  1. great managing lou, he overmanages except when a move is warranted
  2. hopefully tomorrow's result is the same as the "automatic loss" to jake peavy
  3. pirates announcers have quite the boner for marmol for good reason good Lord that slider is scary good
  4. note that this is absolutely a terrible way to judge whether a guy will be a good baseball player.
  5. 425th place. just like last year, pitching is killing me. daniel cabrera has figured out how to pitch apparently, and jose contreras has forgotten that he's 75 years old and not good. bourn and pena have been studs. jose castillo has been a big disappointment at third base. juan pierre needs (a) more playing time and (b) to start playing worse.
  6. yes, 14th round. lincecum was just a late round flier; owings was a guy who could've been had if the cubs had ponied up somewhere from $500k to $1m, but they didn't. jim hendry needs a "i went way over slot money, and all i got was chris huseby, drew rundle, cliff andersen and jeff samardzija" tee-shirt
  7. (a) when did pat burrell become wildly popular such that he'll be elected to the all star team (b) geovany soto???
  8. back stiffness according to the des moines register... that's better than a lot of things it could've been.
  9. meh i don't blame the cubs for not keeping hamilton... it's hard to believe that a guy with that past who really hadn't played above A-ball could stick with a big league team, let alone one expected to contend for the division. it's an entertaining game of "what if," but not an egregious mistake.
  10. btw i hope the 80% of you who ranked vitters as the cubs' top prospect coming into this year are hanging your heads in shame.
  11. i shall again wear my soto shirt with pride tonight
  12. offer him a tim wakefield deal, $4M per year until he retires. see if he bites :P
  13. stuff the ballot for soto
  14. if anybody wants to invest on something potentially awesome, the cubs' 2008 baseball reference page is available for $150. or nsbb can pool its resources and make sure that some schmuck like david l. fishman, m.d. doesn't get his hands on it.
  15. btw did he get the shaving cream pie in the face?
  16. Your description "impatient, free swinging, and streaky" fits most power hitters. it does???? impatient and free swinging? Top 5 home run hitters in the NL last year: Fielder, Howard, Dunn, Holliday, (t) Berkman, Braun, Cabrera Top 5 home run hitters in the AL last year: A-Rod, Carlos Pena, Ortiz, Thome, (t) Konerko, Morneau of those 13 names, ONE (Braun) can be somewhat accurately described as impatient and free swinging. If "free swinging" means a lot of swings and misses, I stand by my statement. Those 10 hitters have a ton of strikeouts. they also have a lot of walks. nobody defines "free swinging" as "strikes out a lot." Free swinging players are soriano, juan pierre, corey patterson. regardless of whether they strike out a lot, they swing at a lot of balls outside the strike zone and don't get deep into counts. calling adam dunn or ryan howard "free swinging" would be about as wrong as you can get.
  17. best catcher in baseball? Y/Y?
