  1. kind of but not really. The playoffs are not random. They are only tangentially related to the regular season due to the fact that the teams with the best records make the playoffs. But the teams that usually win the playoffs are the teams that are playing the best baseball at the time the playoffs start. That might not be the best regular-season team. I don't know how to make it so the best regular season teams have a better chance other than to limit the number of teams that make the playoffs and that isn't happening.
  2. That's a good point. He had a great spring, but he looked very out of shape. Going a few innings in ST while ramping up to the regular season can be deceiving. I expect that he's going to come to camp this year in better shape. I expect that he's going to have a better year than last year.
  3. those projections are not accurate to that degree and you know that. Anyway, who cares? We just have to wait and see what happens.
  4. How exactly did they exceed expectations?
  5. Pearl Jam are doing two shows at Wrigley next year. That’s Hader’s money if the want him.
  6. None of those guys are likely to be around long term, maybe Bieber, but he's just Kyle Hendricks in a different body, so to speak. If they are going to dig deep into the top of the farm I hope it's for better than Cleveland has to offer.
  7. Goony, Are you saying that the jury is still out on Fields? I'm not understanding your position.
  8. the reason is that they are using a risky approach. But bullpens are a somewhat risky part of the team. if we can praise them when it pays off we can admonish them when it doesn’t.
  9. Cubs signed an AAAA lefty who Carter Hawkins drafted or something in Cleveland a million years ago. party on.
  10. It's the Bears, I'd assume unless they lose out everyone in the Poles tree aside from the OC will be back. Depending on where they will draft Fields may be back as well. The wildcard, if you want to call it that is that Fields is not tied to Poles.
  11. If they are in on Boras clients they will need to be patient. It's the way he operates. Even if they have given their final offer, they have to wait and see. I suppose they don't necessarily have to wait, but if they don't they probably aren't getting the guy. Boras seems to like the deadline negotiation strategy.
  12. Steele is a good pitcher who is going to give you innings and keep you in games most of the time. That is plenty valuable. I don't know anyone this side of a strawman who thinks Steele is destined for the HOF.
  13. The 7 stages of Cub fans offseason free agency 1 - Irrational exuberance- The Cubs have been linked to multiple big name free agents and reports are out that the Cubs are making a play and going to get their man 2- Giddy optimism. - Reports are that this time the Cubs are "all in" on player X 3 - Stoic realism - Other teams are making a bid and the Cubs are in the mix. It could come down to who makes the best offer 4 - Sticker shock - Reports are that the bidding is getting high 5 - Sour grapes - Team A really overpaid for player X. Aren't we all glad the Cubs didn't do that? 6 - Maudlin defeat - The Cubs will never sign another big-name player but the ones they did sign are kind of decent 7 - Spring training - If you squint hard enough, they have a chance.
  14. Bears, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory for 50 years.
  15. PCA is likely starting the season in Iowa regardless who the Cubs sign
  16. If they get Bellinger and Hoskins and add Beiber and a back end RP. I will consider it a good offseason
  17. Sometimes Fields does horsefeathers like that and makes you think he can do the job.
  18. My personal opinion is that they are getting too high on their assessment of the talent in the minors. They have depth but not height. They will need to roll 7’s and there will still be holes to fill. And we know they aren’t rolling 7’s.
  19. I took a family trip from Alabama to Michigan. We are staying in a hotel and I have a really hard time sleeping away from home (my bricks to carry). In my insomniac state I read as much as I could of direct quotes from Jed and Hawkins. If you take them at their word, and I think we should, they think the Cubs are on the brink of a breakout with the prospects they have in the high minors and also think they have cracked the code on developing pitchers. They apparently hired Consell to help shepherd in the young talent. I get the sense they are content to let the market pass them by and are looking for short term fixes. Which, ok I guess, but damn that’s frustrating. The direct line from Ricketts to Hawkins is clear. There is no daylight. There will be no hot seats handed out if the Cubs finish with a worse record next year as they continue to build the team the way the Ricketts want it built.
  20. You can feel any way you want.
  21. Between Santo and Aramis 3B is a black hole. They had Bill Madlock for a couple of years but he got uppity after winning the batting title so Wrigley sent him off.
