  1. You're right. I've seen poor fundimental play in games where the Cubs aren't involved. It does happen, and Sandberg was right in his HOF speech that someone's game shouldn't consist of entirely home runs and nothing else. However, it is aboslutely and totally inexcusable to see this team make mistakes over and over and over again that little league players know not to make.
  2. Steve Nebraska, watch out.
  3. As long as the Yankees don't get in and the Cards lose in the first round, I'll be happy.
  4. I'm rooting for the Phillies, as I dislike the Fish (for obvious reasons). The Phils always seem to fade down the stretch. Houston was there last year, and while I don't really dislike them, I'm not rooting for them either. With the loss tonight, the Phils drop 1.5 back of Houston. The Phils have always been my 2nd favorite NL team. I hope they can pull it out. Mods, sorry if there is a thread of this type elsewhere.
  5. Dusty would just find new toys if you took these away. Maybe not. If Hendry tweaks the roster just right he may be forced to play Murton, Cedeno, etc. But this wouldn't help his in-game managing any.
  6. That commercial makes me feel all nostalgic. Hats off to whoever wrote the copy on that one. They did a great job!
  7.  Sammy, yes. Nomar, no. Sammy, when healthy, sucks. Nomar, when healthy, is still an all-star caliber SS.
  8. boy it sure would suck to have joe mauer behind the plate. or, man, mark teixeira at first base would just KILL this team. He never said that. He said our ROTATION would be weaker, not our overall TEAM. show me where he mentions that the rotation would be weaker. he says we'd have z and wood at the end, but the whole attitude of the post is that we "got lucky" to get prior and that if we didn't get him, we wouldn't have picked anyone like him. sorry to burst your bubble, but i think joe mauer and mark teixeira are pretty comparable players. I never said they weren't comparable players. Mauer and Teixeria are awesome and will be stars in this league for a long time. I interpreted his post as there weren't any pitchers on the same level as Prior.

  10. Atlanta will probably never let him go, but if his contract ever runs out, I'd give him a blank contract, let him work for whatever he wants. He'd be worth every penny.
  11. Only 2 outfielders? Yeah, the Dominican team will be so good it's unfair.
  12. I think you'd have to go the signing bonus route. I know back-loaded contracts are all the rage, but front loaded? Do you really think he'd want to take a paycut as the contract went on? I'd have his accountant explain the phrase "present value of money" to him several times over, if necessary. :D Works for me. Buy him a house on the lake, too.
  13. viewtopic.php?t=20816&start=0 There is your thread. The lineup discussion starts a few pages in. You'll probably want to bump it and have the mods lock this one.

  15. Screw character. If Manny hits as well as he usually does for us, he can sacrifice goats to Satan in the locker room before every game for all I care. People put far too much stock into chemistry and character. Look at those Oakland teams of the 70's that won 3 championships in a row. They would routinely get into fistfights in the locker room before and after games, but all they would do is win.
  16. His numbers stand a good chance of improving in year 1 in a move from SD to Chicago just due to park factors. I'd sign him to a 4 year deal with the full intention of trading him after year 2. 4 may be a bit much. I'd go for 3.
  17. I wouldn't mind Giles so much, but what are the chances he keeps his numbers up and doesn't have a huge dropoff?
  18. So what you're saying is that Hendry is stuck with Dusty, like it or not?
  19. YOU'RE RIGHT, INTELLIGENCE IS JUST OOZING OUT. So I misspelled some words. That's what I get for typing when tired. I guess misspelling of words means I'm an idiot, huh? at lea$t I dont type like thi$. Has that guy actually contributed anything of value since joining here? Or is his whole gimmick typing like thi$ and ppl think it$ kool?
  20. I'm really shocked they haven't been tougher on him. Odds are this team finishes sub-.500 after 88 wins last year, and he's dodging questions left and right. Any other market he'd be raked over the coals.
  21. Pretty simple. Look @ what Prior and Wood did in 2003 compared to this year. That's not the whole reason. A part, yes, but not the whole reason. The main reason was because the Cardinals and Astros weren't that good. We lucked into 2003, and it may have been the worst thing to happen to this team. Why are the Cubs the only team in which good things turn in to bad things years down the road?
  22. If a player missed a sign during a crucial stretch in the game, the first thing I do as manager is chew his butt or if I'm in a patient mood, ask him about what happened. The fact that Baker/Speier/Clines etc. didn't even mention anything to Hairston shows how inept this coaching staff really easy. No wonder why players want to play for Baker, they don't catch an earful when they mess up. That's why he's the players manager. You don't have to play hard, and he won't get on you when you screw up. It's like you can go out there and half ass it and still get paid. Wish I had a job like that.
  23. Pretty simple. Look @ what Prior and Wood did in 2003 compared to this year. That's not the whole reason. A part, yes, but not the whole reason.
  24. OMG, I'm hoping Baker doesn't it. Seriously, I don't know if I can handle 2-3 more years of him. I don't see how Baker would turn it down. Any other market in baseball and he'd be raked over the coals. In Chicago, he can hide and place blame on others, and never be held accountable for anything. You think they'd have put up with Dusty's crap this long in LA or New York, even Miami or Dallas? Was he like this in San Fran, or not as bad?
  25. Good for you, Bruce. It's good that someone asks the tough questions. I wonder what will be done about the players missing signs. Probably nothing. Are you hearing anything about the Hendry/Baker contract extensions? Is this legit or someone just making up a story? Did you ask Hendry about the fiasco today? Do you know what he said?
