  1. Why not? He's a CF'er with a career line of .297 / .381 / .477 and 125 (OPS+). Plus he played very good defense at a difficult position and put up a career postseason line of .275 / .371 / .480 in 465 AB's . Had he not played in the Steroids Era and thus been buried behind the Bonds, McGwires, Boones, et al., you'd be whistling a different tune.
  2. Did he stop you from going to the polls? :-k Sorry, couldn't resist. Yeah, that one was weird. Especially from a guy who consistently mocks others.
  3. You can forget about the DH being eliminated. It creates probably 15 or so extra jobs per yr. Don Fehr would have to enter a witness protection program if he bargained it away. Its far more likely that the NL will have DH's some day.
  4. Recently retired players who have to be in the HOF: Roberto Alomar http://www.baseball-reference.com/a/alomaro01.shtml Craig Biggio http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/biggicr01.shtml Larry Walker http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/walkela01.shtml Mike Piazza http://www.baseball-reference.com/p/piazzmi01.shtml Bernie Williams http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/willibe02.shtml Jeff Bagwell http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/bagweje01.shtml
  5. Morris's overall career was overrated. His postseason career was not. One hit wonder: How about Kevin Maas? Also, I think people mistake Roger Maris for an all-time great when he really wasn't. EDIT: This is already my fave thread in the history of NSBB.
  6. There's a world of difference between not being very good vs. having a bad year. Many good players have had bad years and rebounded just fine. Will that be the case with Hill? Nobody knows. But it's unquestionably premature to completely write him off. While I certainly agree that we should not write him off, he is having more than just your avg bad year. This is truly a shame. In fact, it sucks.
  7. If the deal were "take Harang and we will include Dunn", then sign me up.
  8. I have had a million muscle strains in a million places. The only cure is rest. DL for 15 and reevaluate. We'll survive fine if he misses two or three starts.
  9. HA, I counted two today. This post should quoted until the freakin' bd crashes.
  10. I never understood why Cito didn't get more chances when you consider how many crappy managers get recycled. BTW, I can read JP's mind:
  11. I am really sick of Guillen and his crew of low-brow players. They generally reflect their fanbase.
  12. You go, Fonzy! Get back soon - we need ya!
  13. The 800 lb Gorilla in the room is that this dumb-*** commentary came from an alleged saber-guy and Beane-disciple. But then again, this is the guy who filled out his lineup wih David Eckstein and Scott "my best years are FAR behind me" Rolen. He's been on the job for 7 years. There's really no excuse for how poor that team's offense still is.
  14. I have a good feeling about this - it won't be anything more than a medium deal.
  15. This is why i stay out of game threads. Adios, fellas.
  16. That would only be awesome if he returned to his younger years. The Cubs don't really need a sub .300 OBP, 85 OPS+ backup 1B on the roster. I dunno, I like the idea of a RH PH'er who with major pop coming off the bench in the 7th to face tough LH relievers. It would be a nice luxury, that is unless his bat has slowed to the point that he cannot hit a ML fastball anymore.
  17. We should grab him for our bench. That would be awesome.
  18. Coco Crisp stinks. This rumor has to be bogus. I'd love me some Adam Dunn, but I doubt that Cinci will play ball with us. I read in (IIRC) Gammon's blog that the Red Sox are interested in Dunn but are concerned with his lack of contact and low BA. Doesn't sound very Epstein-like to me, but who knows?
  19. The Johnson steal attempt and bunt were two of the worst plays this season and harken back to the Dusty days, in my mind. I sincerely doubt they had anything to do with Lou b/c: 1) he has little or no history of ordering bunts in that type of situation; and 2) he obeys many of baseballs grand ol' maxims, including that you never, ever make the first or third out at third base.
  20. "Clutch" isn't a good reason to sign or not sign anyone. If it were, Francisco Cabrera and Scott Brosius (amongst many others) would have made a lot more money than they did. Moreover, how many "clutch" situations do you get on a team that is consistently miserable? I agree he is slightly overpaid in terms of market value, but the difference between what he earns and what he is worth probably isn't as big as it appears.
  21. Right. That said, he's more valuable now than he was before Soriano's hand broke.
