    FSU probably should have gotten in based on merit to that point. The only thing the new system has in place that is better than the old is the conference champions get in. But we all know FSU would have gotten destroyed by any of the other three teams.

    As Counsell and the Boss have said, you have to prove it all night. Caissie has proven 1) he's got a super quick bat. 2) strikeouts are a big part of his game. I see more Dave Kingman than I do Aaron Judge. Not bad, but certainly not a star. That said, the Cubs desperately need slugging and Caissie provides that. The Shaw/Happ comparison doesn't hold for me. I think if Happ hit only lefthanded he'd have more power numbers. I think Shaw has much better bat-to-ball skills, but he's closer to Nico than Happ as a hitter profile. Anyway, it's a good time to be a prospect watcher and Cubs fan. We all remember the Tyler Colvin and Dunedin express hitter of the Hendry years.

    Besides the WAR argument, Judge might win the triple crown. I know old-timey numbers and all, but it's rare, special, and valuable. Miggy did it in 2012 and before that, it was 1967.

    Pittsburgh is one of my favorite cities and PNC is one of my favorite parks. I feel bad for Pirate fans. They deserve better. At least the pitching is looking up. Best thing for them would be for the owner to sell.

    I'm still not clear if it was lat injury or a shoulder injury. I was a big believer before the injury, but they treated him with the kindest of kid gloves and not even one full season of good health.

    Obviously, opinions differ, but I have a hard time putting Horton even in the top three after the injury. He pitched 53 innings in college and couldn't stay healthy. I fear his ultimate position is high-leverage relief. he may be great at it though.

    The point that Boog was making, and I was observing is that trades are made on a star/prospect (buy/sell) basis when they could be made on just swapping two to good players from teams who have needs in different areas, and those trades are not made. Boog said that teams are getting caught up in cheap labor markets that never materialize because the cheap labor doesn't produce. Without casting too big a net, people seem to be happy with that as long as the payer is "cost controlled". Cost controlled doesn't mean a damn thing when it's hampering the team's ability to win. Now I know the argument is that having cost controlled players enables a team to spend more money on a star or established player. That's fine, but the name of the game is winning not efficiency. The Cubs are caught on the wrong side of both ledgers and are in a bad position unless they get creative.

    Call me a traditionalist or whatever but I don't like the new playoff system at all. College football doesn't need it and its dumb. I would like it better if the money were used to support academic scholarships at regional state universities, but that's not what will happen. Every year for as long as this lasts there will be the same 15 teams fighting for 12 spots with the same 10 in every year. The Auburns, PSUs, UCLAs, etc will be in on a rotating basis and ND will get in by losing two games to the top 10 teams and beating up the service academies (exaggeration for effect).

    On the flip side who are they going to trade for? The Cubs are cemented in mediocrity for the time being. Best they can hope for is that Bellinger opts out. They have cheap and useful players at the corners. Amaya is starting to hit. Happ and Swanson aren’t getting moved. Seiya is the best slugger. PCA may become a difference maker. That leave Nico as the most likely trade choice. They need pitching but so does every other team. Jed built a mid 80s win juggernaut unless they show more creativity than they’ve ever shown.
