    And thank goodness for good news but it feels like a stay of execution. Given a choice between signing Meche and Marquis, all other things being equal and if someone put a gun to my head to make me decide, I'd ... I'd ... well, I'd take .. ok, just pull the damn trigger and put me out of my misery.

    It's quite obvious to those paying attention. But it's still something that needs to be plainly written out. There's still a large contingent bewildered about Pierre not returning. Many people think the Cubs problem is a lack of small ball and poor defense. It's not saying a lot, but it appears to be an answer to a chat question, and it's a 100% accurate statement. I agree. I liked Neyer's answer; it said a lot by saying a little. By making a point to not acknowledge the details in the question, he's saying look, let's not miss the forest for the trees. I didn't get that at all. I saw someone ask, "why do bananas ripen?" and the answer was, "bananas are yellow". Neyer's answer might have been glib but the first words of the question were: "Are the Cubs subject to a GM who is ..." Neyer basically said never mind all that - the Cubs are subject to yellow bananas. Besides, how could Neyer realistically address the q anyway without hopelessly conjecturing like the rest of us?

    Absolutely agree - well said. I like Albert but he's wrong on this one. Howard led his team to a better record in a tougher division. The playoffs or WS shouldn't be a factor in the MVP decision.

    Completely agree. I hope Hendry is planning on trading for a real CF (Wells plz) because moving Soriano or Jones there will cost the Cubs a couple of games in the final standings.

    This would definitely help. Did anyone see 'Sosa Uncensored' last night? Incredibly obnoxious. The language gap is often used as a cheap excuse for his weak congressional testimony - I don't buy it for a minute. As long as he's asked questions he wants to answer, he's perfectly cogent and his accent is perfectly understandable.

    Lugo is only 30? Wow, thought he was mid-30's. I'd love for the Cubs to get him, especially if he brings his DRay game with him: 871 OPS in 322 PA before he was traded to LA? :shock:

    Exactly - I agree 100%. I don't need to wait to see what else Hendry has in the works to come out and say I hate this deal.

    I've heard this assertion made before and I don't get it. The issue isn't that Fonzie leads off the game or gets more AB's; rather, it's that he follows the low-OBP 7-8-9 slots in the lineup so his RBI potential is wasted.

    I'll be very pleasantly surprised if Sweet Lou talks Fonzie into dropping into a power slot instead of batting leadoff. But considering that this is a guy who literally refused to take the field in spring training because he didn't want to play LF, I'm not getting my hopes up. All indications are that the Cubs will, as always (except for 1/2 year of Kenny), have a leadoff batter w/no plate discipline. Edit to add: wow, well there ya go. According to Hendry, batting leadoff was written into Soriano's contract. :shock:

    It looks like JJ might be on the trading block. I love Hoops' idea of spinning Jones + pitching to SD for Giles. But I'm assuming Drew is out of the picture now. I feel like the spoiled kid who wanted a bicycle (Drew) for Christmas but got a warm (and expensive) sweater instead.

    I still see plenty of room to make moves. If little else happens, I'll hate this contract. But I see more coming. If Hendry can somehow swing a trade for an OBP machine who will be in the everyday lineup, it'll ease the sting of this bad contract. Sor does provide some SLG which will be nice, but with him batting first we won't even make the most of that punch.

    Does spending $17 million on Soriano mean the Cubs will win a WS though? I'm sorry, I'm just having trouble leting this go. It brings them closer, yes. But it's a pretty far cry from a sure thing that they would even make the playoffs with this team. More needs to be done. Okay, I'll stop now. Obviously more needs to be done. If this was it, and there was no room for anything else, then it's a terrible signing. But that doesn't seem to be the case. This is exactly why it is a terrible signing. More needs to be done, it seems we all agree, but now we have far less payroll flexibility for 2007 and beyond. Sor's money would have bought Drew *and* most of a Meche or Lilly contract. I would be shocked if Hendry didn't think he was done with the offense (save for signing a Lugo, maybe) and turn 100% of his attention to pitching.

    Soriano and Jacque Jones are not similar players. Soriano is more similar to Aramis Ramirez than Jones. Soriano is not ideal. And he's a risky signing. But he's not just a faster Jones with a little more pop. Career numbers, yes more similar to ARam, but looking at OPS last three years (even including Sor's career year last year): JJ 777, AS 847, ARam 930. I exaggerated slightly calling him JJ with a little more pop. Sor is a decent ballplayer, but he IS similar to JJ in many respects. He gets on base at almost exactly the same rate as JJ, identical walk rate, much higher K rate and like JJ he's a butcher in the OF and also on the wrong side of 30. This signing utterly sucks no matter how you slice it.

    Largely, but there are a few holding out positivity. A few of us (me, jjgman, XZero, ConstableRabbit and a few others) are holding to the "hate the money, love the move anyway" opinion. co-sign First time since Hawk in 87' that we have signed one of the three or four best available FAs. I just hope Jim saves some cash for midseason deals - we are going to need pitching, IMO. I just don't see why people can't see that the numbers say this is a bad signing. Saying we signed one of the best FAs out there is like saying that the Bulls got one of the best 3-4 players in the 2000 draft when they got Marcus Fizer, meaning, its true but its a weak crop of players. The fact that we gave him one of the top 6-7 highest paid contracts in history makes me worry. That said, I am happy that they did something. Certainly this is better then nothing..but personally there were about 2-3 other FAs I would have spent my money on first. Completely agree. As I said about .. er, 50 pages ago, Soriano is so overrated it's not funny. He's basically a slightly faster version Jock with a little more pop - a measly 0.049 SLG and 14 OPS+ points. The JJ 3/16 deal looks like a bargain right now by comparison.

    Soriano is yesterday's news, we have better things to talk about right now. Agreed. Hey everyone, I got engaged to a White Sox fan this weekend. True story! I fully expect to be B&. Congrats man - welcome to the club. Just remember, ladies' underwear just keeps getting bigger and better once you're married. But you and your wife will always have 2005 and 2006 to compare and contrast (geez I need another drink)

    So I'm reading MLB headlines and I see the Rangers signed Catalanotto for 3/13... and I'm thinking how much happier I'd be if the 'Cubs' and 'Rangers' big headlines were reversed right now :(
