  1. PECOTA projects fontenot to be more productive than cedeno offensively. Really? Damn. Are you sure it wasn't actually just Bill Pecota going bonkers? Well, still, it flies in the face of Lou's "playing the hot hand" BS. Outside of like 2 games, Cedeno easily has had the much "hotter hand." no. BP's site is down right now but i can look at their 2008 projections in the book. Ronny Cedeno: 278/326/422, .251 EqA, 13.3 VORP Fontenot: 282/357/431, .267 EqA, 15.4 VORP i know it might come as a shock since he's a small white guy, but fontenot has always been able to hit (291/362/437/799 minor league numbers). plus he doesn't have a disastrous full season under his belt at the major league level, so it's no surprise that PECOTA favors him. and lost in the forest of cedeno love/fontenot hate is the fact that fontenot has been productive when he's played this year (276/391/448)

  3. i just realized that kyler burke was white. at least i figured it out at this level; for whatever reason i assumed will ohman was black until i saw him pitch in a game for the big club.
  4. This is a good point. No sense in wasting a bench player when you have a good pinch runner in Marquis (and should he get hurt, it's no great loss). plus there is the outside chance that marquis will hurt himself. all in all, a lot of positives here.
  5. this doesn't make a lot of sense. they've already got something of a logjam with Bay, Nady and McLouth in the OF and McCutchen knocking on the door, with Pearce in the picture as well. i would unload Nady this summer and try to sell high on him. mccutchen wasn't hitting much last year and he's been pretty average this year; i think he should be in the minors for all of 2007. michaels can spot start for nady, who previously hasn't been a particularly good hitter against RHP, and Bay. before signing michaels, the pirates' fourth outfielder was nyjer morgan, who is lousy. it's not a bad move, if only for this year. and i guess pirates' management can keep pretending that they're trying to contend this year, too.
  6. i'm guessing that gallagher's stay in the rotation will last one more start, unless he is lights out or hill blows up in his next start at iowa.
  7. Honestly, I think Lou is likely more concerned with Pie's mentality than with how he'll fit in the lineup. If he goes out there and struggles badly - even if it doesn't have a huge impact on the offense - it'll hurt his confidence. Lou is likely trying to protect that. i understand the argument, but i think the confidence thing is overrated. mike schmidt didn't hit much his first year, and he turned out fine. dustin pedroia was awful for his first month with the red sox. i think that a lack of consistent playing time against major league pitching will be more harmful to his development then any loss in "confidence."
  8. water is wet. NBA PGs: Paul Williams rest of league isn't this writing off steve nash and tony parker a tad early?
  9. the cubs are #1 in baseball in runs scored, #3 in batting avg, #1 in obp, #5 in slugging, #2 in ops. if you're gonna break a guy into the lineup, having him surrounded by good players is a smart place to do it.
  10. Hardball Times tracks reliever levredge and win probability added, and it's not pretty. Wood is coming dangerously close to costing this team wins if he hasn't already done so. is this a good time to bring up the term "sample size"?
  11. time for the flyers to start making some tee times
  12. lol these refs are atrocious
  13. female reporter on versus to john, a pittsburgh boy with terminal cancer: "John, you're the envy of everyone of this arena right now." :x
  14. i'm wondering if travis hafner has completely lost it, or if he'll remember that he was a great hitter at some point this season.
  15. apparently when malkin goes to the net it's an automatic penalty, regardless of whether the defender plays him perfectly.
  16. Yes, Shawn F. Estes will start on Tuesday for the Padres. I believe he took the roster spot of Glendon Rusch too last week. man, that team sucks
  17. 7 save opportunities and 3 blown saves is not a success. And the BIGGEST game of Wood's career, one game short of a World Series, he lost. Not good. he also dominated the braves in two games of the first series, including a game five, which was the SECOND BIGGEST game of wood's career. good.
  18. veal sucked. 4.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 5 K. blech.
  19. they're both at fault. jones is being unprofessional by saying that he doesn't care about the fans - even if you don't, you have to at least pretend - and also by being consistently out of shape for a solid year and a half. writing the article, i don't fault simers for that. it's certainly newsworthy when a baseball player says he doesn't care what the fans think. however, it's completely unprofessional to call a player "tubbo" multiple times in your article. if you want to suggest that he's out of shape, fine, but resorting to name-calling is pathetic. and yes, i'm aware that i call prince fielder "fatty" on occasion. i hope i don't have to explain the difference between posting on a message board and writing for a prominent newspaper.
  20. So what, it's just ranking guys according to what PECOTA projects for them in the majors this year? That's a horrible way of ranking prospects. no, what's it's projecting overall in their career. it uses upside, which is defined as such:
  21. also locating his pitches better and keeping the ball down, those things are helpful.
  22. if they have something referring to "two in the pink, one in the stink" then you'll know it's intentional
  23. untrue. i agree with most of this. lou does a relatively good job as far as overall philosophy, but his in-game decisions are bad. he also needs to remember that the season is 162 games long, and you want your guys to not be completely out of gas in october.
  24. also would've been nice if sean could've thrown more.
