  1. on this one, i'll have to stick up for the cubs. when you get drafted by a team, you need to conform to their way of preparation and throwing between games. you can't just do what you've always done, or what your dad thinks is best. if you let pawelek do his own thing then you have to let everyone do their own thing, and you've got a system where there's no organizational philosophy. even if the cubs aren't doing it the way they should be - i don't know that i can fairly judge on this matter - they certainly have the right to coach guys in the way that they want.
  2. PECOTA disagrees, but yes - losing gallardo and having ned yost as a manager are two reasons that their record may not be as good as PECOTA would expect.
  3. braun doubles; the fat man can tie it with a homer
  4. i bet ryan franklin becomes a lights-out closer now
  5. bumping for no particular reason :-"
  6. personally i am happy that the cardinals are winning, but mildly annoyed that the rally was brought about by their usual parade of should-be-mediocre players.
  7. ryan ludwick looks like a guy who would play a local klan leader in a movie
  8. marmol in september: http://www.intriguing.com/mp/_pictures/grail/large/HolyGrail018.jpg
  9. The second in my "Lou continues to do something exceedingly stupid" series, Marmol pitched today with a five run lead. He pitched two innings in a game last weekend with a six run game, and is on pace to throw 102 innings out of the bullpen - which is way too much. if you want marmol to be useful in september and october - which is the ultimate goal of this team - then stop using marmol in a spot where any pitcher out of the bullpen will do. now sit back and enjoy as lou continues to do things in his stupid way.
  10. i'll take "lou piniella is a bad manager" for $200 please
  11. don't know, did he go home with a fat chick recently?
  12. i know, shocking that a good pitcher could have a good appearance in a baseball game
  13. this was a nice turn of events to wake up to
  14. the brewers have 6 picks in the top 62 of the draft. hopefully they do as great a job with their extra picks as we did in 2002.
  15. very unlikely. the list of pitchers who have pitched well their first year removed from TJS is a very short one. most guys struggle with their command their first year back - see kerry wood or, more recently, francisco liriano. add in the fact that guzman never was established as a major league pitcher before the injury and it's a huge long shot that he'll be a contributor to the 2008 cubs. maybe next year, if he can ever stay healthy.
  16. so randy johnson has been better against dempster than most of his teammates. coolio.
  17. good luck keeping that 0.73 ERA with a 16/11 K/BB ratio, reynel.
  18. what's so ridiculous about it? the presence of a guy like joe dillon? i guess i can understand it; the guy completely destroyed minor league pitching in 2004, 2005 and 2007 (in 2006 he was in japan), so it's reasonable to think that a guy who has been putting up an OPS over 1.000 and an EqA over .300 in the minors would be a productive player at the big league level. It's not PECOTA's fault that he won't get a shot to play in the big leagues. i do think that PECOTA's projections for Marte are overly optimistic.
  19. ok we can all agree that range factor is not a good defensive stat (and i was actually kinda surprised that the author of that BP piece used it) but the main point is that whether you actually watch the game or use defensive metrics, pie is vastly superior to johnson when it comes to defense. johnson shouldn't be playing unless he offers a significant advantage over pie on offense, which is only the case when a LHP is starting for the other team.
  20. scoring wasn't the whole problem - you give up 4 goals and most of the time you're going to lose. biron was average at best, too. the pens really just have more talent on the ice, especially with gagne and timonen missing the series, and unless biron stands on his head the series isn't going to last more than 5 or 6 games.
  21. In a roto league, here is how the commissioner of our league set up the scoring: Hits Allowed (H) -1 Earned Runs (ER) -2 Wins (W) 10 Saves (SV) 5 Shutouts (SO) 5 Complete Games (CG) 5 Walks Issued (BB) -1 Strikeouts (K) 1 Losses (L) -5 The fact that hits, walks and earned runs are each penalized while strikeouts are only rewarded with one point makes most starting pitchers a disaster: Roy Halladay is 3-4 with a 3.29 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. He has -26 points. I dropped him for a relief pitcher. Aaron Harang is 1-5, but has a 3.09 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. He has -67 points. I just dropped him for Justin Duchscherer, who qualifies as a starter and reliever, so I am putting him in a starter spot. My pitching staff now consists of: Brandon Lyon Kerry Wood Takashi Saito Jake Peavy (he has +12 points, that's what 4-1 with a 2.22 ERA and 1.03 WHIP is worth) Tim Lincecum (4-1 with 1.49 ERA, +9 points, will probably have to bench him when he goes negative) Justin Duchscherer Brad Lidge Jose Valverde J.J. Putz Rafael Soriano (DL)
  22. this is reason to root for the cardinals:
