  1. I want to believe he's clean and always has been clean but I wish he would stay retired and keep quiet. "They don't have no evidence"? "They haven't been writing a book about me"? C'mon Sammy. To me, when he says things like that it just confirms the doubts about him.
  2. 12/19/01 Are you referring to the past-his-prime signing of Moises Alou? When was the last time was signed an in-his-prime premiere FA? recordset rsCubs = null? Ahh database code humor .. don't see that everyday  Does Andre Dawson count? Age 32 when the Cubs signed him.
  3. Same here, I don't want either of them. Sheff is just one of those players I do not like. I like players that help the Cubs win - I remember that whole "going with good guys" after 2004 didn't pan out so well... If Kim-Jong Il had a nasty slider I'd want him in the bullpen. I wouldn't be surprised if the North Korean "press" has clocked his fastball at 100+ mph. But as far as dictators go, I'd take Fidel Castro circa late 50's ... I understand the kid had nothing on his fastball but had a filthy curve.
  4. A while back I asked what sort of MLB numbers Matsuzaka's NPB stats would roughly project to. Not sure if this has been posted yet, but Jim Albright has done some research which is discussed here: http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/putting-a-price-on-matsuzaka/ Keep in mind the Yankees were the team that was used for the projection method, so throw out those 19-5, 17-4 projected WL records (a team stat). But look at the rest of the numbers ... if he even just meets those projections he's a top 5 pitcher in either league. If he exceeds them, he'll win Cy Young.
  5. Quoted for truth. Obviously Soriano is a fine ballplayer but I'm in solidly the camp of "he won't be worth the money". CLee will probably go to Houston and continue to torment the Cubs - I'd almost rather overpay for him than Soriano, but I'd pass on CLee too. Which brings me to a depressing q: At what point do we say forget 2007 and let's look next year's FA list? A fatter list should (in theory) mean better value for the $.
  6. I definitely tip my cap to the Cards - not TLR. Edmonds was about the only guy I really hated to see jumping around; aside from him and TLR it's hard to dislike the rest of the Cards. I'm happy for some of the Cards fans around here who seem like good guys - CFiCT, wolf, etc. I get the feeling that if by some miracle the Cubs ever win it all, they would be here the next day giving us kudos.
  7. Misery loves company ... I didn't want to read this thread but felt compelled to. I always include Houston in the short list of archrivals. I hate that team almost as much as the Cards or Sox. So those three arch-rivals have already won 4 out of 6 pennants the past three years and are about to take 2 out of 3 crowns. A friend of mine who's a Cards fan smiled at me today: "Why so glum?" Me: "You know damn well why." Him (laughing): "Jealous much?" Of course I'm jealous - I admit it. I'd almost rather that the Cards had won with their 2004 juggernaut than this mediocre-but-suddenly-overachieving squad. But watching the Red Sox win that year was the only baseball joy I've felt since the Cubs beat Atlanta in 2003. Yep, these are the worst of times. :(
  8. I think Boras' algorithm is to take the upper end of a fair salary range and multiply by two.
  9. In 8 seasons with the Seibu Lions Matsuzaka posted a 1.14 WHIP, giving up 1 HR every 12.5 IP. Does anyone know what these numbers project to at the MLB level?
  10. that's a beautiful rendition...doesn't surprise me at all that people were in an uproar about it though. I agree - it's a beautiful rendition and at the time I think the uproar naturally fell along political lines (loved by left, reviled by right). One fan was quoted the next day in the NY Times as saying "I'm young enough to understand it, but I think it stunk. ... It was non-patriotic." It actually hit the top 50 on the US charts a few weeks later -- first time a version of the national anthem ever charted.
  11. Lure Crime Dog out of retirement to play 1B and they're all set. "We're on a mission from God -- I mean, Schuerholz."
  12. utterly Punk'd - that puts to shame anything Ashton Kutcher ever did.
