That was the point - if no one was around, the act would have no ceremonial value. This is typically done after the last game at a park, the earliest example I'm aware of being the Crosley Field plate that was moved to Riverfront Stadium in 1970. It didn't really have any ceremonial value anyways. There was no announcement from what I can tell. Nobody was posing with the shovel, I didn't see any photogrphers around or anything. From what I saw, they just gathered around with a shovel and started digging. Did you miss the picture? In a normal situation (no playoffs) there would be an announcement and whatnot.
