's 9th in the AL this year in ld%, and this has been a pretty down year for him. Exactly, Neifi puts the ball into play all the time too, he just sucks. its not that hes unlucky, its that he just sticks the bat out there and usually hits a weak grounder. Sometimes it bloops over the third basemans head. At the beginning of the season his numbers were great because he was getting lucky, now hes not and his true numbers are shining through. Francouer might be getting lucky, but its really tough for an outfielder to catch a ball that is half way into the first deck :D
  17. For what its worth, I have heard rumblings from people who know Girardi that he absolutely HATES the cubs organization. He was under the impression he was being groomed to be a big part of this organization, but instead was thrown out on his butt. Again, this is all second hand knowledge and circumstantial, but I'm fairly certain that Girardi would never never ever come back. Im not completely sure of the circumstances of his departure, does anyone else have any info?
  18. Hes not a FA, nor will he be a FA until after the 2007 season. In fact hes some one I'd love to pick up for this team. Rusch does us no good and if we really plan on giving Pie a shot next year, then Patterson cannot hit enough to be a corner outfielder and we need to get rid of him. These coincidentally are two big needs of the Angels with Escobar going down and Finley and Davannon sucking big time. With K-Rod and Shields, Donnelly is their 7th inning man. Ive said it before, but itd be nice to pick up Donnelly for our bullpen as a back up plan incase Dempster decides to leave. And maybe pick up one of their less heralded prospects like Nick Gourneault.
  19. Sorry, miscomunitcation here, I was just responding to . I just was pointing out that you dont have to worry about being classified as that. I didnt mean you cant classify yourself.
  20. First of all we dont classify people on this board. Thats a no no. Second of all, I was sorta jokingly projecting the 2008 outfield, the one weve all been dreaming of. Dusty will be lucky to still be the cubs manager next year and will definitely not be here in 2007 or 2008.
  21. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2005/08/06/some_second_thoughts_about_bellhorn/?page=2 Per Rotoworld About a 0.00001% chance of him becoming a cub again, but wow, what an upgrade over macias...of course macias is hitting 294
  22. Dunn likely gets a 5/60 deal if not more than that. I'd do 5/60. As would I. But the important thing is that if Cedeno can play SS well, Pie can play the OF well and a young pitcher can join the rotation and pitch well, the Cubs will easily be able to afford 5/60 and then some. But, unless the Reds will trade him, he won't be a FA until after the 07 season. So thinking about signing him now is a bit premature. It's not like a player with his value will be non tendered. And by that time we will have Murton, Pie, and Harvey in the OF :D
  23. But on topic, say Dusty does leave. Who's gonna take his place? Sarge? Does anyone else recognize the possibility that whoever takes Dusty's place might actually be worse? Grady Little
  24. Same as Maddux, the option vests with 400 IP in '05-'06. I'd say it's really unlikely that he automatically vests. Thanks...so the option doesnt automatically vest. Does it then become a team option? If so, for how much and what is the buy out? And yes, unless wood pitches 320 innings or so next year, Id say its highly unlikely to auto vest.
  25. Not at my own computer so I dont have access to the bookmarked contracts site but I'm pretty sure Wood's 2007 option automatically vests if he reaches a certain number of innings in 2005 and 2006. I think 300. IIRC, then that means that Kerry would not only have to stay completely healthy, but also pitch extremely well in order to reach that mark. Which if he did, Im sure the cubs would have no problem bringing him back. However, if he doesn't we may be able to get out of the contract a year early. Can anyone validate this?
