    They want to reallocate the money toward pitching for reasons (they think their league average or slightly below offense is good). Who is to say the wind blowing in isn't the new normal with climate change? But I get it. The problem for Jed is that Bellinger will likely not have a market until Soto signs. So, by the time he's moved the pitching they are looking for may not be available in a trade or free agency. Jed 3D chessed himself into a nice box.

    One wonders how much money is enough? I suppose if you divide $30M -$50M in annual profit five ways it doesn't seem like a lot of money per kid. Then again, all they are doing is sitting on their asses and collecting coin.

    If they trade Belli it will probably be paying down his contract to get someone of value. So it will be Blli + money. They aren't going to save his entire salary and get anyone who can help the MLB team.

    That's not writing off the offseason, it's an assessment based on past performance which is the best predictor of future performance.

    You do this all the time. Who is writing off the offseason? We can go round and round but all reports indicate they are not shopping on the top shelf for anything either via trade or free agency (not a lot on the top shelf there anyway). This is the lament vs whining argument.

    Among the panoply of mediocrity that defines Jed Hoyer's time as the CBO of the Cubs this move doesn't even register a shrug. Goony is exactly correct. Jed will run an 80ish win team with room for a trade deadline deal if things break well for the Cubs. That's what he does and who he is.

    He signed Bellinger to that contract that he now wants to be rid of because Bellinger didn't opt out. That's pretty short-sighted.
