  1. Yeah, I don't love Murton, and agree he should be traded as he doesn't have much of a spot on this team. Something is definitely going on with his swing right now, but there is no way he has fundamentally changed as a hitter. It's a shame he can't play centerfield.
  2. Should we really consider him to be "done" after a handful of at-bats this year, even though he has shown himself to be at least a decent hitter over 800 some odd at-bats over the past few years?
  3. I called Aramis' homer. Of course I always call a homer when one of our power hitters comes to the plate when we are down late in the game.
  4. Why the heck would they do this now? If he was on a short enough leash to fire 20 games into the season, you would think that they would just fire him before any off-season moves were made. Makes no sense.
  5. I want out of that soriano contract more than I want to draw my next breath.
  6. That comparison made me laugh
  7. Ground ball machine. This is the kind of mediocre prospect I wish we would acquire more often in our minor moves.
  8. That's just what happens when you get so many men on base!
  9. I'm glad I fired Kosuke up enough with this post, for him to reveal his secret ability to get on base every single plate appearance.
  10. What are you doing watching that deep fly ball, ya bum!!!
  11. So it looks like Lilly finally had the game that could get him rolling a little bit. How did he look?
  12. I just wanted to clarify that it is absolutely too early to draw any meaningful conclusions from Fukudome's stats, and really I just thought it interesting how opening day has affected fan perception. Also, I intended for this to start a serious discussion about how the lack of power (in general, not really in Fukudome's specific case; I just used that as an anecdotal lead-in) can affect the ability to sustain IsoD. I don't have any specific examples off hand but it seems like there are often prospects who have consistently high OBPs as the climb the minor league ladder, who end up not walking that much as they face more advanced pitching due to a lack of power.
  13. I'm just going to assume that this is a typo.
  14. It's waaaaay to soon to call him a data point "proving" anything. I just thought a discussion was warranted (or at least semi-interesting) based on my curious observation that minus opening day he just hasn't hit for power. Watching him bat, especially considering the Cubs teams of late, is absolutely beautiful. I just have the ever so slight concern that he is being pitched to as if he IS the hitter that hit a home run and a double on opening day, when in reality he is more of a patient singles hitter. Which isn't a bad thing necessarily, but if the pitchers realize it, it could change how he is pitched to and his selectivity won't be as much an asset. Of course if anyone can make the adjustments, he seems like the type of smart hitter who can.
  15. I was just thinking about how Kosuke would be perceived differently by the fans had he not had an amazing opening day performance. And my curiosity creeped in, and I decided to do a quick calculation of his batting line, when opening day was removed. What I got was: 17 hits/60 AB = .283 average 17 hits + 13 BB/73 PA = .411 OBP So far so good, but the slugging percentage is not so good. 22 TB/60 AB = .367 SLG So, .283/.411/.367 for an ops of .778, pretty mediocre. I love the patience and selectivity he has shown, as well as the solid contact, the good defense and the quality arm, however his slugging thus far has me a little worried. Will pitchers realize that he hasn't shown any power and attack him more, rendering his selectivity less useful? Is he just a slower Ichiro that makes less contact? It's obviously too early to be too concerned, and as long as his obp is over .400 he is quite valuable, I am just worried about his ability to sustain a .400+ obp while not hitting for any power. Hopefully he is just lulling the NL to sleep again, so when they start pitching to him, he will tee off. Additionally, he needs to be moved to the top of the order.
  16. no Kim Ng? I have heard nothing but good things about her, and it would be sort of cool for us to break the Gender Barrier.
  17. Can we please stop doing this? It's really confusing. I'm not sure who started it, but I would like to stop it. Such a line goes BA/OBP/SLG. So your line looks like this - .230/.300/.300 Your above line would be an interesting, and favorable, line for Felix but I know you didn't mean Felix would OPS .900 at his floor. Let's also assume that all of us here can add OBP and SLG for ourselves. I'm sorry for the mini-rant, and I don't mean to pick on you, but you are the latest culprit. Back to the hyperbole! Yes! this bothers me as well
  18. If he comes with briefcases full of George's cash, heck yes.
  19. It seems like you try to have depth in the form of players like Matt Murton to be the solution to this sort of problem. Is that wrong?
  20. Hank is an absolute moron.
  21. He has looked terrible at the plate but more time in Iowa will do absolutely nothing for him. As hot as Reed has been, his career numbers vs RHP just aren't good and he won't cut as a full time cf this year. Unless we bring in a player from outside of the organization, we need Pie to start hitting at the major league level. I don't think we just hang him out their to struggle right now, but it is crucial to work him into the lineup a little more, and get him to take over as the starter vs RHP at some point this year. For the mid to long-term success of the franchise Pie is even more crucial unless whoever buys the team is prepared to up the payroll significantly. With all of the salary commitments over the next 5 years, we need as many cheap home grown players we can get to plug in around the Soriano's and Zambrano's. The bottom line is that Reed Johnson is a nice player, but there is no way he should be the full time answer in cf this year.
  22. That is insane to try to compare. Lee was a proven player. I'm sorry, but Felix Pie at the Major League level is nowhere near proven. He, honestly is bad. He had a big hit against the Pirates on a bloop single, but outside of that anytime he comes up with RISP he strikes out. In all honesty I don't think Pie is that great of a prospect. The only reason any of us think he is is because we have such a lack of prospects that are any good that he is our best. Around baseball though, I don't think Pie is that HIGHLY thought of. I feel like people think he can be a good player, but not an all star. If he didn't lose his rookie eligibility, he would have made Baseball America's top 100 for 6 years in a row, so he is fairly highly thought of throughout baseball and has been for quite some time. Does that mean he is guaranteed to do anything? Of course not, however its pretty foolish to feel that he is overrated as a prospect when your only evidence is a handful of major league at bats at such a young age. He could very well be a bust, but its way too soon to give up on him. And good players are valuable, especially when they come from your farm and you have them under control for 6 years at low salaries.
