    mid-market team and I think he is coming up on free agency after 2009. given the style of hitter that he is, san diego is not getting as much value out of him as they would from a hitter who doesn't have such strong fly ball tendencies. they have to make some decisions in the next few years on guys like kouzmanoff, gonzalez, meredith, young, maybe prior if he ends up having a good 2nd half. they're also losing some big contracts (maddux, edmonds, giles) and may decide that they can afford to give $10M a year to greene. but if they decide to go another way, they can show other teams his road splits as evidence of his considerable value.

    tony thomas is 2-2 with a walk so far. he's really raking to start the year. if the cubs have thrown in the towel on patterson, thomas could be the one to take over 2b after derosa's contract is up.

    mitch atkins has given up a run and three hits in two innings, but on the plus side, he has four K's. predictably, the tennessee offense has gone 9 up, 9 down.

    cedeno was so bad the first time, i think he'd be hard-pressed to "get" major league pitching. i will say, however, that the dusty regime - "it's called hitting, not walking" - probably did not do him any favors. cedeno doesn't seem to have great instincts at the plate; if dusty & co were just telling him to go up to the plate and hack away, that probably helped make him as bad as he was. maybe having a manager/hitting coach with some concept of how to approach a major league at bat would keep him from being completely miserable at the plate.

    And hopefully, someone will want to take Marquis and/or Dempster off our hands. Marshall & Gallagher are better options. marshall i agree. gallagher, i don't think he is quite ready yet.

    That's the worst a 23-year old Cedeno would give you. What's the worst a 25-year old Theriot would give you? Do you feel that if Theriot had played a full season at shortstop in 2005, that his numbers would have been worse than the numbers he put up in 2007? not really. he was polished in 2005; he probably would've given the same blah production that he gave last year. at this point i am just sort of hoping that theriot completely craps the bed for the next month and we can see what happens with cedeno.

    looks about right- that's an appalling offense. not a great offense, and yes they've been slumping, but batting average is a poor way to assess this. especially in oakland. and especially especially for jack cust.

    okay, so if we take out ronny cedeno's april 2006, he was at: .235/.259/.316 which is still significantly worse than theriot's non-july numbers of .250/.303/.319 last year. so i think we can safely say that the worst cedeno is worse than what theriot is likely to give you.

    there aren't that many. soriano's is bad, no question. Marquis' contract is terrible. Eyre and Blanco are also stupid, but those are expiring after this year. derosa's contract is a bargain (despite last offseason's hand-wringing, he'll probably have $13M of production in about a year and a half). Lee should give you at least $13M worth of production for at least the next 2 years. Ramirez will probably be overpaid by the end of his contract, but he's one of the better third basemen in the game. Lilly's contract isn't bad unless he tanks. Zambrano is probably overpaid, but given his reputation, I don't think most people around the game would perceive him as being overpaid. Kosuke looks good given the money right now; maybe by the end of his contract he won't be worth $13M, but that contract shouldn't be bad at all. Dempster's overpaid, but that one is coming off the books soon too. All in all, there are really only two significant contracts on this team that are really bad. Soriano's will hurt in the long run; Marquis will be done after 2009. I don't think the Cubs are in quite as dire a situation long-term as some people (hi frosty) make it sound.

    This is a pretty great post, TT. except that if you take out any player's best month, his numbers are likely to not look so hot. You didn't get it. please, enlighten me.

    i think i read in BP yesterday that LaPorta was playing RF to start the season. braun, hart, laporta would be a lousy-fielding outfield, but damn would you be getting a hell of a lot of offense to make up for it.

    plus, did people not pay any attention last year? soriano gets in stretches where he cannot hit a beach ball, and then will mash for a week.

    we need to fast forward to a month from now so that howry can be good. i like reliable the reliable 1-2-3 bob, not the early-season batting practice bob

    i think we should continue to try scoring more runs than the opposing team. if we can do that, we will win more baseball games.
