  1. Anyone still willing to give Miller a few more starts? Wind blowing out today or not, he's not a ML pitcher anymore at this point.
  2. I really don't like listening to McCarver/Buck unless I absolutely have to...
  3. where is it being argued that murton is a superstar? we're arguing that he's better than floyd (who has average to below average speed and certainly below average defense now, as well). Some on this board think that he is a superstar but point taken. Those things also do not make a "good" player. It makes an average player, which is what he is. I haven't seen anyone declare him a superstar. He has been an average player to this point, and he might never have the power to be an above average left fielder. But on a team that is as OBP-starved as ours has been, it would be nice to stick Murton in the OF and 2 spot for the rest of the year.
  4. There is no way that is a charge on Hinrich. Haslem wasn't even set when Hinrich released the ball
  5. http://www.firejoemorgan.com/search/label/hawk%20harrelson The only thing unique about Harrelson's perspective is his lack of knowledge.
  6. Corey was put on the bereavement list because his grandfather passed away, I imagine thats why EPatt isn't in the lineup as well.
  7. Bruce Miles said "Hendry wouldn't deal Hill for Dunn straight up." He was speaking hypothetically, I don't believe this deal was ever even rumored.
  8. and apparently you think the answer is manliness. No, more like - preparedness! Pitchers today, don't prepare like they did in the 60's and 70'swhen they threw more innings, had less rest, more double headers, 4 man rotations and threw more pitches. Prior has come up lame in 4 straight spring trainings, after 5 months of rest and time to PREPARE. Does anybody else wonder, what the hell does this guy do in the offseason??? I don't wonder that, because we know what he did. He had a shoulder strengthening program he was on. Doesn't look like it helped much, but its not like these guys sit back and do nothing in the offseason. We don't know what else they work on, often we hear about how some guy developed a new pitch in the offseason. I'm really tired about hearing how tough players were decades ago, and how much better everything was.
  9. I really wish Steve Stone would just shut up and go away.
  10. The timing on his jump could not have been worse
  11. The one start just reinforces what many of us have been saying since spring training, its not what we're basing our opinions on. Even if Miller turned in a decent outing I'd still want him out, he doesn't look anything like he used to.
  12. I believe it was MacPhail who said they would have called Angel up in 2003 if he stayed healthy. Why does he need more time to develop? He needs innings more than anything else. He logged time at AAA and in the majors last year, its not like we're throwing Jeff Samardzija out there. Eventually a player needs to be "thrown to the wolves."
  13. The whole point of this is that Wade Miller isn't going to help us win now, and Angel Guzman isn't going to develop pitching once a week in mopup duty. You're arguing a point that's not being made. You're basing this on the assumption that we are condemning Miller for just this one start, when really many haven't wanted him in the rotation since spring training. You say we're basing our opinions on Miller on a small sample size, but you're saying Guzman might struggle because of spring training? Completely unrelated. Murton and Soriano have put up good years in recent history, such as Murton's 2nd half last year and Soriano's entire 2006 season. Wade Miller hasn't been successful in a while, and when he was, he had better stuff than he does now.
  14. I don't know where you're getting that impression. The people calling for Miller to be removed want Guzman in his stead, not Prior. It's more an overall impression since comming to this board. I've been suprised by some people calling for players to be removed or play this guy not that guy. I also remember a few posts about Prior and Miller from spring training and remember seeing frustration about Prior not making it again. I'm just wondering how much of this impatients stems from anger at Prior rather then anger at Miller. If there is anger at Miller for one bad start then I'm worried. If Miller came out with good stuff and got rocked around, I think some would be optimistic his command would improve and he'd be servicable. He didn't have either of them, and there isn't much reason to believe he'll ever recover his old form. I still don't know why Piniella picked him to be the fifth starter, Miller's recent history isn't impressive and I think its stupid to give away a spot based on spring training results. I don't think any of the "impatience" really has anything to do with Prior. Like TT said, we wanted Guzman to win the spot over Miller. If Guzman started and had a rough outing, he would still have the stuff and upside to bounce back. Does anyone really think Miller has become a finesse pitcher like some have made him out to be? I always thought that was a baseless argument.
  15. Yup, which is what many of us said in spring training when we wanted Guzman as the fifth starter.
  16. Its too bad Barrett can't play shortstop.
  17. And for those that don't live near an L stop? Screw them right, I mean they can't possibly be Cubs fans right? Where did I mention a prairie? Soldier Field is close to the L, close the two highways, close to a major road for buses and cabs (LakeShore Drive). Have you ever tried to drive to or from a Bears game? It's a nightmare. Also Soldier field is not close to any L stops. It's a hike from the nearest one. Yes and it's close to the Roosevelt stop on the redline. Take a cab or walk from there. I have driven to Bears games, as well as taken the L and buses. I'll admit, none are perfect but at least they are options. With Wrigley, the only viable options are taking the L or driving and parking at a remote lot (which are free and have a free shuttle by the way which is fantastic). They tried to build a remote lot closer to the park and the neighborhood said "No". Buses and cabs are horrible after games. Has anyone here been to a game at BankOne? Or Safeco? Or Turner? All have very good access to public transportation. Not to mention all of the fan/family friendly aspects that I mentioned about the Cell, shorter lines, better statistics, better food, better walkways, better sight lines..... Too bad its not nearly as fun a place to see a game.
  18. You hear Cub-bashing, I hear honesty. "Honest" or not, I have trouble respecting the opinion of someone who once suggested we trade Aramis Ramirez for Cesar Izturis.
  19. And according to Oneri Fleita, that point will come when Prior can throw in the neighborhood of 5 innings/100 pitches. Makes perfect sense to me. No point in burning out the Iowa bullpen while Prior regains his armstrength and endurance. Agreed with the bullpen, but if he threw 4 innings/75-80 pitches that shouldn't be too much for a bullpen to cover, and he was getting to that point when he left spring training. One start isn't too big of an issue, but I hope it doesn't turn into more. 4 innings? I'd want my starters being able to at least six for my pen. Thats still five innings to make up, and while you usually carry a long reliever, it still puts unnecessary stress on a bullpen. Prior doesn't need to face AAA competition, he's proved he can get ML batters out, he just needs to keep pitching.
  20. Hahahaha, was it even his decision, or did the Cubs tell him to stay in Mesa? Hahahaha, I don't know. If you were a betting man, what would you put your money on? Its been pretty common in the past to keep pitchers on minor league rehab assignments with the warmer climate teams. I really doubt that this was Prior's call, or that he could decide where he goes anyway.
  21. Ervin Santana + blue chip prospect + mid level prospect? You just want him out of the division because of how well he tends to pitch against the Cardinals
