What's the reason Trib continues to honor Rusty's contract?

We have a winner folks, although I think for reasons 2 and 3 more than 1. -
The loosing streaks had very little to do with pitching and much more to do with the inconsistent offense. In loosing streaks of over 5 games the Cubs have averaged a paltry 2.59 runs per game. The offense hurt, no doubt. I just thought going into the year that with three stoppers in the starting rotation we'd avoid bad streaks. Of course, the three stoppers were only in the starting rotation at the same time for about a week. Not too mention the only thing Prior was able to stop this year was a ball hit up the middle. IMO, shoring up the pitching staff needs to be addressed above all else. The offense would've been much more successful this year if someone had fielded sensible lineups. Patterson and Perez wearing different uniforms next year should help. I'm not quite sure how shoring up the pitching staff will help the Cubs to score more than 2 and half runs per game unless you are advocating for the Cubs to trade for Willis and Hampton. They could bat them seventh as McKeon has done for Willis lately.

That doesn't sound like Sammy at all. To me he sounds like a frustrated player who is dealing with a disapointing end of the season. I wouldn't read too much into the quotes.

Let's just assume that there weren't 67 players in baseball who had more runners on during their at bats... If Lee could score his current .1617 RBI per runner and had seen as many runners as... ...Matsui, he'd have 126 RBI. ...David Otiz, he'd have 123 RBI. ...Pujols, he'd have 114 RBI. ...Brian Giles, he'd have 114 RBI... Instead he has his current 105 RBI, and earlier in the season he was destroying the ball without anyone on base for him. Mid-season estimates had him with a chance at 100 RBI by the break if he'd had an above average # of runners on base. Of course it hasn't helped him that he's only had 46 AB with RISP since the break. Lee only has 33 RBI post All Star Break, and only 15 have been by other than HRs. He has not hit well with RISP for 2 months. On an amazing XBH side note, which player is tied for 5th in doubles post ASB? Neifi Perez with 20. Wow! Really nice analysis! Great post.

B/c this year's numbers are so far out of line of his past numbers. This year he got off to an incredible start and has faded toward the end. Normally he starts off poor and then heats up. Be that as it may, he is 30 and at his peak but for him to have another season like this year would be remarkable. As I originally stated, he still is a top 5 1st baseman even at his career norms. There is no guarantee that any of the young players would be superstars, but I don't reacall anyone stating that they would. Maybe I need to re-read the thread. And as I stated above, I don't think the D-backs would make the deal. Nevertheless, it is fun to talk about it.

OK, I see. So you will take another near .500 season so you can watch Lee maybe almost win the triple crown. Not me dude. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Yes I do, which is why I said I would be singing Hendry's praise. But you never know, this is baseball. There is a sucker born every minute.

Of course that would be better. But trading Lee for multiple younger and cheaper players is a better option than overpaying overrated players to try and make a run. If you can trade Lee and get a huge upgrade at another position and a slight downgrade at 1B, then spend the extra money for another huge upgrade, then the Cubs will be a better team. In the proposed deal, the Cubs get a pretty substantial upgrade at SP (Webb), a slight downgrade at 1B (Tracy, assuming Lee reverts somewhat to past trends), and a great prospect. If you can use the extra money to get Brian Giles over a player like Jacque Jones, then the team is better for it. Still, I would rather keep Lee and find other ways to add these players or similar. Why would Giles come to Chicago after they traded away a guy coming off an MVP season for a #3 starter, a 1b whose had one good season, and a kid?? Giles probably wants to win now. Not in 2009. Because the Cubs have filled three holes at the cost of one player? Thus having the wearwithall to sign Giles plus some others. And one more thing, exactly how good were the Cubs this year while Lee had his career year?

He's exactly the type of guy that Boston or NY could fight for. He could be great, he could miss half his starts. A pitching starved team with loads of cash should strongly consider taking the chance on him, especially when they already have a great offense. An offensively challenged team with lots of arms should probably spend their money elsewhere. It should be interesting watching them battle for him indeed. When does Brown come off the books for the Yanks...not that it matters? I still think Brown would have been a great closer. This year, I believe.

Bold Prediciton If the Cubs sign Lofton, next season there will be more topics on his suckitude then on Corey's suckitide this season. The past is the past, 2003 will never return. Besides hindsight is not 20/20 here. The Cubs offense was no better after he came then before he came. Don't beleive me? You can look it up! -
some people are pretty high on milton bradley & being suspended for disciplinary reasons is only one of several negative incidents on his resume. i certainly hope they stay away from guys like these and pursue other options. all the cubs need now is another albert belle type pycho. Ok that is just plain foolish. Cabrera is a top five baseball player and is under 26. There are few if any position players I would rather have than him. He has been a chior boy since coming up to the bigs at the ripe old age of 19.

why new york or boston? i think we have a decent shot with the money we have to spend. I don't think the Cubs will offer him the money he is looking for. I also think Boston and NY are more in need of starting pitching. Boston first, NY second. But I also am basing my claim on my own beliefs and hopes and not on anything I've read so I could be way, way, off base here. I truely hope the Cubs target the pathetic offense and not pitching. They have a number of relatively cheap alternatives they can use for the 5th spot. While the offense is filled with holes.

It seems like everyone is infatuated with the the radar gun these days. The old adage location, location, location is so true. Location is much more important than velocity. If Sean continues to put up good numbers in AA next year, I wonder how the scouts will find a way to knock him. -

I don't think Lee has magically become a great player. I'd expect that he will regress toward his career norms next year. However, he is still a top five first baseman. On the other hand, if Hendry can get back Tracy, Web, and Quentin for Lee and a couple of throw ins. I'd be singing his praises.

[Off Topip] I wish the Cubs had the stable of young position players that the d-rays have. I watched a bit of the game yesterday. Gomes almost hit for the cycle, Huff had a mamoth HR. Man, they are loaded with young talent. If they could get any pitching they could be a force in a few years.[/Off Topic] I could see Sosa in Tampa if he would take a 15 million dollar pay cut next year.

That's cool, Ryan better have started his recruiting. Meh. I think that's overpaying. If this report is true, it sounds like the Cubs are going to improve their defense at the expense of their already bad offense. The Cubs aren't going to go far with that strategy. And I really don't want an OF of Jacque Jones, Craig Monroe and some CF. Oh, I would like a Bob Howry-signing. I will be very surprised if they don't resign Walker. If the story is true here is a future DL list for the Cubs Nomar Wood Burnett Rodriguez If true the Cubs get older and worse. I can handle getting worse if it means getting younger (light at the end of the tunnel), but getting worse and older at the same time is too much for me to take. -

That's not much of an argument, IMO. Do you really believe those three guys would have been difference makers on this team? Farns is an overgrown frat boy who cannot be counted on. Merker acted like an unprofessional baby last year w/ his stupid and insubordinate attacks on Stone. And do I really have to show you Sosa's stats? Please show me the evidence you have that Hendry was responsible for getting rid of Stone. And Dusty earned the right to fail last year and a second chance this year b/c he got a recently horrendous team within 5 outs of the WS. However, I agree that his time has now come. Sorry for not being more clear. Hendry got rid of those people becuase they were percieved to be trouble makers. Both Merker and Farnsworth have been good bullpen arms that the Cubs could have used this year. But that is largely beside my point. My point is that Hendry cleared the way for Dusty this year. This year was the make or break year for Dusty. And to paraphrase JC, in Dusty the Cubs busted. And Hendry is responsible for Dusty.

I have to agree with goony. In additon, I'd like to say that one cannot criticize Baker without also tacitly criticizing Hendry. Hendry got rid of Sosa. He got rid of Fransworth. He got rid of Merker. He got rid of Stone. He has done everything except get rid of Baker.
