  1. who the hell's putting up an .800 OPS? soriano put up a .900+ OPS in the toughest hitter's park in the bigs in the toughest hitter's division in baseball. i can't see his numbers going down much playing all those games in gabp, mmp, miller park, etc. i'm also intrigued by the fact that he doubled his typical walk total last season. i'd give him 5/75 and play him at 2b/cf...whichever he wants. Take it easy - I said "Beltre light", and if you look it up, he never had a .900 OPS before last year. Now, may be he was so much better b/c he was playing LF and thus taking less of a beating, concentrating more on hitting, etc., but it bothers me that he did this in his walk year. Moreover, does someone alll of a sudden acquire plate discipline at age 30? Perhaps yes, but is it likely? I dunno, that's why I don't want to give him so much money and so many years. We don't have that kind of margin of error.
  2. So Piniella was the shoo-in for a whole 24 hours. I can get behind Bochy as long as he doesn't cost much in the way of talent. Everyone on the list so far will cost money, and, since it's not my money, I'm not going to waste much time worrying about who's cheapest. There's nothing exciting about Bochy. That could be a good thing. Padres fans don't care much one way or another whether he sticks around. Bochy batting Bellhorn in the playoffs really seems to have ticked them off. I wonder who Piniella's "close friends" who are trying to dissuade him are? I'd bet Brennaman is one, though I hope for his sake (as I would for anyone's) that Piniella doesn't really consider him a "close friend." It sort of seems Girardi is toast as far as the Cubs job. Bochy couldn't get as much as Dusty, could he? That would be quite a raise. I want him to be here very badly - if it costs a a draft pick, that's fine with me. Piniella's friends who say we aren't close to winning may have a point, BTW. I guess I'd be surprised if Joe lands in Wash, but it also tells you who is in charge in Chicago, if the reports re upper management's affinity for him are to be believed.
  3. Soriano is looking like a "Beltre-light", if you catch my drift. I can't justify the sort of cash he (apparently) wants for an OPS in the 800's.
  4. The light is going on. Maybe not at the speed of light, but they're not ignoring the poor walks and OBP totals from this year. It'll be on the table at the org meetings. G-d's miracles never cease, eh?
  5. I was actually a bit moved by that. Nicely done.
  6. Rosenthal is confirming that Bochy has permission to talk.
  7. Hope you guys listen to this; the link is above. Its attack dog journalism - he's a crappy pitcher on a baseball tgeam, not the President. That said, Lidle is backing up the truck.
  8. I am listening to it now - http://www.wfan.com/. Mike and Chris have always been hot heads, and have set the tone for the nasty NYC media for years. They are entertaining, but take sports a bit too seriously. EDIT: The logic they are using in assailing Lidle is faulty. Lidle could have been saying that the team stinks and we should have been better prepared, but that's our fault, not Torre's. I think they wanted this story to blow up, as usual.
  9. I don't know if any of this is serious, but Mike and Mad Dog need to own up if it is. Seriously, there is a certain level of criticism that athletes need to learn to take, especially in a big market. But there is also a line that should not be crossed. Some might think it's "entertainment" to drag a guy through the mud on the public airwaves. I do not. Most of the NY media need a wake up call. It's unfortunate that it had to happen like this... Anyone...Buhler... What did they say about Lidle on Monday?
  10. what did they say to him?
  11. I guess if its a choice between Joe and Lou, I'll take Joe, but I'd rather have Bochy.
  12. What if you scored on an error? Outpitch and outhit are pretty useless phrases. Agreed. Unless they arfe understood to exclude "luck" factors, like errors or misplays not scored as errors, etc.
  13. If he was righty, he'd be the perfect platoon partner with Jones. Too bad he's not. i wonder if the crew would do: jones dempster for jenkins clark that would be a trade that would make sense. the brewers might want some cash, though. I dunno - is he that much an upgrade in RF over Jones? I know you love Clark. I guess I like him, but not that much.
  14. According to ESPN, he's been told by Doug Melvin that he is likely to be moved. Might make a nice platoon partner for Murt in LF, no? Who might the Brew Crew want in return? If we could acquire some pop for the MIF and in CF, might this work? Just a thought.
  15. I would gladly live with Dunn's low BA and high K total if he his slugging % weren't trending down as it is, especially considering he plays half his games at the GABP. Further, the argument that Dunn's OPS is still better than the majority of the 06' Cubs is like saying "10 day old sushi still tastes better than dog poo." OK, may be that's a bit extreme, but you get my drift. Comparing Dunn to the Cubs horrendous lineup isn't much of a comparison.
  16. I think like most other things, the manager gets too much credit and too much blame. Its most often a combo of several factors. Grain of salt.
  17. \ Screw that. If we are involved in a Miguel Cabrera trade, then I want us to be the ones that end up with Miggy. The Troll speaks. How does a guy with that name get past Tim and 1908?
  18. There was very little Torre could do about this, IMO. Cashman and the Steinbrenner contingent in Tampa have been fighting about personnel for years now, and it shows in the makeup of that pitching staff, and to a lesser extent, the position players. The lineup is very old and injury prone (recall for example that they could have had Vlad rather than Sheff, but reports indicated that Big Stein wanted Sheff), and ARod has been the first new guy that I can recall who has not meshed into what is reputed to be baseball's most professional clubhouse. I also think its clear that the Captain has allowed his teammates to hang ARod out to dry. Its an ugly scene there; if the report is true and Piniella is coming back for a second tour of duty (20 yrs after his first), they are doing Torre a favor. I am betting Joe tips his cap and retires. Managing 11 seasons in NY is like managing 25 anywhere else. He had an amazing run; go home and enjoy the jewlery and millions on your way to the HOF, Joe. I guess I'll settle for Lil' Joe (Girardi) or Brenly, though I think my opinion has been swayed and I prefer the later, but not by much. EDIT: But if the Bochy reports are true, I'd prefer him to either of the above.
  19. Good point by RH Is A Beast. I was going to post the following but didn't want to have a chair thrown at me: I think the A's will win the WS this year b/c, for the first time since they started their current run of playoff apperances, they have the best overall pitching staff of any of the playoff teams, IMO. (though I admit to being impressed by what the Tigers did) Their lineup is pretty weak actually. Reminds me of (gulp) the 05' Sox.
  20. I agree with BBB on this - Bochy is a superior choice to any of the other candidates. He has shown his affinity for OBP, and has in fact played young guys to the exclusion of vets. I don't know why people would think otherwise considering Greene, Barfield, Gonzalez, and several picthers have all grown up on his watch.
  21. We should do them a favor and take that ARod guy off their hands. I mean, they need help in that rotation, no? Prior for ARod. :D
  22. Just to add to Vance and Bruno's discussion, the Marlins' "leaks" and comments about Girardi stink of a spin job. Loria's reputation around baseball is apparently not good (I believe Bruce stated as much) and he isn't taken seriously. While this does not mean Hendry shouldn't investigate what went on, I think you have take anything coming from the Marlins about Girardi with a grain of salt.
  23. Agreed - if these two are his focus, why wait? Hendry never struck me as a guy who has a hard time making decisions (some of his trades are evidence of that, IMO), but as the pressure has begun to build it appears that the opposite is true. EDIT: Though Bruce made a good point in another thread:
