  1. Exactly. It'd be like changing the name of Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium. You just don't do it. I'm realistic though, and I know that someday it's going to change. But I hope that when they do change it, they do it respectfully and go with something like, "Budweiser presents Wrigley Field", or "Wrigley Field presented by Google". (Company names are just fillers)
  2. I was at that game, standing room only seats right down the first base line. And let me tell you, if you want to know why the concrete at Wrigley was cracking after that year, it's because the stadium was shaking violently after that home run. Literally. Everything was moving, the seats, the railings. It was simply amazing. I've never been apart of something that loud and that exciting before in my life. I was starting to praise Bartman for extending the series so I could be there when they won the pennant. Of course, a short while later, I'd never be that depressed before in my life. I still haven't recovered.
  3. I would take Maddux's consistency over anyone in history. Sure Pedro had one completely dominant year, and many very very good years, but Greg Maddux has been Greg Maddux for 20 years. How many consecutive years of 15+ wins? How many gold gloves? Possibly the last 300 game winner ever. Pedro is a great pitcher, but I just can't put him ahead of what Greg Maddux has done. There are a few of the greats still pitching today (Johnson, Clemens, etc.). But from what I've seen, none of them has done with the class and humility of Greg Maddux. (And not just because he's a Cub, because I know a very large portion of his numbers come as a Brave)
  4. Well folks, it's that time again. Today is the start of the 2006 Major League Baseball season. I don't know if it's symbolic or tragic that the season is opening with a Chicago White Sox game, but I do know that today is a day of hope for those on the northside of Chicago. Today is a day where every single one of us dreams of the Chicago Cubs turning their misfortune into majesty. Pain into ectasy. Pesos into dollars (what?). Today is what everyone has been waiting for through the long winter. The weather is starting to heat up, the stadium is making it's final preparations, and the ivy is coming back to life. Today is the day where we all ask the baseball gods for a small favor. We wish for the good health of our pitchers. We wish for the wise decisions from our manager. And we wish for the pure collapse of the Cardinals. Even though the Cubs don't officially open their season until Monday, there's still a different feel in the air. That's because today is opening day for Major League Baseball. I can't think of anything better. Keep the faith. Believe in your team. Good luck, 2006 Chicago Cubs... our team.
  5. NL West: Dodgers NL Central: Cardinals NL East: Mets NL Wildcard: Braves AL West: A's AL Central: Indians AL East: Yankees AL Wildcard: White Sox NLCS: Cardinals over Mets ALCS: Indians over Yankees World Series: Cardinals over Indians in 6. God I hate the thought of the Sox and Cardinals winning back to back titles.
  6. Yeah, just read that article. Interesting read. But I think they're right. If this team is going to win this year, it's all going to come down to pitching. Prior, Wood, and Miller have to come back and be back in their old form.
  7. I usually do pretty well in bracket pools. But this year the only two elite 8 teams I got right were UConn and Texas, and my entire final four is gone for the first time ever. The talent gap between mid majors is closing fast, especially with the amount of good players from major schools leaving early for the NBA. Those teams have to replace those stars with freshman or role players while the mid major players have been playing together for 2 or 3 years.
  8. While the refs may not have been perfect, they in no way "gave the game" to Washington. A friend of mine tried to tell me that the refs gave UNC the title last year because they were calling fouls on Augustine and not on May. But it's hard to get big men in foul trouble when all you do is shoot threes. But back to this year, what an amazing tournament. Who would've thought that the final four wouldn't have one single team from the Big East, the Big Ten, or the ACC. Simply amazing. Go George Mason.
  9. Oh, I give Illinois credit, they did hit their shots, and they had a lot to do with winning that game. But Arizona didn't play to win, they played not to lose. The Illinois steals you saw looked more like horrible passes from Arizona to me. They had a complete breakdown at the end of the game. I'm not taking anything away from Illinois, but it looked to me like Arizona just choked. Like I said, it depends on what side of the fence you sit. Illinois fans saw a tremendous comeback. Non-Illinois fans saw a tremendous collapse. Either way it was still a great game, and yes, should be an ESPN Classic.
