I think they should re-sign Nomar for a cheap, incentive based contract. If he gets hurt, we've got Ronny to step in. IF the Cubs are going to go for a closer, I would LOVE for it to be BJ Ryan. When guys like Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson say he has the best stuff they've ever seen, I want him in a Cubs uniform. But that's only if the Cubs go after a closer. I'm happy with Dempster for now.

That may be true. Unfortunately, the fact that Bonds and Palmeiro used roids to stay productive toward the end of their careers casts a bad light on anyone who stays good into their late 30s or past... and in Clemens case, he's even gotten better at 42-43, which this day in age raises some eyebrows. Yeah, that's true too. But I don't see how anyone can say that about Clemens, and then leave Randy Johnson off the list. Both old, both still throwing smoke. But Johnson is flying under the radar when it comes to steroid talk. But neither one is a juicer in my eyes, so that doesn't matter.

Yeah, it's definitely possible. But until he gets suspended and they announce it, I'm not going to believe these rumors. I've also considered the possibility that MLB would try to cover it up if Clemens was busted for roids. Getting Palmeiro is one thing, but Roger Clemens is in a completely different class. That would taint the game more than anything. But that's probably just because I always think there's a conspiracy going on in every situation. I don't think Clemens is a juicer. I just think he works his butt off and the reason he is so successful is that he has MUCHO experience with good shape. Yeah, I read somewhere about his workout routine when he was younger. It was pretty intense, and definitely Texan. To strengthen his pitching arm, he used to jam his arm into a barrel of rice. It was like he was trying to punch through to the bottom of the barrel. I don't think he's a juicer either. But think of the black eye baseball will get if this somehow turns out to be true.

There are different types of steroids and there are some that are en vogue with pitchers. They don't bulk your muscle mass up but make your ligaments tighter so that you can snap the ball quicker and easier in your delivery, etc. I learned about them in this mandatory "steroids suck" class that I had to take when I played ball in college. I've never heard of that. That's interesting. Yeah, stuff like Creatine and Andro (to a slightly different extent) really just help your muscles recover quicker. The benefit for weight lifters is that they can work out the muscles more often since they recover that much faster.

Yeah, I know. Many steroids just help your body recover quicker. I had to learn about it in the same mandatory "steroids suck" class when I ran track in college. But down the line they contribute to the muscles deteriorating quicker. For someone at Clemens' age, he wouldn't really have an arm left. At least that's my opinion on it.

If Kerry Wood were in the rotation all year, he'd be leading the league in walks, or would be pretty close to it. That's not a closer. Yeah, he's been good since he's been back, but he's only pitched 7 innings. I find it hard to believe his control is THAT much better since he's returned that he still won't walk a ton of guys. And besides, we've been over this. WE HAVE A CLOSER. He's one of the most consistent in the league too. Yeah he might put a guy on base, but he's been doing that all year when he comes in, and he still gets the save. It's Dempster's job to lose, not Kerry's to win. -
If Selig said that, then there's no way it's true. He won't want to have to issue a retraction and look even dumber than he already does. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Pitcher's arms would fall off if they were on roids. Especially someone that's been pitching for 21 years.

The team's primary color is blue right? Wouldn't it make sense for them to wear a jersey with that color? The blues should be the normal road jerseys. Get rid of the horrible, sweat pants looking gray uniforms. I don't care if it does say "Chicago" across the front. The team looks stupid in them.

Clemens got beat tonight by Brewers. Gave up 5 runs, not sure how many were earned though. From what I hear, he looked good up until the last inning or two, that's when Milwaukee scored all their runs. Maybe that ERA won't stay as stellar all season. But ESPN said Clemens has gotten 2 runs or less in 11 of his starts, and he's 1-5 in those starts. He only has five losses on the season.

Hmm, I'd have to see the uniform before I could agree on it. If they came up with one of those sleeveless jerseys that are becoming popular, I'd never agree to it. Maybe a pure white uniform or something like that. But I don't think we'll see that for quite some time.

Yeah, I have to give the guy credit. He goes behind enemy lines and sticks to his guns. If one of us tried that at Cards Talk, we wouldn't last. Then again, it's an entirely different atmosphere over there. A lot of hatred toward our kind...

The blues seem too plain for you? What about the gray uniforms? I love the pinstripes and the blues. And if the Cubs change their logos, I might break down and cry for the rest of my life.

Yes, it could have. How funny would that have been? The runner gets lucky with a call from the ump only to get called out for that. And BACKTOBANKS, I completely agree with you. I've been one of the guys that has been lobbying to keep Maddux for next year. He may put guys on and give up some runs, but he gets the win more often than not. And that's what counts.

Lets just say Clemens pitches two games. One game he only gives up one run and loses. The next game he only gives up one run and wins. Has his value changed? No, his team is responsible for scoring the runs. So if anything, this is an argument about who's offense has more value to their team. Is Clemens any less valuable when he lost because his TEAM can't score runs?

And 4 of those losses the Astros scored 0 runs. What exactly did you want out of Clemens? A 10 inning (or more) shutout so that the Stros could finally score a run? Nope. Clemens did all he could. But if your team loses, how much value did you provide your team that day? There's no value in losing. Again, not Clemens' fault, but his team could have gotten the exact same ultimate results if you or I had been pitching that day, so what good did he do them? He kept the in the game while you probably can't even make the throw from the mound to the catcher. This whole value argument is really kind of sad. You're reaching pretty far, and it's causing your argument to wear thin.

It might just be because I'm paying more attention to it, but Dempster seems to be the man when it comes to throwing double play balls in the ninth. Whether or not Neifi wants to touch the bag or not is a different story. :wink:

I look at the end result. At the end of the day, that's all that matters. He isn't getting smacked around to the point where he's blowing leads. He's doing a consistently decent job at closing games. When Kerry Wood is healthy and starting, he's lights out. But he walks a ton of guys and puts runners in scoring position. Does that make him a bad starter? No, he finds ways to get out of it consistently.

I think Vance makes a great point though. It's not called the Most Valuable Pitcher award. If it was, I think Randy Johnson should have won it last year. He was the only thing that kept the Diamondbacks from basically losing every single game last year.

Call me crazy, but I'd take the Lamborghini any day of the week. If you happen to have a spare Lamborghini lying around that has no value to you because it has no gas, then I'll gladly take it off your hands. :wink:
