  1. I don't agree. There is a noticebale lack of position player depth, but we have pretty good pitching prospects.
  2. Would you have prefered that he not be re-signed? remember how we were all thrilled when kerry wood signed his 3 year extension? long term commitments to pitchers are risky. i hope z remains good for the duration of the contract, but i'm skeptical. if the cubs let z walk, i'd have understood. I agree that long term commitnments to picthers are risky. I also think the reality of this situation is that it had to be done. A negotiation is what it is - you get value but you also concede some to the other side. In this case we get the value of our ace during the best years of his career, and in return he gets a couple of years of high-end pay during which he probably won't be worth it. IMO, that's fair.
  3. Didn't we go up a game on the Crew earlier this season?
  4. I say layoff Jim for a few days. Today he did something great. And though I blame Hendry for many things, I still think that MacPhail was the true anchor dragging this team down.
  5. So much for that. Instead, we will end up with Craig Monroe. Where are you getting that from? I assume you are talking out of your arse.
  6. Sarcasm, right? not really. Unreal.
  7. Would you have prefered that he not be re-signed?
  8. That's flippin awesome. Where do you find this stuff?
  9. Nice job by the fellas today. Must win game and they cam through. They'll need to be sharp against the Birds.
  10. Holy cow. I have been warned for far less than this.
  11. If I were a Cubs fan, I'd have been crapping my pants for the last couple weeks. Knew that was coming.... Its an apples to organges comparison. The Brewers have been listless. The Cubs have been in most if not all of the games they have lost in the last two weeks. EDIT: I fear the Birds though. Hopefully we take at least two of three this weekend.
  12. Good news is that they have scored a bunch of runs over the last three days even with his struggles.
  13. 8-0 Cards in 9th. The Brewers are toast.
  14. All class. Oh get off your high horse. I made no comment about his dad other than hoping he'd get better. I'm not going to question the intent of your post (only you know that), but it came out very bad. It was very obvious that he wasn't going to get better; in fact, he was undoubtedly already dead when you made your post (Laura's post mentioning the announcement of his death came less than 10 minutes after your post, and it certainly takes more than 10 minutes before a death is announced publicly). Your post came off as a potshot at Cliff during a time of personal tragedy. It's certainly valid to complain about his loss of power, but this thread isn't the proper place for that. It's a potshot at Cliff's power, not Cliff. I honestly didn't know his Dad was in that much trouble, and I didn't think the comment was that offensive. But now that I realize some people found the post offensive, I will say that I am sorry I posted it. I don't hang around trying to find ways to offend people, despite how that post may have looked. Well said. Fo rmy part, I get it, it just happens that my opinion differs from yours on this issue. To each his own.
  15. Honestly, please don't engage me in convo if all you (or anyone else) intend to do is parse semantics. I am really sick of it.
  16. You know where I stand on this one. I think in gen. its in poor taste to make fun of people who meet an untimely demise, no matter the circumstances. If you or anyone else thinks I need to "lighten up", so be it.
  17. Really? I haven't noticed that trend at all. And he wasn't mocking Floyd's father. Perhaps I should be more specific - moking the dead and those who mourn the loss. The trend seemed to peek a couple of months ago, IIRC.
  18. The funny part about that is that the article implies intetional discrim. on the part of the umpires. Accordingly, the theory goes that the home plate ump decides to discrim against blacks on 2-3 times out of 250 opportunities. Sure - that makes sense.
  19. Its a deeper issue than just this thread. There's been sort of trend in the direction of mocking the dead around here lately.
  20. this team is exactly what their record shows, a barely .500 team. and that might be enough to get into the playoffs. Probably correct. Time will tell.
  21. Ditto. I grew up splitting time between Chicago/Evanston and Westchester Cnty. Thus I grew up with Harry and The Scooter, and I adored both of them. I watched Yankees games on WPIX largely b/c of Scooter and Bill White, a perfectly mismatched pairing. Steinbrenner treated him like dirt at the end of his run in 96'. He deserved better.
  22. This team is not terrible. This team also is not very good. As with most things in life, they are somewhere between these extremes.
  23. Team in contention yet pessimism reigns. And irrational pessimism at that.
