  1. Problem is though, we would need the NL east teams to more than beat up on each other since the Marlins going 11-10 would put them at a better record than us. We would need the Mets/Nats to do just well enough to knock the Marlins and Phillies under 500 but not well enough for them to be more than a couple games over 500.
  2. Hoops- I agree, but I'll be awfully disapointed if we sign Damon. He'll be a guy everyone is complaining about 3-4 years from the signing, wondering why Hendry spent $30M on his .240/.320/.375 line when he's 41 years old and rotting in CF. Don't worry about it Stuy. Damon will be an Angel before he ever becomes a Cub. Arte Moreno will make Steinbrenner and John Henry work hard to get Damon. Per Rotoworld
  3. how likely though is a scenario where hendry would trade Lee right after the season he had. Im behind it if it nets us a huge return, but the PR departmant would have a field day answering hate mail, and angry phone calls. also, wat are the chance hendry goes out and gets Manny and a suitable replacement at 1B after that type of deal goes through, and then go after a millwood or burnett? The dodgers are giving up an awful lot in that situation, but in principle it sounds good. The Reds are getting a ton, they can give up Bergola, but I'd get some one to move to the Brewers for Overbay, whoever that is. Maybe downgrade on Guzman and include that prospect to the Brewers.
  4. It depends on who you get to replace Lee. In my hypothetical where we get Overbay as well, you don't lose much defense at 1B. CPatterson (or anyone else), do you know anything about Overbay's reach? I'm a pretty big fan of his, but I don't know much about his defense. Would you consider him to be a gold glove candidate? Admittedly, I haven't seen him play very much, but he scores very highly with statistics like Rate, RAA, and RAR throughout his career. His ZR isn't very high compared to other 1B, but that's probably less reliable than the previous 3 in determining performance. I wouldnt consider Overbay Gold Glove, but of course only one player in the league can win the Gold Glove (and in the scenario above Lee is still in the league as well as Helton and Pujols). But I would consider Overbays defense very very above average.
  5.  Geez, give it up already. "They better get some top-notch players for him..." hehehe, that's a good one. Everyone in baseball is lined up for Patterson's services, you know it. Face it, if GMs in baseball all have anti-CPatt sentiments, what the heck is the point in trading him? If no one in baseball wants him, we'll only get a bag of magic beans for him straight up and his value in a package would be negligible, meaning we'd have to give up some top-notch guys along with Patterson. Trading him is boneheaded and foolish unless you can actually get something of actual value to this team or even to the farm system. Considering plenty of you think that no one in baseball would want him for that kind of price, that won't be happening. As for his replacement? Well... In the farm system, Pie isn't ready, Bacon & Greenberg are utility men at best, and Calvin Murray could potentially surpass Jose Macias in offensive futility. And if you want to acquire a guy like Damon, great! Sign him to a 6 year contract and keep paying him big dollars when he's past his prime and on the decline. I'm sure everyone will be loving that deal in the future. I know lots of people have it out for Corey and have him as a scapegoat for why the Cubs faltered this season. I'm not one of them. I don't want to trade Patterson for the sake of trading him since it would open up a Catch 22 at CF. He's relatively cheap, above average defensively, and even at his current level could still be stuck in the 7 or 8 spot without causing much trouble. I could live with that until Pie is ready, be it some time in 2006 or 2007. Actually its a catch 15...15 of course being JH Jrs number. We should get what we cant for Corey and go with Hairston as the starting CF in 2006.
  6. When your play by play guy laughs at a swing youve made, you know you suck.
  7. he's playing. That's the most I can hope for with dumbass managing the team. Although limited ABs, a 1000+ OPS against lefties I would hope would hit a bit higher
  8. That works out as a straight up Lee for Dunn trade. While not a bad trade, I think we could do better. Id look to have LA also throw prospects to Washington to get Guillen. Hairston Overbay ARAM Dunn Guillen/Nomar Nomar/Guillen Walker Barrett That lineup would undoubtedly lead the NL in OBP and be extremely extremely cheap. Thinking about how cheap that lineup would be, it might be possible to acquire Manny instead of Guillen. As mentioned in another thread, if the Bosox plan on getting rid of Manny they have to do it this offseason as he will have a no trade clause next year, I believe. This lineup would be amazing and only slightly more expensive than the 2005. Hairston Overbay Manny Dunn ARAM Nomar Walker Barrett
  9. Actually, other than Lofton, who's a FA after this season, the Phils have Jason Michael, who I covet (see the $50 million thread), and Shane Victorino, who, as RotoWorld notes: I can see the Phils re-upping Lofton for another year and easing Victorino in, which makes Michael tradeable. Would they take Patterson and an arm or two? Probably would have to be a halfway decent one. Jerome Williams? With Victorino why would the Phils want Corey? Anyone know why LA declined to pay the 25K to take him back this year after the Phils outrigthed him? He did struggle big time in AAA, but had a studly AA the first half of 2004.

