    No, but the fact it would pretty much clinch the division for them is reason to sign him. (Assuming my previous exception of Ramirez, Abreu or Dunn playing in the OF for the Cubs, Giles to the Cards cements them as the best team in the NL, if not baseball) I don't know about that, but they would be one helluva offensive force in the NL. I'm still waiting for the Cards pitching to come back to earth. It looks like I'm wrong but I don't fear that staff.

    Right! The first step in solving a problem is realzing you have a problem. I don't know if the Cubs have made that step although Baker and Hendry have at least discussed it. I could see a line up: Furcal SS Cedeno 2nd Lee 1st Rameriz 3rd Floyd Rf Wilson CF Barrett C Murton LF Likely, a little better than this year, but I don't think it is a playoff calibur everyday line up.

    That's what I've heard as well. Most of the people who I know that played minor league ball all said it was the hardest, most didn't make it out of AA. However, a couple of guys who pitched and made it to AAA said the bigest jump was from AA to AAA.

    I think it will matter more to the fans then to the organization. It will be fodder for internet message boards. The media will ask stupid questions and the Hendry and Dusty will give some innocuous comments. That will be the extent to of it.

    Kelly is still in the front office as an advisor. Walker blames him for the knock on his defense among other things. Regardless, he has no say in who he would get traded to. I wasn't thinking well when I made that post. It was not clearly thought out. I am still wondering who the Cubs would want from the Yankees given that I guess that Walker would be traded for Hunter.

    Not much new news, but is there an opportunity for Hendry to insert himself as a middle man here? If he's so set in going another direction at 2B, what kind of interest would Minny have in Walker? What could the Cubs look for from NY or Minnesota? I've said it before, but I have a strange feeling that Soriano may be the Cubs 2B next year (not that it is what I'd do necessarily). Thoughts? Edit: because I'm dumb. The Cubs would trade Walker for whom (I'll take Mauer)? I would assume the Cubs would want someone from the Twins. In addition Walker already played for the Twins and hated Tom Kelly. I can't see him wanting to go back to Minn. He may like the Yankees though. But I don't know if the Yankees have anything the Cubs want.

    The same way guys like Piazza and Grace went really low. Scouting is an inexact science. Some would say it is not a science at all but an art. There was a good article about Pujols in last week's ESPN the magizine. He was a little pudgy comming out of junior college and I think he had a bad senior year. The article made it seem like he is an even better person than a ball player. It is hard not to like the guy. In all of sports the worst I've ever seen is Dan Marino going in the fifth or six round. Marino went in the first round. It was just late in the first round. My memory was pretty bad there. I think he was like the fourth or fifth quarterback choosen that year. But there were a lot of good QBs in the draft, if my memory is still not bad

    Joe is postureing. I would think he would jump at the chance to manage. However, I would be a little leary of either Tampa or Miami. Tampa because of the new ownership group and Miami becuase they could be in Las Vages or somewhere else in a few years.

    Ditto. I would feel nervous in having him be our starting left fielder on opening day, but there should be an expectation that it is his job to win. Let me point out that I did like Dubois. I don't want people going back in the archives and showing my Dubois support posts. I did want Dubois starting, but it took me a while to come around on him as UK would attest. Call me crazy but I think last year would have been much different for Dubois if he didn't have to look over his shoulder every time he went to bat or played in the field. He never had chance in that platoon system. And neither would most rookies.

    Last time I checked we included me. Look, if anyone thinks things are just peachy keen on Addison and Clarke they are deluding themselves. Hendry has done a piss poor job this past year handling resources as determined by turning the rescources into talent. Because of that the Cubs performance was medicore at best as determined by wins. Sometimes people need a kick in the ass. There is no crying in baseball.

    Whatever. What this organization needs is an overhaul. 03 is long gone and was a fluke in the first place. Regarless this says you are wrong

    Exactly. And Diffusion, every GM whose team is not currently playing baseball would say exactly what Hendry has said. I give him no extra credit for being somewhat honest. What I would like to here is: "You know after a long time in this game I've come to the conclusion that I need to re-think some commonly held assumptions by Dusty, Gary, and myself. We need this organization, from instructional league to major league, to focus on the fundamentals,protecting outs, and becoming more patient at the plate. Our scouting department needs to begin to value production over tools. We need to draft better and then to do a better job of devloping players in our system. This includes looking to Latin America and the Pacific Rim. As a first step I've hired Leon Lee to be our director of scouting for the Pacific Rim. Finally, our pitching coaches need to focus on mechanics and throwing strikes. We will begin working on these things today. Next year there will be no excuse for the lack of fundamental play exhibited by our ball club."

    Tim and others. This "what if" game is a sucker's game. The fact is that the Cubs didn't stay healthy and that is all that matters. But I cannot prove my case and neither can anyone else prove the contrary. So it's all moot. I'd rather the Cubs not rely on the formula they used the past couple of years. But as long as they believe it was injuries that caused the problems I at least hope they do a better job fieldling a team that can consistently score runs.

    Steve Trascal was a terrible pitcher after he left Chicago. Hell, he was a terrible pitcher with Chicago. IIRC, the year after he left and went to the Mets he was sent down to AAA for almost 1/3 of the year. After that he came back and pitched well. But, IMO he can't hold Clement's jock strap. Besides, he was a first class A-hole the last year he wore the Cub pinstripes. If you think Walker's diareha mouth is bad, you should have heard Trascal's. He went on WGN radio and openly complained about the Cubs not offering him an extension, when he did nothing to deserve one. Screw the human rain delay. I use to fall asleep every time he pitched.

    Nothing against you dal or anyone but I don't think the Cubs make the playoffs even if everyone was healthy. For two years injuries have been a convienient excuse for Hendry and crew. It is BS and smelly BS at that. Every team has injuries. But more to the point, the injuries the Cubs suffered were very predictable (aside from Prior). Even so, the everyday line up this club fielded was not good enough to consistently score runs. That is why we saw the prolonged loosing streaks. In another thread I did some calculations and in loosing streaks of over three games the Cubs scored @ 2.5 runs/game. That isn't going to win a lot of ball games. And this is while Neifi and Lee were having career years. I think MacPhail, Hendry, Dusty, and a number of writiers and fans agree with your position. I however, do not. This Cub team was very medicore comming out of ST and they played that way the entire year. It is a shame b/c I think they will not change the formula one bit and produce similar results next year. I hope I'm wrong, of course.

    The Cubs cannot go through another season with Neifi as the starting SS. I wish they would resign Nomar. But I am betting that Neifi will be a Cubs uniform and starting somewhere on openining day.

    I think Cashman stays. Torree might retire, but I doubt it. I think Mel Stottlemier is gone. Steinbrenner is crazy but he is not stupid. Not for nothing, I would love if a Steinbrenner type owned the Cubs.
