  1. Low base plus incentives + fine w/ me. If he makes it as the 5th starter, it probably will mean that JH did something right in getting guys for the front end of the rotation. Lets see how this plays out.
  2. Me too. Sun tImes says he emphasizes patience and OBP. Big step in right direction, IMO.
  3. Agreed, but the overall scheme is only slightly better, IMO, than the old ugly unis
  4. Ok to Sheff if the deal is cheap. Its enough that we would be picking up his entire salary (probably) - we shouldn't have to give up anyone with truly high value in addition. Eyre and Jones for Sheff, resign ARam, and sign Soriano and Roberts: Roberts Murton Lee Sheff ARam Soriano Barrett Izturis I could live with this, assuming the rotation also gets a make over.
  5. My prob w/ Sheff is less about his age and more about his 'tude. Will he shut it down and loaf if things don't go his way? I dunno, just asking.
  6. The best defender does not make the best team. You defended a move by saying you have to trust the players. Making a change already indicates you don't trust your players, and simply trusting them is not justification enough for making the move. You have to make the best move for the team, and often times in baseball, that is no move at all. A defensive upgrade is not necessarily the best move just becasue it's a defensive upgrade. There are other factors to consider, and you can't dismiss them simply by saying you trust your players to make those other factors moot. For most of the game I agree with you. But if I have a lead in the ninth, I'd certainly be more inclined to put the better defender to help keep that lead. i think that the benefits of doing that are negligible at best. the chances that the player at said position will make an error to cost the team the game are far less than the chances that the opposing team will tie the score through hitting a home run or driving the ball into a gap, thus making it likely that the player in question will have to come to bat. OK, but why take the risk?
  7. Wouldn't the difference between them be that Wood would need to adjust to a pen role, whereas Gagne is already comfortable? I'd take a flier on Gagne with a one year deal, especially if we deal Dempster.
  8. I remember the Cubs passing on Jim Thome because Hee Seop Choi was waiting in the wings. Perhaps they remember that as well. I also remember a lot of fans up in arms when we traded Lee and gave up Hee Seop, claiming we just took on salary for what will one day be equal production at the same position. Uhh .... not quite. Hindsight=20/20 That's a convenient answer: When I'm right its b/c I know what I am talking about, and when I am wrong I am really right b/c hindisght is 20/20. The Lee trade was as good then as it is now. Its one of the small handful of deals Hendry has made that had a measurable positive outcome. If only there were more like it....
  9. I want to see Pie playing for the Cubs. But I'm not saving a spot for him if good alternatives are available. I've seen that movie too many times before. QFT
  10. They would have to seriously upgrade via trade, because that would be ugly. Yes. Beyond having Aramis, that group certainly doesn't represent the big arm and the additional big bat this club desperately needs. Agreed - he'd be fine off the bench, though.
  11. The following is totally warranted:  This whole thing wreaks of smear job. It's like they unleashed a horde of critical articles to gauge public opinion. By "they" I assume you mean Hendry and the Cubs. I agree that the criticism is over the top, but how exactly does JH control the media such that they smear players on his orders? That's a pretty ridiculous notion.
  12. Not needed in baseball. I'm not sure about that. I thought the Cubs interviewed Listach solely to comply with that standard.
  13. But he is a solid gamble for a team looking for starting pitching depth. Given his usage out of both the bullpen and his desire (and upside) to start, Heilman is a far better swing-man than Rusch, and a better option to start than pulling up random guys from the minors. If it doesn't cost much in talent, then pursue him. That's fine... I just don't want people to get carried away by thinking that every pitcher coming off surgery will suddenly turn into Chris Carpenter. Heilman isn't Carpenter, Rothschild isn't Duncan, and the Cubs aren't the Cardinals. In fact, it's more likely that Heilman's arm will completely fall off than it is that he'll turn into Carpenter. Sorry for what was apprently a comparison that offended your intellect. I made a qualified point - that this "could" be a Carpenter type situation, not that it "certainly will be". It has potential to be a low risk-high reward situation.
  14. Schnikes. So Gillick doesn't want Burrell and his bloated contract, but wants to give a 30 yr old with a history of avg plate discipline an even more bloated deal. BTW, the title of this thread reminds me of Anchorman: "I look good...I mean really good..."
  15. Actually he's very talented, he just hasn't picthed well. I think there is a difference. how hasn't he pitched well? two straight 80+ inning seasons with whips of 1.14 and 1.16. bunch of k's too. i don't think he's a bad pitcher, i just don't want to give up a ton for him. i'd be all for getting him if he didn't cost too much. he could serve as a bullpen arm or a much, much better insurance starter than the cubs have had over the past few years. Let me clarify - he hasn't pitched to expectations. Wasn't he their No. 1 pick and a big time star at ND? Anecdotaly, I sat next to a guy on a plane once who told me that he was a college ballplayer who had faced Heilman at ND. He said he was the best pitcher he had ever seen and that he is sure to be a star in the Bigs. Just hasn't happened yet. If we can get him "on the cheap", I think its a no-brainer. This could be a Chris Carpenter type thing.
  16. I said this in the first HR thread, but if he was canned b/c of progressive discipline - i.e., that he this wasn't the first time this sort of thing happened - he's likely doesn't have much on the ball here. But the real issue is what his employment contract says - what is "cause" for termination under the agreement?
  17. Actually he's very talented, he just hasn't picthed well. I think there is a difference.
  18. If the deal is Sheff for Eyre or Dempster, count me in.
  19. In a strange way I think his leaving might be better for the team in the long run (i.e., Hendry would be forced to agreessively pursue several replacement parts, like Minaya in NY), but I think its more prudent to make sure he is back in the fold.
  20. Now that is a blockbuster! Makes my head hurt. Though it makes me long for the days of true blockbuster trades, like the one where Tor. sent McGriff and Fernandez to SD for Alomar and Carter. You don't see deals like that one anymore.
  21. QFT - Aramis would have been flat out dumb to not opt out. Its a win-win for him; a no-brainer. If I were Aramis I wouldn't take anything Hendry offered me before I filed. He probably just made $10-$15 mill more by filing, and if Hendry doesn't pony it up you know that someone else will.
  22. Based on Hendry's last offseason I'll be suprised if we get even 1 of those 3. Funny things happen when you are going to be canned and thus have nothing to lose. I think JH is in that spot right now.