  11. Do the Orioles have anyone that could upgrade the Cubs? Other than Tejada obviously, I doubt they're trading him and I can't think of anybody else on their team I would want. Erik Bedard, but Id want a lot more than that. Markakis (sp)? Yeah I'd like that, that'd be a whole lot more :D
  12. What am I, a doctor? :D Yay for merging threads! But seriously, if a doctor says he will be ok, then Id take the risk, but there are better options that available as the aformentioned Overbay.

  14. The same reason people think Furcal, Burnett and Giles will all sign with the Cubs with no other teams showing interest. FYI the dodgers have a AA that could beat the Reds. A few players from that team would be a smart thing to acquire for a small market team who has 4 OF, especially when the one they are getting rid of will be over 10% of their salary. As CPat mentioned Prince Fielder is 2006 starting 1B for the Brewers. The brewers have publicly stated that they would find a way to get Overbay in the lineup. However, Overbay has never played an ML inning at another position and is light hitting for a 1B, let alone a corner outfielder. Especially when your corner OF is manned by your two best hitters by far. Hes not going to replace Brady Clark either, so unless he learns how to throw righty, hes going to the bench or to be traded. My money is on him being traded. We know the Brewers wouldn't have an issue trading with the cubs as all reports said the cubs were deep in discussions for Kolb. Theres nothing a small market team needs more than young cheap pitching prospects and thats what the cubs have.
  15. Id love to see Corey and Rusch (assuming he picks up the option) to LAA for Donnelly. Although is GB/FB is a bit scary in Wrigley, before this year HRs hadnt been a problem. He has a good ERA, very good WHIP, BA, OPS, K/9. Addition by subtraction plus we get a pretty good set up man. Id pick up a couple million too or thow in a mid level prospect.
  16. Drop it down to 150 PAs and hes 60th (with the only player not expected to contribute heavily in 2006 being a certain cardinals lifetime minor leaguer). But I dont think Hoops' point was to say that Burnitz is an average corner OF, but rather to analyze who would be an upgrade. But yes, I agree there are many more than 34 players on that list.

  18. I could live with your team. But I would like to see more of an upgrade in the OF (a la Johnny Damon), but that would push the payroll to a (for us) absurd level. And I have a gut feeling that Dusty would play Conine way too much - just a hunch. What about Glavine as a Cub? Just curious. Bottom line is that Neifi has got to go. It's got nothing to do with Neifi, but has everything to do with Dusty. I'm big on Cedeno, and no way does he get off the bench with any regularity if Perez is a Cub next year. Who would Damon be an upgrade over? Floyd, Giles, Dunn, or Manny? If you mean to upgrade at all OF positions, then just play Hairston over Patterson.
  19. I think the real question is what on earth happened to his walk rate in 2000? Looking at his career stats, taht year is definitely and abberation. His IsoD never came close to reaching the .099 mark before or after that. One stat to look at, is his pitches/PA which was a decent amount higher that year than any other. Could also be, he was trying to hit for more power after that year, or could be just first year in the league I guess. Either way, I wouldnt expect him to go back to 2000 form, and ESPECIALLY not under the cubs instruction.
  20. Can I still get in?
  21. No way he comes that cheap. I dont know, I wouldnt necessarily say that. Id compare Dempster as a closer to an inexperienced poor mans Wickman (at the time he signed his contract in 2002), who after his first four years as a closer (25, 37, 30, 32 saves) got a 3 yr 16M contract.
  22. Yeah, but those numbers at AA are right up there with everybody else on the same list. Doesn't that qualify as a rebound from a bad start? Indeed, it's a strong rebound. But there are pitchers who had better stats for the full season, because they did better in April (Ryu, for example). Plus hes repeating the level
