    I seem to remember him hitting an opposite field HR about 15 seconds after Tim made a post about him pulling everything. if you look at his wrigley hit chart, he hasn't hit anything anything to the right of the right-center field gap. i guess maybe that's a concern in that teams could start shading him to really pull the ball to left, but he's shown a good ability to drive pitches that are even on the outside corner.

    i hope rich goes back to those 7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 13 K games that he was having back in 2006, when we would all make fun of the cubs for being so stupid to not call him up.

    AGH. Come on. I interviewed some tribesmen before the draftin a remote section of Papua New Guinea, they don't know what baseball is, but they said what every****ingbody else in the universe said: MATT LATOS. JORDAN WALDEN. LARS ANDERSON. Not another one of these assclowns only the Hendry regime has heard of. See, this worked with the Angels because everyone actually knew who Adenhart was. He wasn't some jackass nobody that had us all scrambling for Google. Excuse me I'm going to turn into the Incredible Hulk now. yeah i really don't understand the late-round bonuses the cubs have been handing out. you don't hear anything about a drew rundle or a chris huseby and then all of a sudden "oh hey, the cubs gave this guy a million bucks." know who would've been a good guy to give a million bucks to? micah owings. but no, we've got chris huseby, a guy who can't get out of rookie leagues because he can't find the strike zone!!!

    i think he is still pulling the ball a lot, but outside pitches he can go up the middle and still drives them deep to center.

    well carlos pena and john lackey were worth about $37M last year alone, so if i'm understanding your analysis, you're extremely wrong. You're not understanding the analysis. It's not about what their on-field performance was worth. It's about what they would've gotten paid if, instead of giving them 6 years and $31M after one year, just as the Rox did with Tulowitzki, you went year-to-year instead. well i think you would be right on pena (though the story probably would've been different if he's not been sent to the minors and bounced around), but lackey has easily been worth more than $18.5M or $31M or whatever the number is. In both cases, going year-to-year would've been far cheaper, as I've illustrated.

    park factor was 109 last season... it may be relatively close to fenway but it's probably still the best hitter's park in baseball. it is to hitting what petco is to pitching, putting it another way.

Giving him starts in CF instead of Johnson, giving him some starts at SS to keep Theriot from wearing down and crashing like last year, giving him some spot starts at 2B. congratulations on not choosing the option of "bench theriot." i actually agree with you here on all counts, as long as he can play an adequate CF. but i'd probably put him out there with zambrano or dempster on the ground... with fly ball pitchers on the mound i'd go with guys who are more familiar with the position.

    I actually agree with this, and it's really the biggest reason that I'm frustrated by the signing. The cubs see a veteran who is completely cooked as the possible answer to the "hole" in CF, but can't see that a guy 15 years younger might end up being the more productive player this season. The Cubs seem to understand that it takes a guy some time to adjust and improve at various levels of the minor leagues, but for some reason it has always escaped the grasp of management that a guy isn't going to "figure it out" by going and beating up on pitchers at a level he's already dominated. pie can rake against minor league pitching; what's his incentive to make adjustments when he's hitting .350? no, the only way for pie to improve at this stage of his career is to get consistent playing time with the major league club. this is painfully obvious to about 80% of this board, which makes the cubs' ignorance in this respect all the more distressing. not every prospect is going to be kerry wood or geovany soto; many guys will learn how to hit or pitch at the big league level, and progress into productive major league players. unfortunately, that will probably happen for another organization.

    5 over. feeling optimistic over there jake? the pirates aren't ready to contend this year IMO, but there have been some promising signs, and i think that neal huntington has the organization headed in a much better direction (granted, it'd be hard to be worse than littlefield)

    Does it count that we had dinner with him mom to celebrate her birthday when the Cards were in Chicago five years ago? No, not kidding. Bottom line, you cannot rely on what the beat writers say because try as they might, they cannot separate their personal feelings from it all no more than anyone else can. Plus their time in the clubhouse is limited and the players try to watch their "Ps & Qs" more when there are eyes and ears around in the clubhouse. They base their opinions sometimes on how willing the guy is to give an interview and how that guy treats the media. There was a player who played at one time for both the Sox and the Cubs. When he was with the Sox, he was grumpy and mean and would only give you the time of day if you had a TV camera. When he was with the Cubs, he was a joy to be around and accomdated any interview request. A friend of mine who is a writer told me this story...just really disliked this player as a Sox but really got to like the guy as a Cub. I'll take Scott Eyre for $1000, Alex.     meh whatever, they should be happy that the six best year of his career came in a cardinal uniform (shocking, i know) and now the cubs are going to be wasting a starting spot on a guy who can't play any more.

Bitter distaste for a guy that had the nerve to play on another team and beat the Cubs. And stopped to watch a homerun. OMG! No Cubs have ever done that (or, for example, shown up opponents by doing a "hop" after every homerun)! I hate him for life and want to boo him and (insert gay joke here)! All this vitriole has very little to do with him possibly no longer being an effective player. i think you'd be surprised. most people on this board don't want him on the cubs because he sucks at baseball. Yeah, but they're not the ones pissing and moaning. oh i've pissed and moaned plenty, and not because edmonds used to play for the cardinals or is happy happy joy joy.

    berkman's SLG% last year was .339 on June 3 and everyone was trying to figure out where his power went. this year everyone is trying to figure out when he turned into roid-era bonds.

    Your description "impatient, free swinging, and streaky" fits most power hitters. it does???? impatient and free swinging? Top 5 home run hitters in the NL last year: Fielder, Howard, Dunn, Holliday, (t) Berkman, Braun, Cabrera Top 5 home run hitters in the AL last year: A-Rod, Carlos Pena, Ortiz, Thome, (t) Konerko, Morneau of those 13 names, ONE (Braun) can be somewhat accurately described as impatient and free swinging.

    let's also remember that dempster hasn't been a full-time starter in five years, and relying on him to pitch well in september and october would be a very dicey proposition.
