  1. In many ways, 1998 set the standard for modern Cub fandom. 1998 was the first grand Cubs tale to be told in the Internet era. Much of what we take for granted now really had its coming of age then — gamecasts, web radio broadcasts and message boards like this one were put to the test by the Cubs community for the first time. That stuff had been around for a little while, but there wasn't much urgency attached to keeping up with the sleepy 1996 and 1997 teams. Writing that post made me feel about 50 years older.
  2. If I remember correctly, Beck came into that game with absolutely nothing left in the tank. He had no velocity whatsoever. I believe he got Carter to pop out on an inside pitch that barely broke 70 mph. I remember watching that game with my dad partly because, being a Dodgers fan and avid Bonds-hater, he was actually pulling for the Cubs that day. But I remember Dead-Arm Beck coming in and his fastball was barely topping 80 but he got the job done anyway. I need to pull out that tape. I recall Joe Morgan calling for Riggleman's head for using Mulholland and Beck. I'd love to get ahold of one of those paintings of that night's scene - bunting all around, Harrygoblin floating into the mists ...
  3. If it weren't for the late season injury to Flash Gordon I think they would have likely made the playoffs that year. Seems hilarious now, but I recall the elation I felt knowing that we had locked up the division with the McGriff trade. I recall a decisive beatdown on the Cardinals that very weekend that further cemented the notion. The thing I didn't like about that trade was they were replacing one of the three productive bats in the lineup with a guy who was just a little more productive. It's not like they plugged a whole. Stairs was hitting, unlike a lot of the other guys. In retrospect, that deal was stupid on many levels. I think having Fred around may have jacked with the team's chemistry, especially in light of all the time he wasted hanging around Tampa before joining the ballclub. It's like he was happy to rot away down there; unfortunately, he in the end decided to come rot away with us. The choke job that was 2001 is largely lost in memory due to the 9/11 tragedy. The season, while not as bad as 2004, has to rank among the great Cub collapses.

  5. I still can't believe more hasn't been made of that. The Braves fanbase is pretty docile.
  6. Nice of Thom to point out the obvious in the face of McCarver's idiocy. Baker has yet to put together a competent season in Chicago.
  7. It was said at the time that Sandberg quit in '94 to tend to those "family matters," and in turn also trashed his 1995. It's a shame that his career was interrupted for that piece of trash.
  8. Check your PMs.
  9. Time to win one for the Boss.
  10. Good man.
  11. Wow, the one time the veteran makes sense... Now Guzman has to deal with O'Malley AND Miller taking away his starts and innings. His starts and innings?
  12. Sorry but some people like the alternatives. I think the pinstripes look ugly IMO. Plus Zambrano likes the dark blue shirts and he is awesome. Trust me Zambrano knows what he's talking about. Bow to the blue! That's Zambrano's lone flaw — he makes the whole team wear beer league duds when he pitches.
  13. This is a tragedy.
  14. (1) Keep the names off. (2) Find every last alternate jersey in existance and start the world's biggest polyester-fueled bonfire. The blues look ridiculous.
  15. First the Sox win some games, and now this. Horrible.
  16. The thought occurred to me as I walked out of Wrigley on 10/3/03 - "what if this is as good as it will get with Prior?" I shrugged it off as typical Cub fan fatalism, and never took it seriously until now. This sucks.
  17. Same as ... The Metallica party The AC/DC party The Pantera party ... and on and on.
  18. Gibson, Jack Morris and Bream: the fathers of dramatics at the dawn of my interest in the game. Joe Carter doesn't even register.
  19. No matter what Baker does, there's always someone at the ready to defend the indefensible. It's astounding.
  20. Metallica, easy. I buy Beatles stuff for my wife. Personally, I liked McCartney better in Wings.
