  1. We could always pray for the Yankees to not make the playoffs, and then pray that Hendry will take a chance on Torre. It's not very likely at all, and almost certainly will not happen, but it's a nice dream. Hey, whatever happened to our "Help NSBB buy part of the Cubs" initiative? We need to start buying some Tribune Co. stock as soon as possible.
  2. Nomar isn't as injury riddled as people think. He's had I think only a year and a half of his career where he has been injured. Before last year, he played pretty much every game (except in 2001). I wouldn't dream of giving him another 8 million, but if we can get him cheap, I'd say keep him around. He's a lifetime .320 hitter. Furcal might even cost more than him next year.
  3. I hear Matt Morris is a FA at the end of the year.............he's a drama queen, but at least it would hurt the Cards! Just say NO!!!!! to Matt Morris. (besides, he and Prior don't/won't get along) I think Prior and Morris woud kill each other if they were locked in the same clubhouse. My money is on Prior.
  4. Somehow I don't see this happening in any of our lifetimes. But welcome to the boards. Other team's fans like to mention that Prior can't stay healthy. And then they fault either our coaching staff, or make a sarcastic remark about his "perfect mechanics". But they also fail to realize that Prior's injuries have not been pitching related. He was hit with a line drive bullet this year, and he was injured running the bases when he ran into Giles. Wood is the only one with injury problems. Prior just has bad luck.
  5. I no longer like Chipper Jones. One because he killed us last night, and two because he just joined in Lance Berkman's crusade to destroy Wrigley.
  6. Don't you mean, "jack him up... dude." ? Jeff Kent has always been on guys who don't play the game right. Remember when he was on the same squad with Barry Bonds? There were numerous dugout arguments and close call fistfights. I may not like Kent, but I like that he'll get on guys like Milton Bradley for not running it out. Of course, Bradley, being the classy guy that he is, decided he was going to upstage Kent later in the game. (at least according to the Score) On a routine fly ball with two outs when Bradley was on base (a time when guys will normally just jog and go through the motions), Bradley decided to sprint as hard as he could around the bases.
  7. I'm sorry, but I think a 50% Nomar can be more effective than a 100% Neifi. It's well worth the risk, especially with Ronny Cedeno as a backup. All I know, is that if both Neifi AND Macias are back next year, I'm gonna.... well, I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. But it's not gonna be pretty.
  8. I was just listening to the Dan Patrick show, and Peter Gammons was on. He said that if the Yankees don't make the playoffs, Joe Torre's job is in serious jeopardy. My question is, if Torre is fired, would you want him to take Dusty's place next year?
  9. The problem with that strategy is, if Corey continues to struggle, teams will see that he's not worth it. While we want him to play to prove he's worth a trade, he can very easily prove he's NOT worth a trade. He's playing himself out of every other team's line up by struggling.
  10. Eh, if he nixed the trade to the Yankees, he must prefer to play for the Mariners over the Yankees.
  11. And Houston's collapse against the Brewers, which was as bad as our losing to the Reds the last week of the season last year. Yeah, I remember that. I saw that Houston was playing the Brewers and just about gave up hope. Who would've thought Milwaukee would ever help the Cubs out?
  12. That's the day that I lose a lot of hope, if Neifi is brought back. Can you guys tell me why Neifi would be bad as a true 25th man? Unless you bring back Nomar and know he's likely to have at least one stint on the 15-day disabled list then I could see why you wouldn't want him as a backup. But if that's the case you shouldn't re-sign Nomar. I'm just trying to figure out how many better backup shortstops there are in the majors. Okay, maybe you might want to go with Ronny Cedeno. I just hope everyone realizes this is his first season with good offensive numbers. So if he's your backup and Nomar misses a month or two of the year, is Cedeno going to be an adequate offensive player at shortstop? One year of good numbers (in his rookie year) is better than zero years of good numbers for Neifi. He had one good month this season. Other than that, he's done more harm than good. I'd love to see Nomar back for another year. Don't overpay though.
  13. Better starting pitching? I don't have any numbers, but I don't think the 2003 offense was any better than this year's offense. The 2003 team came in as underdogs. There was no pressure on them to win, so they played like there was no pressure. Then last year, some had them pegged as World Series champs. They collapsed under the pressure. And now with the raised expectations throughout the city, some of that pressure remains. Amazingly, only 3 people are still here from that 2003 team: Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, and Aramis Ramirez EDIT: 3 people from the PLAYOFF team. CPatt was out for most of that season. Thanks for making Carlos Zambrano cry. Damn, I knew I was forgetting someone. How do I forget the most animated member of the team? My bad...

  15. Yeah, that seems to be a major difference between the two teams. When the Cards get hurt, someone almost always steps up and performs. When the Cubs get hurt, we platoon the worst players we can find, and they all underperform.
  16. Yeah, I don't get it when Hendry says we don't need an overhaul. I understand the whole premise of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", but to be fair, if this team wasn't broken, they'd be going to the playoffs. It seems like they are becoming happy with mediocrity again. Oh, wait, they aren't even mediocre anymore, they're just bad.
  17. The report is that Moyer used his 10/5 rights to refuse a claim by the Yankees. This is after nixing a trade to Houston before the deadline. Yeah, a friend of mine said he heard a report that Moyer said there was no way he'd play for the Yankees.
  18. Great, so we'll have a high payroll next year. Who wants to bet that the extra money goes to offering Neifi and Macias extensions with HUGE raises? You can have all the money in the world MacPhail, but if you don't spend it right, you might as well have none.
  19. Eh, I figure I've watched them play this way all year, might as well be there to watch them go down in flames again. They can't play too much worse than they have already. Plus, IF the young guys get to play, we'll at least get to see what the future looks like.
  20. His fastball? Or his ERA? They definitely rushed him back to try and salvage a lost cause season.
  21. Santo and Pat Hughes were saying yesterday that they really hope and think Neifi will be back next year. "He's too valuable to this team to just let go." I cried when they said that. I don't think Sept 1st is early enough. The problem is, while we realize the season has been over for weeks, no one else has. And to make matters worse, it's going to drag on with the Cardinals facing three wild card contenders coming up. If the Cards can do their job against those teams, it'll keep the Cubs within "reach". Then people will still believe there's hope for this team, and Dusty won't play the youngsters.
  22. Santo was talking about that on the air a while back. Not every team allows the starter to pick, but most of them do. He said it varies from team to team. Sometimes the manager picks, sometimes the clubhouse manager picks, etc. I like it this way though. The pitcher is probably the most superstitious guy out there. I want him to go with what's going to make him comfortable.
  23. My dad takes B-12 shots. My dad is definitely not on steroids.
