  1. bp disagrees. they did trade for dan haren and have a lot of young hitters who are likely to improve. i know they were lucky in terms of their pythag, but i'd expect them to be a better team this year.
  2. i don't know why people would actively dislike kevin love. he seems like a nice enough guy who plays the game hard and from what i've seen, doesn't talk trash.
  3. he's beating the **** out of padgett over the back on every entry pass It's absurd. I'm surprised they called that hack on WIlliams. He also travels quite a bit. This is what I have been saying all year, and getting murdered for it because I like Duke. You take away half of his foul shots and 2 or 3 shots a game for travels and his stats are not so impressive. methinx a duke fan should not complain about other teams getting favorable treatment from the refs
  4. i guess we have found out what padgett cannot do, that being play defense on a good big guy
  5. i don't think it's necessarily fair to say "we should've signed tejada and vlad, and not soriano" or whatever, just because that is 20/20 hindsight. we should've drafted pujols and gotten johan santana in the rule v draft too. there were a LOT of people on this board clamoring to sign j.d. drew and jason schmidt, and those contracts look terrible now. yes, one can say that hendry could've allocated his resources more effectively, but i don't think you can say "if he'd done this then he could've done "
  6. no kidding. i'm surprised he didn't put ernie banks, billy williams and ron santo on his list.
  7. does he still have that stupid facial hair? if so, i hope he gets chemo and it falls out so that i don't have to look at it any more. (kidding) (mostly)
  8. yeah, don't use weather.com. but anyway, i just looked at a couple of models (i was forecasting for middle east & asia this morning, so not really in touch w/the u.s. weather), and they suggest that chicago would be in the warm sector, to the south of the warm front. that's at least somewhat good news; the weather to the north of the warm front will be a chilly, steady rain that would pretty much guarantee a washout. to the south of the front, it would be more convective (showery) and there's at least a chance that the game could be played.
  9. the moral of the story on schmidt is, look at injury history and PAPs before falling in love.
  10. no, he is definitely below average. "average" would mean that the number of starting shortstops who are better than him is roughly equal to the number of starting shortstops who are worse than him. i suspect you'll be hard pressed to come up with more than 5 starting shortstops who are worse than theriot.
  11. I'm not remembering that one, what was it? Hendry was rumored to be going after both Lilly and Meche at the same time last offseason. When he lost out on Meche, he went for Marquis (as I remember it). i don't think it was that; i think it was either lilly or meche. remember, meche got a 5 year, $55M contract. marquis' contract - while ridiculous - is just 3 years, $21 million, a much smaller financial commitment. eaton's contract, given that he's always been below average and has had a lot of injury problems, was inexcusable.
  12. that's often what happens with new stadiums. extort the city into paying for it, then fall into mediocrity (see: Pittsburgh, Cincy, Seattle, San Francisco, Houston....) St. Louis, San Francisco, and Houston all have hosted World Series games. yes, but the new ballparks were built under the guise of "we can't maintain sustained success without a new park." but imagine if the pirates didn't have a really nice park? how many people would go out and see them lose 90 games a year in toilet known as three rivers stadium? they'd probably be out of business by now.
  13. i am... not doing quite as well.
  14. damn, i wish kevin love could jump. we might've gotten a "send it in, big fella!"
  15. lol, raftery.
  16. sweet, raftery time
  17. you should also be happy that they didn't switch to this game. your game is closer, and the second half has been completely unwatchable thanks to the refs.
  18. i think if you drive into the lane, you're automatically going to the free throw line. this is boring.
  19. oh don't you start calling it "goal" now, bilas. i was just nice to you.
  20. what happens if every player on both teams fouls out? and why does it seem like cbs' advertising plan for every march madness is to take five ads and bludgeon you to death with them?
  21. btw, regardless of who wins this game, if they don't play much, much better on saturday, they will get hammered by unc.
  22. on the other hand, i always wanted bilas to be a moron and a homer because he went to dook, but he's actually very good. kinda how i feel about troy aikman and moose johnston in football announcing; hated them when they played, but they're pretty good on the air.
  23. i HATE how dick enberg keeps calling baskets a "goal"
