    Oh God, here we go... Yes, "here we go" - anytime OMC has the gall to mention (or implie - something he barely did in this case) he played competitive sports someone engages in a personal attack against him.

    Please just freaking win. If they can win two at home the pressue will fall heavily on the DBacks. It could be like 2003 vs. the Marlins, only we'll be on the other side. I am so disgusted by last night's effort!

    I don't know if I'd call this a nightmare, but it was at least as poor a move as the Kendall deal was a good move.

    That team just has our number for some reason. The Reds play well against us, but not that well. Hopefully they'll forget about it and move on. They ought to send the Cards and Pads a love letter in the meantime. I'd also point out that they hit the ball hard all series long but the Marlins either made some fine plays in the OF or were positioned very well. That bodes well as we switch from that cavernous, ugly park to the Big Red Hitting Park in Cinci. Go Cubs! Let's clinch tonight!

    He missed that by an inch. I think you could make a pretty strong argument that DeRosa has been this team's MVP. Of course ARam's camp has a great argument as well.

    Look, nobody said we're totally gonna win this game, Cubs are awesomest, gonna win the next 8 world serieses. They were just pointing out that you and others were being spazzes saying the season was over because of this game, and that there's no way we could possibly come back from an insurmountable 4 run deficit with only 7 innings to go!! Considering your track record on calling games over, smart money probably is still on the Cubs winning the game. But that's cool, you can crow about us drinking cubbie kool aid and how you knew this game was over and the team doesn't care/is complacent/went out partying/is too young/inexperienced/whatever cliche you want to use to say they won't win because of the uniform they're wearing. And hopefully there'll be a few game threads the rest of the year where people like me aren't here to call you out on your crap. Thanks for posting this so I didn't have to. Who the heck cares, I am being wildly irrational right now, but I know that 20 minutes after the game is over, I will start to think normally again. Game threads are a forum for irrational thought. If you don't like irrational thoughts and want to discuss the game, that's fine just gloss over the bad posts. I missed that part in the forum guidelines.

    i wonder what Beane would be like on a high payroll team. He can obvously find talent, with a payroll in the 100's i'd imagine he's be awesome. I think the opposite may be true. Beane's true value, IMO, is that he is able to put together productive and winning teams with a limited budget.

    I see several problems with these arguments: 1) There is no universal definition of "clutch" Is it with runners on and 2 out? Runners on in any situation? After the 7th? Anytime the team is behind? Tough to figure and really hampers any analysis, IMO. 2) Sample size There is little agreement on what constitutes a statstically significant sample size in baseball. Arguments seem to go all over place on this issue. 3) Subjectivity Some degree of subjectivity leaks into each and every argument I have read. The subjectivity element of the pro-clutch argument is wel-documented, so I will not repeat it here. On the flipside, I found this an interesting: I admit that I did not read the whole article. That said, Mr. Bradbury is making a huge assumption here: that hitters put forth the same level of effort and concentration during each and every AB. How does he know this? What proof does he have? It may seem "silly" to him that players would put forth less than their best at any time, but - based on the fact that we all have that issue in our own professions (i.e., on some days we all take it easy or "slack") - I think its far more likely than not that he is incorrect in his assumption.

    I hope that Hart's success allows us to deal off Dempster. Hopefully Hendry has learned his lesson where relievers are concerned. Someone will take Ryan in exchange for a couple of propsects.
