  1. How does that come up in conversation? Them: "Are you happy that the Cubs won the world series?" you: "Actually I'm a Cards fan" Them: "Oh, then we are actually the parents of Steve Bartman, who provided the greatest moment in Cardinal's history" you: "You're thinking of Sox fans"
  2. Does anybody remember a thread where we were discussing terrible beers which inevitably led to a war over the merits of PBR vs. Old Style? That may have been at Cubs.com. but I remember it being pretty funny
  3. As far as I'm concerned, this is the standard by which all posts are measured. Also was that post in the fast food thread the origin of Thick onion gravy?
  4. Bears lose 30 -0 on 10 Robbie Gould field goals
  5. Scherzer won 20 games. That still matters to the type of people that vote for these things. Maybe it wasn't the first criteria but in a close race I'm sure it was the tie breaker.
  6. If not now, when are they ever going to fire Klinsman? Even shows like Around the Horn that almost never talk about soccer are going to be talking about firing Klinsman today.
  7. I think the way to trade Arrieta would be to package him with Soler and others as part of a blockbuster deal with a team that sits in limbo between maybe being able to compete if things break the right way or maybe needing a short term rebuild. That team- I don't have anybody particular in mind- would then have the option of trading him at the deadline to get max value or keep him for a playoff run and then get the comp pick (if that's still a thing next year). This is the kind of move that would generate a lot of excitement within a fan base as it looks like a win now move without a really huge risk long term.
  8. I'd love to make that trip. What's it like being an away fan at Fenway? you'll probably get called a queeah a few times I've only been to Boston once. I left thinking of it as a thinking man's Philadelphia. So perhaps they can do better than that, like maybe wicked stoopid.
  9. I'm going to have to make Camden Yards work.
  10. I would have also accepted "Cubs sign Dexter Fowler to 4 year contract, Cardinals weep".
  11. I'd love to make that trip. What's it like being an away fan at Fenway?
  12. Petition to change the title of this thread.
  13. If the Bears are going to win just to horsefeathers with somebody's season, I'd rather they do that to the packers. Or have they already lost to them twice? I haven't been paying close enough attention to know for sure.
  14. I need some hockey minds that have been following more closely to confirm. Obviously they are playing like a beast right now and that's super encouraging but I do remember reading that they were winning despite poor CORSI/possession numbers which screams a bit of regression is due. I'm still wary of their overall depth with so many rookies and that this will eventually hurt them as the season goes on (not to the point of missing the playoffs or anything, just to the point where they aren't taking points in every single game). Part of the problem is Toews getting off to his typical Sanbergian slow start. This has a ripple effect with regards to how his line is deployed. Toews is still mostly going against the other team's best center, even more so since he has Kane on his wing instead of Hossa. The Hawks need to figure out who can be a good 2 way player to put on the first line to take a little of the defensive pressure off of Toews. Kane is a better defender than he was but he's no Hossa as far as 2 way play goes. I think that when Motte comes back he'll be able to step into that role if Schmaltz hasn't already claimed it. Also, the circus trip is typically where the Hawks team comes together and shows who they're going to be. Toews will be matched up against Schieffle, McJesus and Kopitar. How those games play out will give us a good idea of where the Hawks are and whether they'll need to attempt to bring in another forward for the first line.
  15. Didn't notice this before today. I could watch this for hours and hours.
  16. I'd like to think that the one league that doesn't have a salary cap and doesn't seem to want one could work out whatever differences they have with the players.
  17. It seems like the symptoms overlap which made the diagnosis more difficult. I guess at least knowing what he's up against is better than not knowing and people doubting his commitment or work ethic.
  18. If people hate Dempster so much, why did they name a street after him? I make that joke every time I drive past or down Dempster Ave.
  19. I meant Schwarber
  20. Thank you for this link. Sooooooo many things wrong with this take. But I loved reading it. First time I've laughed since Tuesday night. Imagine if the Cubs, who drafted Bryant and Rizzo (not to mention Baez) had "drafted well". What would that look like? Steve Nebraska at 4 different positions?
  21. That's my strategy as well. My sister bought me a t shirt from Costco so I've that going for me.
  22. A friend of mine sent me the SI issue from the start of the series that was supposed to jinx the Cubs. It's tan and has "Cubs -1908- 2016 World Champions" and pictures of the usual suspects.
  23. Was he hiding an injury for most of the season? He said he lost the feel for his slider. We've seen this movie before with a reliever that went from lights out to marginally effective. If he can't use his slider, is it worth maybe trying to turn him into the next great closer? I doubt that's the plan for this year but it wouldn't be the first time a very good starting pitcher reinvented himself as a dominant closer.
  24. Given the way guys like Miller, Chapman and Jansen were used (and the fact that we gave up our top prospect to Chapman), I think smart front offices already see the value in having a truly elite relief guy. And that especially holds true in the playoffs where they can pitch basically every game. I'd prefer Jansen over Chapman, but I'd definitely like to have one of them in the fold over the next several years. How much, if at all, does it affect the decision to bring Chapman back that he doesn't like pitching more than one inning and doesn't like pitching in non save situations? It seems like Miller embraced that role and excelled where Chapman did it but didn't like it. I know his usage would be different during the regular season but if part of the justification of bringing him back is being used in a variety of situations has to be addressed.
  25. Is that Skip Bayless yelling at some former NFL guy whose name I can't remember? Shannon Sharpe?
