  1. Hey! I thought BP ended before the game started?!
  2. If the Cubs finally get a real RFer who can hit or a SS (ARod) then you don't have to worry about Pie's hitting. You can afford to bat him 8th and allow him to work through his ups and downs.
  3. that's a very good point. A very, very good point.
  4. This was the first loss in some time that i can recall where I scratched my head a bit at some of the moves. Overall, I think Lou has doen a nice job, certainly a ton better than the former occupent of his position.
  5. Are you taking a contrarian position? Say it isn't so!
  6. just like the cardinals! everybody's lucky except for the cubs. I was attempting to be ironic, but this was obviously lost in translation.
  7. Beane and Geren must be in possesion of magic pixie dust.
  8. Rex did fine today, but was hamstrung by poor play calling and worse protection. Plus give SD's defense credit - they are pretty good.
  9. It sure would be nice if someone reminded Miller that we are playing for real now and he needs to take his head out of his a**. When Rex has time he throws nice passes.
  10. I love this sort of post: "I didn't see the game and have no idea what the situation was, but I need to be crticial of what I did not see."
  11. Yes please. Theriot (2b) Soriano (LF) Lee ARod ARam DeRow (RF) Soto Pie Yum, yum, dim-sum.
  12. I wonder if that guy has ever done anything wrong in his life. To get that upset over baseball is a bit over the top.
  13. anyone who knows anything considers him the greatest DH of all time That entirely depends on whether you think of Frank Thomas as a 1B or a DH forced to play 1B for a while. IIRC, Martinez was an unmitigated disaster at 3B when he came up. Frank wasn't a GGer, but I don't recall him being a butcher either.
  14. Why do this now? The only thing I can think of is that they are sending a message to Jocketty or whoever that they are interested. That is unless he got caught having sex with the owner's wife or something. Congrats, jake!! I enjoy your posts and hope you will be here when the Rats win the 2010 WS!!!
  15. I wonder if this is the sort of loss that derails a team permanently. We'll find out if these guys can move on or if they are going wollow in it and allow them to effect their confidence.
  16. And moreso the fact that bad luck led to that situation in the first place. No one is perfect. This loss is one in 162 but is magnified b/c its Sept 6.
  17. The Brewers have some major issues in the pitching rotation bthat the Cubs do not have. Unfortunately for them, this yr's FA mkt is weak in terms of pitching, and they blew a bunch of cash on Suppan who has been a bust. They will need to trade a few of their prospects to get some help for that rotation. By my count they need at least two more reliable starters. They can fix their bullpen internally, IMO. Their lineup is potent and simply better than the Cubs'.
  18. I love Messmer. It was such a shame when he got shot and had to quit.
  19. Looked to me like Eithier dogged that one after he fell down.
  20. More good ones: Daniels could have been every bit as good as Puckett: http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/danieka01.shtml Davis could have had a Tino martinez-like career if injuries had not derailed him also: http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/davisgl01.shtml
  21. Agreed. Perry at least has them taking more pitches than in the past. When your approach is as fundamentally flawed as the Cubs was over the last several yrs, you need to time to break out. Imagine being told every day for four yrs, "Be aggressive - swing!", and now all of a sudden being told, "Take it easy; wait for a pitch you can drive; don't be afraid to take a strike." Some of what you are seeing is a transitiional phase, IMO.
  22. Oooh, good ones. Oliver's career: .303 .344 .451 121 (ops-plus) Guerrero: .300 .370 .480 137 (!!) Hrbek: .282 .367 .481 127 You could argue that Guerrero is the most underrated hitter since WWII. Look at these OPS-plus numbers for the prime yrs of his career: http://www.baseball-reference.com/g/guerrpe01.shtml
