  1. I totally agree. Thanks for stopping in and giving us the inside info Bruce.
  2. You are forgetting that Santana has an NTC and he'll need to be signed to an extension, which will likely be in the neighborhood of 6/150m. The Cubs do not have that kind of money at their disposal. That's why I did say we wouldn't get Fukodome, but I agree even though it's not my money. It's more likely that almost any team is going to wait and sign Santana in the offseason than give too much in terms of prospects now and give him the major money.
  3. If they're talking Hamilton for Marshall, I'd do it. I wouldn't consider Hill or Marmol though. Does sound too good to be true, but with some of the pitching out there Marshall might have more value than we think as was mentioned. I hate to trade young pitching and think Marshall has done reasonably well, but this could be one of those "smaller" deals that makes a huge impact. Dare I even say that Hamilton and someone like McLouth would allow us to trade Pie and Hill for Santana? If MN wants Ellsbury and Lester from Boston, wouldn't that be a comparable package. That would prevent us from being over loaded with lefty starters (which has been mentioned as something Hendry would think about). It would probably take us out of getting Fukudome, but would that major upgrade in pitching (Santana, Z, Lilly)be enough to improve the team with a minor upgrade in offense(SS, CF, and RF being manned by Riot, Cedeno, McLouth, Hamilton, and Murton)?
  4. That's the offer Minnesota news was mentioning as likely today, but I'm not sure if Masterson/Bowden were mentioned specificially. They were also saying Santana's agent is looking at 6 years $150 million, so take that for what it's worth.
  5. I think you might be onto something, especially with not wanting 3 lefties in the rotation. That being said I think Hill and Pie would be appealing to the Twins. Since Garza is gone, if they trade Santana they'll need one proven pitcher and probably another prospect. Pie might have some appeal as they could have Young as a corner OF. I'd love to hang onto Hill and Pie, but Santana would give us a dominant pitching staff and a player of his caliber is very tempting.
  6. That's a departure for the Twins to take on someone with Young's character issues, even if he is very talented. I think it's probably a good move for both teams.
  7. Agreed. Nathan is a great closer, but when I look at the lineup bullpen/closer doesn't strike me as where we should be focusing.
  8. Old news or new news, the idea of Dempster starting is horrible. We'll trot him out for a few weeks and he'll be 0-5 with a 7.64 ERA and then we'll either move him to the pen or release him. I have no problem giving the young guys a shot, but I have a feeling Hendry is going to be way to enthused about starting Dempster and try to push it even though he will suck in a starting role. Hopefully Lou can push back enough that the experiment ends before it fails miserably.
  9. I think it's not just a Yankee fan mentality. The sportswriters would put together possible Knick trades along the lines of Kevin Garnett for Jerome James, Channing Frye, and Steve Francis for years.
  10. I totally agree. I think if we upgrade the other positions enough we can get by with Pie's offense still developing since his D is great.
  11. This is a weird trade. I guess anything we get for Monroe would be fine by me. They said on the radio that Minnesota's rationale might be that Monroe is really close with Hunter and that might be used as leverage for him to sign for a hometeam discount. Otherwise Monroe becomes a platoon replacement for Hunter. 8-[
  12. I totally agree. For the price he doesn't really have any upside. He's an average pitcher who can work a lot of innings, but that's about it. I'll give him credit as he seems to do enough to keep the team in the game, but he's hardly impressive. I really don't want Dempster starting, but think there's other options (including rolling with a youngster as #5 if Prior isn't healthy) that are better than blowing money on Silva.
  13. I hate JD Drew. I'm have no interest in him and I think that would be the ultimate gut shot to my loyalty as a Cub fan. This would dwarf Lee Smith for Schiraldi and Nipper AND letting Maddux go to Atlanta and signing a bunch of scrubs to replace his production. PLEASE JIM, NO JD DREW!!!!!!!
  14. well that would be both comical and a huge letdown on many levels I think that's what it is.
  15. When I mentioned his defense, I see him as our RF. He can still play CF, but I'd rather have Pie there and upgrade RF and SS as others have mentioned. He always has been and always will be much better than Jacque. 5 years is too long though.
  16. I think he brings power, defense, and leadership, but I also think he's going to get overpaid. I think he'd be a great fit (I know most on this board don't). I really don't remember anything with him being any more or less active than any other players in the community.
  17. Why would the Twins be taking on salary with Santana unsigned, and why in the world would they trade Garza with Santana unsigned? Makes no sense. I agree with you. that's just what I heard. Maybe they're figuring Hunter is gone for sure and Bay would be some OF pop to go with the replacement in CF. I thought Santana had 1 year left, but maybe they figure on keeping Santana with the money they save from Hunter not being resigned. No idea what they're thinking. As far as Bay, it is a worry that his numbers have regressed the last few years, but maybe a change of scenery does him good. If we could get him for a reasonable cost, I'd definitely be interested. He'd still probably out play what we're throwing out there now.
  18. According to the media here, they had some serious discussions about Bay to the Twins for Matt Garza. Granted it was just rumors, but it came out of Pittsburgh. I'd think that Marshall and Murton with another prospect could probably get it done if they'd be looking at Garza.
  19. The Twins would be looking for a couple good young prospects for Nathan. He's about as good as they come, but I agree our resources should go elsewhere.
  20. Hilarious blog. I agree that we need a backup plan for Pie if he falls apart completely, but at the same time if we upgrade RF and SS, Pie is not going to make or break our season. I don't remember Wittenmeyer writing about the Twins, but I could be wrong. The only good Twins beat writers are Brad Zellar of The Rake (former member of the Gear Daddies) and Lavelle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune. Yeah Lavelle was the guy who supposedly cost Pedro the MVP that one year, but he's a Die Hard Bears Fan who's a blast to drink with on Sundays during the game.
  21. I didn't catch every game since I don't have Chicago Sports Net. Has Lilly ever executed a bunt? We'll have to call him Alfonso Cerrano. "Straightball I hit very much. Curveball, bats are scared." C'mon Lilly. Get in a groove.
