  1. Marshall has too much potential to give up in this deal, even if it meant moving Jones. Another pitching prospect maybe. Griffey has an injury history, but his bat would make the lineup formidable with him hitting between Lee and Ramirez.
  2. I totally agree. I thought Jones could be a useful player as a 4th OF with his lefthanded bat and ability to play all 3 spots (I didn't say play well), but we overpaid for him big time. If he was making $1million and filling in every few games for Pie, Murton, and Soriano I wouldn't really care. But, he's starting, not producing and playing horrible defense. I'd eat part of the salary and trade him for anyone in the Rockies organization if that were possible.
  3. I haven't followed Tejada this year, but I like HoopsCubs idea of how we have our IF and OF set up with him. Definitely something I could live with.
  4. My rationale was Hunter can play RF and in order to get rid of Jones we almost have to include Murton or a young arm. If it was someone like O'Malley would that make it better?
  5. Hey all, Don't post often, but I read the forum pretty much every day. I was listening to all the discussions on local radio that while the Twins would want Hunter back, they'll probably look to move him if they're out of contention. With Morneau and Santana contracts coming up they probably can't afford to keep him anyways. Additionally their end of the rotation has been weak and Bartlett isn't getting it done at SS for them. I was thinking something like Jones, Murton, Izturis, and a young arm (Marshall, Marmol, etc) for Hunter. Jones takes over center for them (plus they have a youngster waiting in the wings and Murton takes over LF with Cuddyer in RF. Izturis might be able to produce more than Bartlett and keeps them strong defensively at that position. The young arm take the #4 spot with Santana, Bonzer, Silva, and Slowee rounding out the rotation. Granted Hunter might leave at the end of the season, but I look at this trade as Murton and the young arm being the value. We can keep Floyd as an extra OF and use DeRosa as an emergency OF if necessary and send Pagan back to the minors. Soriano, Pie, Lee, Ramirez, Hunter, Barrett, De Rosa, Theriot is a pretty great lineup.
  6. I think Jones has played well, but Pie will be on the team permanently sooner or later so he's likely to be moved. Truthfully Floyd makes more sense with Jones ability to play CF. That being said I've heard rumors with the Twins OF injuries Jones might interest them. With their pitching woes in the latter part of the rotation they might be interested in Wade Miller as part of a package for some minor league prospects, IMO
  7. I totally agree. Theirot should be SS. I would put Soriano in RF and let Floyd and Murton platoon while they move Jones in a deal hopefully with Wade Miller.
  8. I don't see any kind of move being made until the season starts. Then if Pie rips up the minors, the rotation 1-4 looks solid, and Guzman really pushes for #5 along with either Miller and/or Prior healthy, then I could see something with Jones, Miller, and another pitching prospect being moved as part of a bigger trade.
  9. True, but in a lineup like that all he'd be expected to do is play defense. Or realistically that's all the pressure that should be put on him if we went that route.
  10. If we dealt Jones and Dempster and got Hunter back, I'd be all for it. LF-Murton, CF-Hunter, RF-Soriano for now. Once Pie comes up, move Hunter to RF, Soriano to 2B and DeRosa to SS/bench.
  11. I'm kind of surprised we haven't had any interest in Huff. He's left-handed, has some pop, and can play a corner OF spot. From ESPN.com talking about available free agents: .... and Aubrey Huff, the only player out there who can market himself as either a corner infielder or outfielder. Huff's numbers the last five years actually blow away J.D. Drew's. So he is suddenly a major target in Texas, Baltimore, Colorado, Pittsburgh and other places. And he could still wind up back in Houston. Huff in RF with a Murton/Jones platoon in LF and Soriano in CF would almost make it so I could live with Izturis. 1. Soriano CF 2. Murton/Jones LF 3. Lee 1B 4. Huff RF 5. Ramirez 3B 6. Barrett C 7. DeRosa 2B 8. Shortstop position.
  12. I think you're right for the most part, but if they got someone who was a clear upgrade at a corner OF spot they'd consider it. I'd love to see Lieber back. Eyre and Jones for Lieber sounds good to me.
  13. It depends on how much and how long. In my mind it's basically setting up a competition for the 4th and 5th starter between Marquis, Miller, Prior, Cotts, Marshall, Guzman, Marmol, and the rest which is fine by me. I'd rather spend the rest of our money upgrading the offense now.
  14. I agree. If we get Schmidt, the rest would almost be icing on the cake. Whether it be Lilly, Meche, Duke, Jennings it wouldn't matter, even though I have preferences.
  15. Is durability an intangible? Drew is probably more talented, but I thought he was a **** ever since his initial refusal to sign with Philly. If he's a Cub I'll cheer for him, but I'd rather not have him at all.
  16. I'll be amazed if they sign Schmidt, just because of the aggressiveness of the offseason. I figured signing Lilly and Marquis, plus a trade for Jennings would pretty much be all we'd see. I agree that length of the contract is what would get it done.
  17. I totally agree. Murton could platoon and provide inexpensive insurance if someone is injured. It probably wouldn't go over very well, but I'd consider putting Jones in CF too.
  18. St.Paul Cub

    Bonds

I can only imagine how much attention he gets on the media. ESPN's attention is bad enough.

    Bonds

Should you throw anything onto the field? No. Was it hilarious? Yes. I agree that you shouldn't throw stuff, but a plastic syringe with no needle thrown 15 ft in front of him is not in the same league of severity and stupidity as throwing full beer (in cups or bottles), batteries, or anything else like that. The level of righteous indignation is amusing. Harold Reynolds on Baseball Tonight made it sound like that was the end of baseball right there. That's amusing to me because Harold was one of many players who didn't say anything about steroid use happening around him and I think ESPN is a little culpable for the creation of Barroid Bonds too.
  20. Thanks for the updates. I'm following online, but it's not the fastest thing. Of course I think watching it live I'd have had a heart attack already. Murton = The Natural
  21. I was reading in Sporting News that he's hitting between 93-96mph. Sounds like they're going to start him in AA, but he could be called up mid-season from their reports.
  22. Or that the Cubs might get some kind of payroll subsidy from AARP if they acquire Julio Franco to go with those two.
  23. I agree. Especially if we don't have to break up the rotation. He's not the impact bat we want, but I think he can make an impact.