  10. I guess it depends on what side of the fence you sit on. I didn't see an Illinois win in that game, nor did I see an Illinois comeback. I saw an Arizona loss, and an Arizona collapse. It was still a great game, but I saw more of a collapse than I did a comeback.
  11. I'm three points back lying in the weeds (Special Sauce). I lost 3 sweet sixteen teams already, but kept all of my elite 8 and final four teams. I got screwed by San Diego State's point guard not knowing the rules, and by a friend of mine talking me out of picking George Mason over Michigan State. "Michigan State is always tournament ready", my @$$.
  12. Yeah, I definitely got a chuckle out of that one.
  13. Unfortunately. My money's on the Domincan team now. The good news in all of this is Barrett and Lee can get back to the Cubs, and the new pitchers can get some time in with Barrett.
  14. I was amazingly close to picking them to upset Memphis. Bucknell could be the sleeper team that Gonzaga used to be.
  15. See, I'm the other way around. I fill out one bracket, and use that bracket for every pool I'm in. Filling out multiple brackets may help you win, but if it's not for money, what's the point? It takes all the skill out of it by having five different brackets in my opinion. Had this discussion at work today (slow day in the stock market). One guy said he could take the time to fill out every single bracket combination possible, that way he'd be guaranteed to win. But would he really have won?
  16. West Virginia hasn't played well as of late. Villanova is too guard oriented, and Allen Ray is not at full strength. Their big man in foul trouble can really hurt their chances if they go up against a team with one or two solid power forwards or centers. Syracuse might have used up too much of their magic to sneak their way through the Big East tourney much like West Virginia did last year. Talent wise, no one can top UConn. Now if they actually show up and play the whole tournament remains to be seen.
  17. My elite 8: Duke Texas Pitt Gonzaga UConn UNC Boston College Georgetown Final Four: Duke Pitt UConn Boston College UConn over Duke in the final: 67-61
  18. I'm not sure of the stats, but I thought Cedeno was playing amazing in winter ball. I know it's not the same as spring training, but I think it needs to be considered at least.
  19. Hey, dont' feel too bad. I went to a college that wasn't even good enough to make the Big East tournament. NIT would take a miracle right now. Um, Go Demons?
  20. They played one hell of a tournament. The committee looks at your last ten games pretty closely. They also won four games in four days in probably the best conference, beating ranked teams (including the #1 team in the country) almost the entire way. I thought they'd get a 6 seed, but a 5 isn't that far off.
  21. They're not supposed to look at how many teams a conference is getting. They're supposed to pick the 34 best teams that didn't receive an automatic bid. You can't penalize a team because 8 other teams in their conference were also good.
  22. Yeah, Jay Bilas is on tv right now, and he's PISSED. He said Air Force and UAB are not deserving because they haven't beaten ANYONE outside of their conference (he emphasized that word, so I will to). They got in despite not playing anyone outside of their conference, but Florida State got snubbed for that very reason. He's also upset (as is everyone else) that Cincinnati didn't get in. Seedings are horrible this year.
  23. That shocked me. I thought if there were a Big East team that wasn't going to make it, it'd be Seton Hall. Michigan out too. Committee was on something this year. Even the seedings are way off. I'm gonna have to pick a lot of upsets in my bracket now.
  24. Yeah, that's what I thought too. If you ever want to know what Pujols, Ortiz, and those other big bats would look like in a Cubs uniform, just watch them play in the WBC.
  25. Yeah, but that was before he won a batting title and hit 46 home runs. Sosa hit third most of his career, but no one would hit him there now after his ability has changed. With the season Lee had last year, I just assumed he'd hit 3rd or 4th depending on where ARod hit. Not really a big deal, just something I noticed.
