Of course he has the final say, but my point is that if Piniella delegates bullpen decisions to his pitching coach moreso than most managers, and I've read plenty to suggest that's true, then shouldn't Rothschild bear some of the blame for abusive usage patterns? Part of the reason I ask is because I recall Rothschild coming under fire years ago (albeit in the blogosphere & misc sports commentary) for being partially culpable for Dusty's pitcher abuse. The counterargument then was that Dusty never ceded much control to Rothschild and didn't consult with him or rely on him to monitor pitchers' health as much as he should have. This came as some relief to those who were worried when Piniella hired Rothschild, if Rothschild really wasn't to blame at all for the PAPs racked up during the Dusty years. Just was curious more than anything why no one even mentions Rothschild being complicit, at least, in Marmol's abuse, and I tend to agree with everyone his usage pattern has been terrible this year.
