  1. It's Rzblighthsneswers! C'mon, you're better than that!
  2. I'm going to miss this thread. I've read every post. Great plots, sub-plots, tangents and bizarre off-topic topics have made this an instant classic.
  3. Seems like the hits just keep in coming to the Red Sox: http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view/2011_1021most_loved_teammate_yup_lackey/ Ouch!
  4. And it's not irrelevant because of the precedent. For lateral moves, you have stuff like Randy Winn or the two Florida prospects going back in return. For promotions, you have Andy MacPhail going for a random A baller. Plus in this case you have the Cubs taking on a significant financial obligation for Theo that they don't have to. Bingo. Actually, precedents are irrelevant until a mediator steps in. Of course Boston is going to ask for the moon, regardless of any promotion Epstein may be getting. And of course the Cubs are going to compensate for what they deem is fair value, since Epstein is under contract with Boston for another year. Both sides are seeing that "fair value" quite differently. Look at it this way: Seattle didn't take Randy Winn for Lou Piniella because of any precedent--they took him because they felt it was a fair trade. The Twins didn't take a Low A pitcher because of precedent, either. They did what they felt was in their best interests. Right now, the two sides are attempting to reach this fair value on their own. But if they can't, either Boston walks away (highly unlikely), the Cubs walk away (also highly unlikely) or a mediator steps in (which is becoming increasingly likely, though both sides would have to agree to a mediator AND abide by the decision that mediator comes to).
  5. Even if the Cubs and Red Sox fail to reach a deal, Cub fans can take heart in the fact that while Epstein would have been fantastic, it's not so much the person they're looking for as GM as it is the philosophy the organization is heading towards. This is what excites me. And I have little doubt Ricketts can find someone else out there who can effectively implement this philosophy. Now that the terms of the deal to Epstein have been made public, as well as the level of commitment the Cubs are making toward this new approach, has turned the heads of the candidates who were on the short list, such as a certain A. Friedman down in Tampa.
  6. Just read all 49 pages. To recap: Actual information: Theo Epstein most likely coming to the Cubs. Not 100% certain yet. Compensation package is a sticking point. Fan reaction on NSBB: excitement, dancing, boners, drinking, screaming, more boners, enthusiasm, shock, mild trepidation, boners, some orgasms, boners, boners and more boners. What'd I miss?
  7. Not sure how the last week of the regular season isn't devalued, particularly this season. Over the last five days, it was down to the Cards and Braves in the NL and Red Sox and Rays in the AL. With a two team wild card, those last five games are totally irrelevant. All four teams are playing out the string and setting themselves up for that one game playoff. No one would have cared about the drama that unfolded Wednesday night. The real reason Bud Selig wants to add a second wild card team is to give a slight competitive edge to the division winners. Wild card teams will not have the luxury of setting up their rotations knowing they have to get past the play-in game.
  8. Just because one season doesn't work out in favor of 2 WCs doesnt mean it should be scrapped. Right now the NL Wild Card will be decided by one team playing a 100 loss team and another playing a 100 win team. Wouldn't you rather see them settle it against each other? Plus you can't even really look at it the same as if the season was played with 2 WCs in each league at play. Maybe the Giants don't play a bunch of young players or stick with their regular rotation if they are within striking distance of the WC with a week left. Maybe a team that's on the fringe of the WC race in July makes a couple of trades knowing they can get back into the race. An in the AL you had one team playing an also-ran fighting for a spot against another team whose opponent had the best record in the AL. If you stayed up to watch the finish of both games (I did!), you would likely have found it to be the most amazing night of baseball in a long time. I'll still stand behind my original assessment. I don't want anything taking away from the value of the regular season. Doesn't make me right and you wrong. Just my opinion.
  9. There is a lot of interest in four games today involving the Cards, Braves, Red Sox and Rays. With a two team wild-card system, no one cares about these games. I'm not a big fan of anything that would take value away from the regular season.
  10. iowa cubs - 16th out of 16 teams in walks drawn (431 - top team has drawn 631) tennessee smokies - 10th out of 10 teams in walks drawn (442 - top team has drawn 566) daytona cubs - 9th out of 12 teams in walks drawn (375 - top team has drawn 513; bottom team 354) peoria chiefs - 16th out of 16 teams in walks drawn (350 - top team has drawn 544) boise hawks - 2nd out of 8 teams in walks drawn (292 - top team has drawn 370; bottom team 218) arizona league cubs - 13th out of 13 teams in walks drawn (164 - top team has drawn 244) Sad statistics, for sure. But there's a very good possibility the first conversation between the new GM and Flieta goes something like this. New GM: "Oneri, we're going to have a different approach to our player development. From here on out we're going to teach the values of patience, plate discipline and walks." First possibility: Flieta: "Sir, yes sir!" Second possibility: Flieta: "I quit."
  11. No link to provide, unfortunately, but Newsradio 780, WBBM-AM in Chicago is reporting that Andrew Friedman DOES HAVE INTEREST in the Cubs GM job.
  12. Telling players not to talk about the Zambrano situation would be much worse than "leaking" information. Not that the Cubs leaked any information in this instance.
  13. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/7128572-417/carlos-zambrano-and-the-cubs-what-went-wrong.html Sheds a bit more light on some of the private problems the team was alluding to. Oh, shocker that the Cubs are leaking this. Yes, how dare THE CUBS let anyone know that Zambrano drinks coffee. AND RED BULL TOO! Please, please, please do not confuse "players" talking about Zambrano with "the Cubs." You're grasping at straws you desperately want there but don't know for sure. Makes you look bad.
  14. Cracks me up how several posters dismiss the baseball "experts" like Olney and Gammons as hacks at one moment and take them as gospel the next.
  15. It's annoying as sin. You don't need to see where the pitch is all the time. I want to see it if an umpire makes a bad call or if a pitcher throws a fatty that the batter jumps on. But to keep it on the screen all the time is dumb.
  16. Soriano is not loafing. He's just giving himself time to calculate the percentages of a successful diving catch. So he need to improve his risk assessment. It's the new "sixth tool" that baseball analysts are now talking about.
  17. Silva is scheduled to start on Monday against Cleveland. After his "I deserve better than this" rant, would you still let him go out and pitch? At this point, I'd tell him to pack his bags now and hope other teams see his last start as the pitcher he thinks he is.
  18. Definitely. Toss on a player option for a 7th and a club option for an 8th, too. I'd even throw in a Hall of Fame clause: You have another $5 million coming your way if you can sway the HOF board into letting you wear a Cub's cap when you're enshrined.
  19. Anyone else find it amusing that the first line of the article states, "Lance Berkman's honesty is one of his best-known traits, and it usually serves him quite well." Was that the same honesty on display when he faked getting beaned in the head against the Cubs?
  20. I'm trying to think about all the good he did for the game, for the Cubs organization and for JDRF. But I still keep coming back to his HOF snub. And he never got to celebrate a WS. Like CR said, "Screw you, veteran's committee."
  21. This thread needs to be unstickied!
  22. Just watched the episode. Very touching. Now go work on getting a #@*! World Series Championship!
  23. Normally I don't jump into pissing matches. I'm not sure what possessed me to read all the threads after Gould's game-winning field goal, but I did. And I gotta say; Erik, you really suck at this arguing thing.
