  1. Anyone catch the Louisville a$$ whompin' of Oregon State? I know he's only a sophomore in his second game, but ESPN is right, Brian Brohm is a legitimate Heisman candidate. Maybe won't come close this year, but there's a very good chance he'll grab it before he graduates. 300+ yards, 5 TD passes today (in only 3 quarters of work, it was Oregon State afterall). Plus he's a friend of mine's cousin, so I'm pulling for him even though he's from a rival school.
  2. Well, if the Sox keep playing like little school girls, we won't have to worry about this happening. Sadly though, if it somehow did happen, I'd have to root for the Sox. It wouldn't even be so much of me rooting for the Sox as it would be me NOT rooting for the Cardinals. I'd be willing to deal with the years of torment from Sox fans if it kept the Cards from winning the WS. Plus, someone in Chicago needs to win a world series soon before MLB gets smart and takes both teams away and moves them to towns that can win.
  3. Great stuff... That's awesome.
  4. I understand his situation (being suspended three times for one crime), but I have no sympathy for someone that uses steroids. He could get suspended another 10 times, and I really wouldn't feel sorry for him. Doesn't matter when he stopped using them. It's also very good that baseball says they can't make exceptions. Show no weakness, and there are no loopholes.
  5. Three games in a row
  6. That might be the best post in this entire thread.
  7. Ah, that's what it was. I knew it was something like that, just wasn't sure it was quality starts. Thanks.
  8. No matter who is better, they're both going to win gold gloves this year... for like the 6th year in a row.
  9. I might be mistaken, but didn't Beurhle go like 46 games with this same stat? And the only reason his streak ended was because he was ejected? Either way, it's an impressive stat none the less.
  10. I think he should be considered for the award based on his stats. But the fact that he's behind Clemens and Carp in almost everything puts him behind them at the moment. He is within striking distance though.
  11. I'm not saying Greg has been amazing this year. The fact of the matter is, he hasn't been. No one here is arguing that. I just think he's being overly criticized for being our 2nd or 3rd best starter, overpaid or not. Yep, Wood turned it around... and ended up right back on the DL for two years. His unwillingness (if that's what it is) to change his mechanics is possibly going to keep him there too. Yeah, he had decent seasons is 2002 and 2003 (12-11, 3.67 ERA/ 14-11, 3.19 ERA - both of which aren't bad), but until he finds a way to fix his faulty mechanics (if that is the cause of this), he's going to keep winding up right where he is now.
  12. Yes, he's not the only one. I'm aware that this is a thread on Maddux, but how many threads are there bashing Maddux for being overpaid as opposed to the other overpaid players we have? I think it's hilarious that people are so quick to downplay what Maddux has done and say we'd get the same productivity from guys like Hill, Rusch, Mitre, etc. When it's pretty much a fact that he's been no worse than our 3rd best starter the past two years. I'm not arguing he's overpaid. But at least he produces somewhat, compared to the other overpaids we have. I think the defenses of him so far have been very logical. But then again, I'm not one of the guys that would rather see a bunch of crappy minor leaguers out there that can't produce half of what Greg does. I hope Wood produces too. Is it likely based on the past two years? I don't know. Is Maddux likely to win 14+ games next year? Based on the previous 17 years, I'd say yes. Who's to say Greg won't win 22 games next year. No one knows how he'll pitch, same thing with Wood. Just because he's old doesn't mean he's definitely going to have a bad year next year. But to justify Wood's contract over Maddux's because "he's still young and can turn it around", is ridiculous in my opinion. Because Wood hasn't shown anyone that he can turn it around.
  13. First one in my head was Mike Alstott. IMO, Michael Vick is a talented halfback with an arm, and nothing more. Dontrelle got a TON of exposure when he first hit it big. I remember the whole world was talking about that leg kick and side-cocked hat. But it didn't take. After a while the hype kind of faded away.
  14. So why aren't you ragging on the other overpaid players like Wood, instead of the one that is actually out there performing?
  15. He's also running away with the team lead in losses. (he's only tied for the team lead in wins, not the leader) As for Maddux's losses on the year. 5/20 vs. CHW - 7.0 IP, 3 ER (Cubs scored 1) 7/16 vs. PIT - 8.0 IP, 2 ER (Cubs scored 0) 8/06 vs. NYM - 7.0 IP, 2 ER (Cubs scored 0) 8/27 vs. FLA - 9.0 IP, CG, 2 ER (Cubs scored 1) The other ones he probably deserved, but you can't fault the guy for no run support. He also should/could have many more wins if the Cubs would hit. 4/10 vs. MIL - 3 ER, ND 4/17 vs. PIT - 2 ER, ND 4/23 vs. PIT - 2 ER, ND 7/21 vs. CIN - 3 ER, ND 7/26 vs. SF - 2 ER, ND Should he have won all those games? Probably not, but he kept the Cubs in it, they just couldn't score for him.
  16. Pujols will win one eventually. But sadly, I think the Gold Glove has become more about reputation. I can guarantee you that there were years when Maddux won it solely because he's won so many in the past. And Bonds won three in a row when he really probably only deserved one.
  17. What about the episode where Gilligan swallowed the puzzle piece, and the man in the big yellow hat had to take him to the hospital?
  18. I would concede that. I think most "defense" of Pujols defense is geared toward those that feel Pujols was buried at 1st base because he's a defensive liability. Not true. I think that Pujols is actually a very good defender. After watching him more, he's much better than I thought. I just think Lee is slightly better, and that has nothing to do with me being a Cubs fan. (If I had to only pick one of those guys to be on my team, it'd be Pujols in a landslide)
  19. I think there's a pill you can take for that.
  20. I think the real question is, should Lee win his second over Helton? Or has Maddux been good enough this year to win his 218th gold glove? Lee has to handle Aramis' and Nomar's throws while Maddux is a sinker baller that gets a lot of balls hit right back at him.
  21. They've both won for the past five years. http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/gold_glove_nl.shtml I think Andruw is slightly a better fielder. Edmonds makes a lot of diving catches, but after all the talk of him purposely slowing down to make those plays, I only count half of those diving catches as real. Just my opinion though as I'm sure they'll both win again this year.
  22. Actually, Lee's Gold Glove should've put that to bed, but I don't think you'll get many Cards fans to admit Lee is better than Pujols at anything. (Not all though, so don't jump down my throat if you feel different)
  23. "Dude, I totally played a quarterback FBI agent... Totally awesome!" http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/m_scafide/099d5630.jpg
  24. You can only keep a pitcher like Mulder down for so long. He's bound to break out and go back to the Cy Young contender form that he had with the A's.
  25. I'd much rather be in the playoffs than win a season series against the Cards. But with this Cubs team, we'll take what we can get. I'm amazed at the lack of bean balls and animosity this year. But I guess there's no point when one team is all but eliminated already.
