  1. Obviously Sonny Gray is much better than Hayden Simpson; even Tim Wilken would admit to that. I'd also take Anthony Rendon over Matt Purke. This is all academic if the Cubs keep winning though. That's not obvious. Simpson sounds plenty talented from what I've heard about his stuff. Gray is a very talented guy that I know we drafted before, but how many short righties in the first round can you take? I'd take Purke over Rendon.
  2. He's 24 , he can hit .300, he gets on base, and there's probably some room for him to hit for more power. There'd be 0 reason to complain unless we traded someone I actually like.
  3. http://media.nola.com/lsu_impact/photo/cws-tcu-first-baseballjpg-c9e4797dc81afa04_large.jpg or Die. I'd be cool with Sonny Gray, but we kind of just drafted him with this Simpson character. I'd rather take the Spawn of Price/Lee.
  4. They're Yankee fans. I have this same debate with them. Nice people but they say that because at some point this season the bullpen probably blew a game. He tends to know who's got the hot hand when there's injuries, which there are. When the bullpen is healthy everyone's got a pretty well defined role.
  5. Only speculation, but it sounds like Girardi is the favorite, followed by Gonzalez, with Sandberg coming in third. Girardi would be much worse than Sandberg for the simple fact that he will have 2 WS rings as a manager (likely) before he takes on the Cubs. He's flat out terrible in the same way Sandberg is, the only difference is he has had the best talent in baseball to overcome him. People (outside of us internet nerds) won't critique his work b/c, "he has two rings". Yuck, yuck, and more yuck. I never watch the yankees so I know little about Girardi as an in game manager now. but for all of this talk about world series rings I was much more impressed with him while with the marlins though. He seemed to make the right moves for the right situations, a no brainer yet something that Lou was really lost on. Plus he did quite a good job with a bunch of young kids many of which blossomed under his tutelage and after some tough love. It seems like these are some of the main things we want out of a manager. I watch Yankee games often and I don't think there's a better bullpen manager than Girardi. He seems to know how to handle pitchers. He's also very good at handling the press. He's probably not leaving the Yankees. Ben Cherington or Jed Hoyer at GM and Fredi Gonzalez at manager plz.
  6. He's the most underrated player on the team. Solid all around player who knows how to last...plus there's still upside. Trade Byrd, keep Kosuke unless a good offer is actually made.
  7. I like Dewitt. I think he'll be a good player for us. I'm not sure what I want to do with the offseason.
  8. Fredi Gonzalez ftw.
  9. What's the story on Reed? I have a good feeling about Szczur. His toolset sounds Carl Crawford-esque.
  10. Besides Golden, Wells, and Simpson is there anyone from this year's draft with intriguing upside? I don't buy Golden and don't know too much about Wells. He seems like a nice upside arm. Simpson has a little Roy Oswalt in him, and I like the pick. Purke or Rendon ftw in 2011.
  11. +1 He's got some decent attributes that could hold us over for a while...Probably won't get done.
  12. Sell high on Marmol to a contender.
  13. Cole, Gray, or Purke are the only acceptable ones as of 6/12/10. Purke is going to be really good.
  14. This draft has been pretty nice, to say the least. Harper's brother looks like he has a whole lot of upside.
  15. Does anyone else admire Dylan Covey's Curt Schilling-esque mechanics? There's some recoil, but otherwise I like most of what he does. That's my favorite HS arm.
  16. The Cubs rode Z hard when he was young, and he's a high effort guy. I really wish we could develop AND maintain an ace level starting pitcher...It'd really help this team stop the whole losing thing.
  17. I'm a little late, but Jaramillo imo is overrated. Perry was a good HC. Not sure I get this. At least we kept Von Joshua.
  18. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091106&content_id=7630222&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb Interesting names on the list: Mike Gonzalez Rafael Soriano Rocco Baldelli (kinda) Orlando Hudson Mike Cameron JJ Putz Brett Myers (used to like him, depends on how in shape he plans to be - so doubtful) Erik Bedard Brad Penny Hank Blalock (really depends) Austin Kearns (also really depends)
  19. I'd be down for a year of Cameron. Still a solid defender with a non-empty stat line.
  20. +1 He pretty much fits the typical profile of a Cubs move. Dude needs to grow back the beard too. I loathe clean shaven Johnny Damon for some reason.
  21. Steal. Wanted the Cubs to land Hermida for a couple offseasons now. The Red Sox get him, a former top prospect entering his prime, for a possible future LOOGY (or 2). Watch him have a beast season next year. Why don't we do things like this?
  22. ns: Stephen Drew Jeremy Hermida Orlando Hudson Brandon Wood Akinori Iwamura Bobby Crosby/Khalil Greene - If the first two SS's don't work...why not? Mike Cameron Rocco Baldelli Rich Harden Erik Bedard John Lackey Cliff Lee Ben Sheets Rafael Soriano Other good pen arms Carl Crawford
