  1. I'm hoping so too. I know the whole team is slumping, but how long do you stick with him if he continues to hit like he is? A month? 2? pie has a buttload of talent. he can hopefully make adjustments based on that talent, but you have to give him time. hopefully if soriano stops sucking, soto keeps putting good swings on the ball and lee, aramis, fukudome, and derosa hit the way that one would expect. if they do, pie being mediocre would not be a killer. lol well played cubs
  2. gee wonder if that one's gonna come back and bite us in the ass
  3. too bad madlock is done, i was hoping to hear more of his analysis on "the big kid from colorado" and "what's his name, rightfielder for seattle"
  4. it just warms my heart to see a cub prospect come up and hit balls hard and show good plate discipline. might as well enjoy it since it only comes around every 20 years or so.
  5. i got him on my HACKING MASS team. i think he'll be decent - should get on base at an adequate clip - but he won't hit more than about 4 extra base hits all year, so his pathetic SLG should make for a very poor OPS. what on earth was that madlock? make it stop.
  6. yeah the cubs will also NOT score runs in bunches this year.
  7. that's how he goes though. he'll suck for two or three weeks, then have a week where he hits everything and puts up a 2.500 OPS. and in the end he'll have an OPS of .850 to .900 even though you feel like he only showed up for about 25 games.
  8. right now i'm really wishing my house-hunting had lasted a couple of hours longer, just so i wouldn't have to watch the cubs get shut down by a dog crap pitcher

  10. We really shouldn't be surprised. This is pretty much teh same lineup as last year except with Kosuke, so why would we expect it to suddenly start hitting now because he came? I mean he's hitting, but no one else is doing anything, which is typical. people hit for some of the other pitchers. there's a reason he only won 11 games, and it's not because he had a bad year or got hurt a lot
  11. i was kinda hoping that we were done with the whole "rich hill pitches pretty well, but nobody hits for the cubs and they lose a low-scoring game" thing last year, but apparently we're gonna keep it going right on into 2008
  12. i can't watch rich's first start of 2008 because i'm going to be out house hunting all afternoon #-o
  13. While I agree that the rotation could be an issue, I dont know how you get that from the first 3 games. Z and Demp both had very solid outings, and while Lilly was horrible, I doubt hed be the one replaced if it came to it. I would however go for a pitcher, as Marquis is sure to implode around that time regardless of how he does the first few months. I meant more or less that I think the offense will be fine. The end result (runs) wasn't there, but I saw enough from the guys I had questions about (Soto, Pie, Fukudome) to tell me we will be fine on offense. fukudome will be, at worst, like mark kotsay during his a's years. i'm not worried about him. soto has continued to show good patience and has homered once, also put a charge into a ball yesterday. he's going to strike out a lot - probably 100+ times this year - but as long as he keeps showing the power threat, pitchers are going to keep pitching him somewhat carefully, and he'll draw his share of walks. pie, i'm not sure that his first three games have been good. he's already struck out four times, hasn't walked, and one of his hits was a ground out that turned into a hit because gagne got off the mound too slow and/or fielder was too fat to run to first. his instincts at the plate are still pretty disturbing to me.
  14. burnett is pretty much the perfect rental, assuming that he opts out of his contract. frontline starter, no financial commitment beyond this year to a player who is a risk to hurt himself at any time. the danger is that he blows his elbow out in september and then you're on the hook for another $24M through 2010.
  15. meh, they're beating up on the as-usual terrible southeast division. their defense/goaltending isn't very good and while ovechkin is the best player in the league, IMO, his impact can be muted by a solid defensive defenseman and not taking too many penalties and putting the caps on the power play. who knows, washington could have the 3 seed and carolina could be out of the playoffs. both teams finish up with home games against yet another bad team, the florida panthers.
  16. he freaked out in 2000. i don't know of anyone who has milked one big year for more money than darin erstad. except maybe adrian beltre, but at least he's a decent player.
  17. i have 6, but ryan howard and ryan braun are on pace for a combined zero homers. I AM SUNK. in other news, i am not counting on anything from adam laroche until at least may.
  18. people say "a whopping 683 plate appearances" as though it's extremely uncommon for players to reach the majors having had fewer than this many plate appearances at the more advanced minor league levels. it's not. it's actually quite common. and he performed at a decent level in west tennessee in 2005 (it's a pitcher's league and a pitcher's park), beat up pitching in iowa during 2005, and played well for the big club in 2006. it was time to see if he would sink or swim in 2006; starting him out at iowa would have been pointless. in if ronny was "rushed" then i would guess you could say that most of the starting players in baseball were also "rushed."