  13. That's too bad - a pretty good version of the Star Spangled Banner came out of the last time Stl played a WS game at Det, 38 years ago: http://www.josefeliciano.com/anthem.html
  14. Faceman, I think the position you're taking is difficult because it's hard to separate subjective feelings about being an underdog vs objective facts. Subjectively, I think most people would rather be the underdog in almost any competitive situation, all other things being equal, for many of the reasons you state (reduced pressure, more to prove, etc). I know I would. But objectively, the underdog is almost by definition the less talented team, and over time that willl manifest itself statistically as a disadvantage. There are always going to be short-term flukes and streaks. I'm not sure if the recent spate of upsets in the playoffs you cited is significant. But I am confident that if we pulled a long history of WL record in MLB postseason play, the underdog will underperform the favorite by at least 10% (somewhere between 40% and 45% winnng pct over the favorite) in the long run.
  15. Is this another "Aramis is a lazy oaf who doesn't want to work" post? Lighten up Francis. No, it's not another "Aramis likes to loaf" post (and even if he did I subscribe to the "give me a lazy 900+ OPS guy over a 750 OPS hustler" philosophy). I'd hate to see him leave but I'm getting the same feeling that others have expressed here - that ARam will not be back. I should have phrased it better but I was only throwing out Piniella as a possible influencing factor if indeed ARam does walk. Some of the Cub players' public reactions to the Piniella hiring have been ... a little odd (Eyre).
  16. It's hard to imagine ARam looking forward to playing w/Piniella at the helm. It's like someone before was saying here: hiring Lou = kissing ARam goodbye.
  17. ... and if you take strength of schedule into account where would the Cards be in the AL Central ... well .... ok, that would make the sign too big.
  18. Sarcasm noted, but my point is the same as wolf's. Very very few of us were complaining about Sosa's "jerkness" while he was putting up monster numbers. Pujols clearly does a lot for the community, e.g. his Family Foundation charity. He's going to have to do a lot worse than snub a few members of the media or flip his bat after going yard for me to call him a "jerk". That's cool. I don't spend much time thinking about his jerkiness either. I just don't get the point in chastising somebody who actually does point out that he's a jerk. I don't remember chastising anyone - what I said was that the thread should have ended with wolf's post. If Pujols is a jerk then so are at least half the players in MLB. And I certainly don't get the Bonds comparison.

  20. This thread should have ended with this post from Wolf, which I agree 100% with. On class, Bonds isn't even in the same ballpark as Pujols. Let's face it, the game has changed. Players -- and not just the superstars -- tend to do more "antics" these days (staring down umps, flipping bats, snub the media, etc) compared to yesteryear players. To be honest I wish ARam would show some of the competitive fire Pujols does. I don't see what's wrong with respecting a players ability while at the same time acknowledging his jerkitude. What is wrong with pointing out that a guy is a jerk? Fine - he's a jerk. So was MJ, worshipped by Bulls fans everywhere. Admit it, no one here would be calling Pujols a jerk if he were a Cub.

  22.    That Buckner article is just obnoxious. The eye roll is the perfect emoticon for any reference to the 5-letter word that starts with 'c' or four-letter word that starts with 'j'. I can't even bring myself to type the damn words. Oh, so thaaaaat's the reason the Cubs lose! No accountability from management or players required! Instant magical exoneration.
  23. I am tired of these beautifull girls you keeping flashing us Ole Miss, I am starting to believe they are really your sisters and these are family vacation photos. If not, then you are my idle. OMC is my favorite poster - I usually agree with what he has to say (and even if I didn't he'd still be my fave poster :D ) But it does make regret not going to Dixieland for college ...
  24. I love both of these ideas. The ASG winner determining homefield was such a dumb idea. But I think I'm in the minority on the two-WC, one-game playoff idea. I hate it. This just exacerbates the existing problem (if one really believes the existing format IS a problem, which I'm not sure is true). What if the worse of the two teams gets lucky in that one game? Now you have the fifth best team in the league possibly winning the WS after a long 162-game season. Please, no more teams in the post-season. The existing WC format is fine if they would take away one of the home games for the WC team. Not only would it make an upset less likely, it also would financially reward the best team with the possibility of an extra home game.
