  1. Agreed. And those of you who are killing JH for not getting enough for Scott Freakin' Williamson need to chill out. If he traded someone with actual value and got hosed I might agree, but Williamson has an ERA over 5.00 and a WHIP over 1.50. He's not very valuable; maybe one of the guys he got will pan out. No one can say at this point, but I think we can say with confidence that Williamson won't be his former self ever again, and his control has left him. Relievers are fickle, prior to today Williamson's WHIP was in the 1.3's. The fact that relievers are fickle is common knowledge, which is why 30 year old middle-men with inconsistent control and coming off not one but two Tommy John surgerys don't fetch much in the trade market. I know we all have a bone to pick with Jim, but this is over the top.
  2. Just curious - to those of you assuming his comments were taken out of context, how come you do not assume the same thing about Baker's comments? Not trying to cause a problem; I really want to know how you are differentiating the two.

  4. I don't think he is "overrated" per sey, he started off miserable this year and has rebounded. He is a very good athlete and a very good pitcher. All the same, giving up that much talent would worry me if I were a Cardinal fan. I don't know why the Cards or the Marlins would do this deal. Maybe the Jockerty thinks the Cards window of opportunity is about to close, I don't know. I know why the Fish would do this deal. (see the prospect list above)
  5. Sir, I have no problem with the idea of Dusty being criticized by Smith. Had Dusty done the interview, I would have expected Smith to ask hard questions. But I have a sincere problem with Dusty agreeing to do the show in good faith, only to have the show's producers EMail Cubs fans, asking them to BOO Dusty in the studio. That is backhanded, it is juvenile, and it is unfair. It seemed to absolutely be a rating's ploy on their part. It seemed like something worthy of Springer, not of ESPN. I dislike Dusty Baker. I want the Cubs to fire him. If I'm at a game, I will boo him. If he was ever gracious enough to agree to an interview with me, I would not arrange to have Cub fans heckle him from a distance. It's unfair. Simple as that. I read your comments in this morning's Trib and agree with all of them. Well done.
  6. http://chicago.comcastsportsnet.com/images/content/cubs/rusch518a.jpg Just a thought: The jokes about Glendon's weight stopped being funny, oh, years ago. Where's Pedro's dead horse?
  7. Prior and Walker for Milledge and Heilman. This would basically be Prior for Milledge and Heilman.
  8. He might be regressing, but might as well let him play this year and find out if he is capable of getting better. If not, perhaps we can trade him while he still has some value. He does look a lot like Royce Clayton to me.
  9. At least he was moving in the right direction re Theriot. The rest was either obvious or not very intelligent.
  10. The NBA salary cap is a maze. I'm not sure why the Pacers get a $7.5M traded player exception, but the exception allows them to add up to $7.5M in salaries in a trade even though they are at/over the cap. It cannot be used to sign a free agent. For the brave: NBA Salary Cap FAQ Wow, that stuff gets pretty confusing. Larry Bird exception, haha Its referred to as the "Bird exception" (or sometimes "Bird rights") b/c the rule was created largely in response to the Celtics' desire to resign him for a substantial raise without blowing the Cap. If memory serves, the rule was established circa 1990 (1908 may recall the exact year or at least have a source). The same rule allowed the Bulls to resign MJ for a one year deal worth 35 million back in 97' (IIRC).
  11. Maybe Todd Walker is trying to talk himself into a quick exit off of the team. Talk about not being able to shut your mouth. Add Walker to the list of players I can't wait for the Cubs to get rid of. I know I hate me some productive players. Seriously though, a player's media interaction should not impact their status on the team. That's pretty unrealistic. Your statement applies to superstars, not Todd Walker.
  12. Those of you defending Walker in this case must have serious man-love for the guy. Besides failing to take responsibility for his actions, he threw a rookie under the bus and became the latest Cub to pick a fight with the announcers. You can rationalize his reasons for doing so any way you want, but to me, its poor behavior and a bad example. And Vance, you can't compare the professionalism and work environment of teachers with that of professional baseball players (you appeared to be doing so above). That's a true apples and oranges situation and an enormous logical leap. EDIT: Just so you guys don't think I am piling on Todd, I thought Jones' reported behavior was as bad if not worse. EDIT AGAIN: On second thought, if those guys were drunk and yelling racial slurs at Jones, I take the above "EDIT" back.
  13. I think you are also paying a steep price for Free, a guy I like, but not that much. Howry by himself ought to be enough in light of how overvalued set up guys are right now. I also favor trading Prior. We have good yoing depth in our staff. How about Prior and a prospect for Abreu instead? Sign Schmidt and here is your staff: Zambrano Schmidt Marshall Hill / Guzman / Marmol (pick 2) Acquring Freel gets you this: Freel Murton Lee ARam Abreu Barrett Jones Cedeno Not bad, and allows you to retain much of your valuable young depth, plus doesn't derail our pen. EDIT: Meh, I forgot that I am trading Howry. Oh well - value begets value (usually).
  14. Hendry is one stubborn SOB. I don't expect him to throw himself on his sword, but it would be nice if he found an artful way to acknowledge the team's weaknesses.
  15. That is w/out doubt one ofthe worst trades I have seen in 10 years. What a rip job. Bowden ate their lunch. What the heck are the Reds thinking?
  16. This is a prediction thread. Not a wishing thread. Oh in that case 81-81 total for the year. Explain how ending the season 81-81 would be good for this team in the long run. When did he say it would be? BTW, I preditc 94 losses. We always magically avoid 100 some how.
  17. I hate to say this, but I see Jason Schmidt going to the Mets. Sabean has a recent history of STUPID trades (AJP for Nathan/Bonser/Liriano, Williams/Aardsma for Hawkins, and Hawkins for Kline), and I could see Sabean trading Schmidt for Bannister (or Heilman) and Fernando Martinez, BASED on his recent history. I am saying based on Sabean's RECENT history, not what the Giants. My guess is...Sabean will NOT get enough for Schmidt, if he trades. You are never going to get enough in return if you trade somebody who will be a Free Agent at the end of the year. If Schmidt had another year left on the contract, then you could get more in return. But nobody is going to overpay to rent somebody for three months. If an extension is reached, that would change everything. Victor Zambrano for Scott Kazmir. Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips + Grady Sizemore for 3 months of Bartolo. How about giving up Bagwell for a couple of months for Larry Anderson? John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander.
  18. You'd want somebody that could on base at a decent clip though right? If Murton can prove he can handle rightys I have no problem with him at the leadoff spot. Of course Baker has to go for that to happen. Boggs led off for the Sox in the 80's all the time. Not saying Murton even approaches Boggs, just saying. I'd love to see Walker leading off, but he's as good as gone (again). Who has the better OBP between Pierre and Walker? Walker by about 40 points, though Pierre's has been on the rise for a few weeks now (finally).
  19. I saw that and was disapointed as well. This team needs to be run by a witch or something since we believe in hexes, curses, and the evil media curse. Always an excuse. ....always. Build a better team and you'll see the excuses go away. Johnnie B. Baker, excuse maker. :puker: Marky Mark, more pitch, less bark. :puker: :puker:

  21. If Hendry reels in Soriano, Abreu and Schmidt in one offseason, my faith will be largely restored.
  22. He just blamed The Goat for his oblique injury. No, I am not kidding.
