  1. Reminds me of this classic (not a RickRoll, promise): http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4902431363133734640&q=glenallen+hill&total=5&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0
  2. If stat-oriented books are in your radar, I'd recommend: http://www.amazon.com/Curve-Ball-Baseball-Statistics-Chance/dp/038700193X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1197229757&sr=8-2 http://www.amazon.com/Book-Playing-Percentages-Baseball/dp/1597971294/ref=pd_sim_b_title_3 http://www.amazon.com/Book-Landmark-Inquiry-Strategies-Actually/dp/0312332645/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1197229803&sr=8-1
  3. LOL - substantial, in-depth analysis at its best. He may as well have typed this: Ah but if you pressed me for one, how bout that I dress like a high school sophomore, have the haircut of a high school sophomore, but unlike Cuban I have the bank account of a high school sophomore. Yes, of course I'm bitter and petty.
  4. Yeah, I'm having Crime Dog flashbacks. I haven't read all of the Fukudome threads so I might have missed this, but is anyone here speculating on what Jim's next move is if Fukudome turns him down? Eggs in one basket seems to be the metaphor of choice, but surely there's some plan behind "Plan A: sign the Japanese star", right?
  5. I can hear the bleacher chant now: *expletive deleted* -- YOU -- DO-ME! *expletive deleted* -- YOU -- DO-ME! I have a bad feeling about the late arrival - they usually are the highest bidder in just about any market.
  6. > The six-foot, 170-pounder This guy sounds a lot like Juan Cruz. On paper it seems like a good trade, but the Cubs trading pitchers with Atlanta makes me cringe.
  7. For me Jenkins will always be the guy who, as a rookie, sent a hooking drive pretty much right at one Brant Brown in late Sept '98, E7, 3-runs plated -- including our old friend Jeromy Burnitz with the game winner. "oh noooo! noooooo!!" Edit: I do like the Soapdrop-you-dome idea now, with Abreu out of the picture.
  8. Negative = Me, KC, Jon, TT, Navin, CubsinNY, Rob (might have missed a few) Positive= Everyone else You missed me. I may have been more negative on the Soriano signing than anyone here. Can't find the link, but I remember stating that it would land on the short list of the worst contracts in the history of sports. Too bad search is still disabled. I complained about that contract so much I got sick of my own bitching. I found this on page 17 of the signing thread: viewtopic.php?t=36777&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=240 frost, I hated the contract too - I was right behind you a few posts down: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A five-year deal will be bad enough, but if it's eight years?? I just threw up in my mouth a little. Face it, if Soriano's signed Drew's *not coming*. Hendry will think he's done as far as the offense goes, with an OF of Murt, Sor and Jones. Next he will sign Lilly or Meche and call it an offseason.
  9. Let's put it this way: the Cubs were swept by the team that was swept by the team that is on the verge of being swept by the Bosox. That said, anything can happen in a seven-game series. The Cubs would be no worse than 3-2 dogs vs Boston if they'd won the NL pennant.
  10. +1 This is the dumbest idea ever. The WS format is fine. If MLB wants to change anything, make the ASG an exhibition game again and give the team with the best record home field advantage at every stage of the playoffs, including the WS.
  11. I've always been a huge Abreu fan and I believe he would mash NL Central pitching, a very nice fit in the middle of the Cubs lineup. He'd be atop my wish list -- well, right behind the pipe dream called ARod. I fear he if does become a free agent the Cards will be more aggressive than the Cubs in the bidding - just a hunch.
  12. +1 I can't stand that punk. But wow he has good stuff tonight
  13. How can we work facial hair into the metric? Is it an intangible tangible or a tangible intangible?
  14. Did you consult Dr. Evil when drafting this seriously over-complicated scenario? How about you simply sign A-Rod be done? Ahh, yes. If only "simply signing ARod" would magically create a leadoff hitter for the club, I would be all for it. This reminds me a little of the Steve Martin skit where he describes how to get rich. He plays up the question for a few moments, builds anticipation, then finally drops the bombshell: "firstfindamilliondollars AND THEN ... " Signing A-Rod is finding the million dollars. Figuring out who bats leadoff really isn't much a problem at that point.
  15. You had me at "Sign A-Rod." For SS, RF, short center - wherever. I'm sure he can play SS again. Nothing else compares in terms of the options available to improve the Cubs (and obviously that option -- signing A-Rod -- is dubious at best).
  16. Pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter. +1 Well said haltz. Side note: it's really disturbing how much criticism Piniella is getting for pulling Z after 85 pitches. It's ridiculous 20/20 hindsight logic.
  17. Very nice summary - what are the main doubts behind Jones? I know he had a terrible year but is he hurt? His BABIP is about 30 points below average - he'd have numbers on par with his career average if his BABIP were 30 pts higher.
  18. Maridiotti has been saying $400 million in his Sun Times columns lately -- inflation I guess. I honestly don't think he could write a single sentence about the Cubs without using the words or phrases: "Cubdom", "Tribsters", "$300/$400 million", "99 years", "Bartman", "goat", "jinx", or "curse".
  19. I really hated those signs, not only because the phrase itself is dumb but also because that [expletive] wingnut who jumped Randy Myers in '95 spearheaded and profited from the campaign. The Rockies' "It Could Happen" seemed a lot more realistic & less presumptuous.
  20. *urp* yeah, we got them dbacks right where we want em *swigs Guinness*
  21. He is... ...the most interesting man in the world. I got a good laugh out of this  stay thirsty my friends
  22. I know Soto didn't have great wheels but I think he finally did cross home plate
  23. +1 Smack talk from Cub fans? We haven't done anything yet. Cards fans can take solace by turning off the playoffs and watching their 2006 DVD again. White Sox fans have a similar DVD with a happy ending from the year before.
