  1. If he's ready at the plate, he can learn the position at the big league level. Maybe a few games in AAA to ease him in, at most. Yeah, not talking about a long time frame. But I think it'll be more than just "a few games." Given his high error tally at short last year, the coaches will want to make sure he's at least a little comfortable at a new position this year before moving him up.
  2. It's also a little bit about what Castro has to prove, too. If Starlin can rebound in 2014 like the organization thinks he will, then some of Baez's development will have to occur in the field learning a new position. He is still considered a shortstop. If Castro shows signs of life at the plate--and in the field--it won't be long before Baez is moved to a new position.
  3. One year at $4 million isn't what ticked people off. It was the three year, $10 million contracts that Jim Hendry was so fond of handing out to relievers. Bobby Howry and Scott Eyre come to mind. I'm sure there are others.
  4. I say let Hollandsworth have it; if anyone deserves to be driven madness by the collection of despair on the field it's him. I understand the sentiment, but that would be totally unfair to Pat Hughes. I think at this point, unless there's something special about Coomer I don't know about, I'd rather have Pat go solo.
  5. Looks like the Cubs have narrowed it down to two candidates for the radio gig: http://www.robertfeder.com Might have to scroll down a bit to get to the story. Don't know much about Ron Coomer's talents in the booth. Todd Hollandsworth is... well... not good. Not. Good. At. All. Rooting for a dark horse candidate to emerge.
  6. Some backlash toward Peralta--and the Cardinals--regarding the contract. http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2013/11/24/5140762/jhonny-peralta-cardinals-contract-mlb-free-agents-2013 I like that some of it's coming from players. Apparently, there are some Cardinal fans who aren't pleased, either.
  7. Please do not give Ricketts any ideas. Also, I think that was the original market inefficiency, like back in the Al Spalding days. Richie "Gravedigger" Hebner came to mind immediately.
  8. Acta probably would have been better off had he not tossed in the "2,000 at-bats." Obviously, minor league at-bats are looked at qualitatively and quantitatively. So it's tough to really assign a number. But his overall sentiment still sounds good. But here's a question: is there anything a manager can do to soften the transition of a player who may have been rushed? Should they sit and watch some pitchers or players? Or do they keep trotting them out there?
  9. It wouldn't be a lie. Like I initially stated, I would love it if all along they've been working out some back-room deals with Rosemont (or any place that would be feasible, for that matter). Then go public when they're ready to knock Tunney and the rooftop owners on their collective behinds with the news the team is moving. Again, it's a pipe dream. But the idea of them abandoning Wrigley Field doesn't bother me in the least.
  10. One of my friends is a huge Pirates fan. He took his son to a game against the Cardinals in St. Louis in early September. They had seats about nine rows up from the Pirate dugout. Because they wore black and stuck out like sore thumbs, Neil Walker told them to come down by the dugout. About ten minutes later, they walked away with a couple baseballs signed by just about everybody who was in the dugout at the time, signed programs, caps, and a couple of t'shirts. Pretty cool.
  11. I just don't know how much credibility that threat would have. There's not many people who would believe the Cubs are actually in the process of moving to Rosemont or whatever. They'd need to do something more to make it real. For example, when Ricketts had Naples, Florida thinking that they would get the Cubs to move there for Spring Training. Those people were holding meetings with the Cubs, town-hall type Q&A sessions, etc. It very publicly felt like the Cubs were moving in that direction. I don't know if that was all just a facade, but if it was, it worked very well. I don't even want them to even threaten to move. I would love a press conference where they just say, "We're gone. You had your chance. It clearly didn't work. We're moving." Again, a pipe dream, but Tunney's game is old. Just show him he overplayed his hand.
  12. The correct response from the Cubs should be, "Well, the reason why we're not starting any renovations is because we're moving. And we don't want to sink another cent into the place. We're making arrangements with the White Sox and Brewers to use their ballparks beginning in 2015 while we make arrangements for a new facility to open up in Rosemont, which we hope will be ready in time for the start of the 2016 season. We've been working behind the scenes with Rosemont for the past several months. We needed a second plan in place because we just haven't been able to work with the groups we need to work with to keep Wrigley Field a viable place to play. Sorry." I know it's a pipe dream, but it would be soooo cool to see the reaction of Tunney and rooftop owners.
  13. Last Steve Rosenbloom quote ever.
  14. He says he started taking the stuff into 2011 because of a nagging injury. Kinda goes counter to the lawsuit filed against him by a long-time but now former friend: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/defamatory-comments-at-root-of-lawsuit-against-ryan-braun-b9979424z1-220295511.html This is an interesting part of the lawsuit, though it falls under what can best be described by me as legal mumbo-jumbo. This is gonna be fun!
  15. Here's a short list of guys the Nationals should be trading for to keep other teams from getting them: Michael Bowden Kevin Gregg Blake Parker Carlos Villanueva Donnie Murphy Cody Ransom Logan Watkins Brian Bogusevic Cole Gillespie Darnell McDonald I have no doubt left out more than a few names.
  16. He's not going to be well-received in Arizona, that's for sure. Talking with some Brewer fans, there are many of them who hope he goes away.
  17. We now return to our regularly scheduled bashing of "D-bag of the Decade" Ryan Braun: http://bigstory.ap.org/article/rodgers-says-he-was-lied-braun Aaron Rodgers speaks. And he's not happy. Ha-ha!
  18. One more hurdle cleared, one more to go: Tribune story
  19. The players receiving 100 game suspensions might get them started quicker than we think. If the first 50 games of the suspensions are upheld, they might start serving the time while arguing over the next 50. In Braun's case, I'd be happy with a 50 game suspension, a public apology to Dino, public service announcements telling kids how bad it is to use steroids and then lie about it (NSBB posters get to write the script) as well as daily urine tests for the rest of his playing career.
  20. http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?c_id=ari&content_id=28591243&partnerId=as_mlb_20130704_9492474 Bunting for a double
  21. Start of the 2010 season against the Braves. Marmol is in for the save and Andrew Heyward, who was a rookie at the time and off to a good start, was coming to the plate. I remember telling my son, "This guy is about to get an education on major league sliders." Three sliders and three bad swings later, Heyward was shaking his head walking back to the dugout. When he was on, at times you needed a yardstick to measure how far batters missed his slider.
  22. In the same vein as a couple other posters, the incredibly intelligent and totally unbiased Paul Sullivan viewed this non-trade as another embarrassment for the Cubs front office. But I'm trying to figure out how it's embarrassing. Was it embarrassing that they backed out? That news of the trade leaked? I really want to know how this is embarrassing.
