  1. Marvell played for quite a while actually, for the Pirates in particular, IIRC. Here he is: http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/wynnema01.shtml Luis was one of my faves only b/c he was a late addition (a la Lopes in 84') and looked about 20 yrs older than he was at the time. EDIT: Baseball reference says he put up an OPS-plus of 117 for the Cubs that yr in about 30 games. http://fireloupiniella.files.wordpress.com/2007/02/luis-salazar.JPG
  2. =D> Quite a change from "I'm gonna go gangbusters to make a waiver deal!!" from a couple days ago, isn't it. Ahh the shifting winds of the mind of Jim Hendry. Next time Jim, just tell the truth: the team is being sold, nobody's going to let us spend a ton of cash. It's very simple, it's the truth, and it avoids making everyone look like fools down the road. When did he say that he was desperately trying to make a deal? He said he's put in lots of claims, but I've never heard him say that he wanted to make a deal for anything but the right price. Oh he will make deal, mark my words. It may not be a good one, it may not be a logical one, but he will make a deal.
  3. Not really surprising. No matter what anyone says, we're not a real good team. Take 2 top run producers out of any lineup and most teams won't be real good. they weren't real good with those guys. yeah, 18 games over .500 in a 35 game span (or something similar to that) isn't good. just overlooking the other 80 games are we? give me a break. Just ignoring the fact that the vast majority of good teams lose as many as 70 games in a season? what? let me know when the cubs go 92-70. You appeared to argue that a team's performance over 80 games is a good indicator of how good they are. You ignored the fact that they play 82 other games. If a team goes 35-45 in the first 80 games they can still win 88-90 games and contend for the playoffs by going 53-29. Thus your argument ignores as much as Cubbies75 did.

  6. That was a horse poop call. Did anyone else notice Murt trying to talk to De-Row? Mark didn't seem interested.
  7. Floyd's Dad is gravely ill, according to Len. Hang in there Uncle Cliffy.
  8. Pat's OBP of .417 and OPS-plus of 133 more then make up for his defensive issues. Plus he's turning 31, which should mean that he has 3 or 4 more "prime" years left. Do it!
  9. Hes not a 5th starter, hes a number 3. No he is not. He is 4th at best in this rotation.
  10. Again, Hendry has claimed and been awarded several players. The media is just playing this one up b/c of the Sox angle and the fact that Ozzie gave Pods the business earlier this year.
  11. Trade him. He stinks anyway.
  12. Why don't we just initiate a caste system while we are it.
  13. Yes. One of my fave books is the Bill James Abstract in which he takes the best 200 or so at each position and even breaks it down by the era the player was active in. I'd love to engage in a similar analysis.
  14. If Kendall puts up a .360 OBP he should absolutely be batting leadoff in this lineup. What good is that OBP in the 8 hole or in the 7 hole surrounded by Cedeno, Jones or Fontenot? Let him get on-base in front of our best hitters. Theriot has a overall .353 OBP. Again, I am not saying Theriot isn't also a good option. I am advocating putting them both at the top of the order, Kendall no. 1 and Theriot no. 2. This maximizes their value, IMO.

  16. Nothing against kendall leading off, but why not Theriot? Nothing against Theriot in the leadoff spot. Just trying to maximize Kendall's value on this team with this lineup.
  17. I really don't think Hendry is targeting Pods in particular. He apparently has put in claims on 8 different guys. IIRC, ist not unusual for GMs to do this when their team is in contention. The 89' (or 88?) A's did it and wound up with both Willie McGee and Harold Baines. The Yanks did it several years ago and had Jose Canseco riding the pine.
  18. He looked good running the bases on the ball Atkins botched. As soon as the ball slipped by he put on "the jets" and was home very quickly. And he doesn't have to have great speed - that's a myth, IMO. We just need someone who will get on-base won't run us out of potential big innings.
  19. Kendall should be batting first under the current conditions. In fact, I wouldn't be opposed to leaving him there when Soriano gets back and putting Soriano in the 5-hole. Kendall Theriot Lee ARam Soriano DeRosa Floyd/Murt Jones/Pie If Kendall is taking pitches and putting up Hatteberg-type nos. he becomes very valuable on this team, IMO.
  20. Never? Sometimes, just not much recently.
  21. The problem with Podsednik is that he is only valuabel when he gets on-base....but he doesn't get on-base...
  22. Ward's a power hitter? Jones? I guess that depends on how you define it.
