  1. eat my ass, cardinals
  2. the pittsburgh bullpen is damaso marte and dregs.
  3. due up: glaus (3-3, 2 BB) pinch hitter molina (4-5) bet the cards score here
  4. boy the pirates would've won this game already if the cards didn't have like a .550 BABIP in this game
  5. by the way, is this 9th inning pitching meltdown day in the NL central?
  6. it's the pirates and it's the cardinals, don't get too excited.
  7. eric gagne should be arrested for trying to burn down the stadium.
  8. jerry hairston is hitting almost .350... with a turnaround like this, you'd think the cards signed him, not the reds.
  9. http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/wp-content/uploads/blogger/_ZzSeX2ctOaA/R_J24bJaGzI/AAAAAAAABgY/Lu6EtfNOiGg/s320/gas_can.med.jpg
  10. we can't afford to sit around and lose games because he's not hitting. when soriano comes back, put derosa out in RF and send fukudome down to mesa or something to get straightened out.
  11. we can't? the cubs have a 5 game lead and are something like a 95% chance to make the playoffs.
  12. i think tommie herr just doubled for the cards.
  13. The bunt decision may be debatable, I could argue for or against it. However, not pinch running for Marshall, given that Fontenot was bunting, is unforgivably stupid. Obviously Lou was planning on bunting the runner to third and hoping for a sac fly. Surly he wasn't going to ask Marshall to score from third on a sac fly! If he would have gone ahead and substituted Cedeno (pinch runner extraordinaire) when Marshall was on second, I think he could have possibly/probably made it to third safely. oh i completely disagree. pinch running there is, IMO, a terrible move. when you have one pitcher left in the pen - a guy who hasn't been sharp and is prone to giving up the long ball - you don't do things like pinch running for your current pitcher. the increase in speed/instincts from marshall to cedeno is outweighed by the risk that the bunt is botched, or the next two hitters do not get the runner in from third. marshall could pitch plenty more in that game; let fontenot swing away. you're a pretty good bet to win the game in that half inning, and if you don't, you're still in decent shape pitching-wise.
  14. willits has had what, 60 ABs this year? i think he's a decent option as a 4th outfielder because he has great speed and i think he can sustain a high BABIP, not because i think his walk rate will last. fuld isn't particularly fast.
  15. oh good, the new pirates' pitcher has an ERA of 8.18. i guess that's an improvement.
  16. if it's 10 years, $23 million total, you're getting a hell of a steal.
  17. Does he have anything else to go to? Honestly I don't even care to look since it's been almost a guarantee that the Pirates will turn into garbage every year on the whole. probably not. the problem is that their starting pitchers are extremely unreliable and don't throw strikes. their starters' ERA is 5.57, the worst in baseball. OBP against .375, OPS against .852, WHIP 1.67 - again, all of these are the worst in baseball. besides texas, they've thrown the least innings. to put these numbers in perspective, jason marquis - who basically everyone on this board hates - has a 4.43 ERA, .338 OBP against, .732 OPS against, and 1.43 WHIP. he's MUCH better than the average pirates starter. i guess russell is between a rock and a hard place..... he can leave the starters out there to get destroyed every game, or he can overwork his bullpen to the point of exhaustion.
  18. http://assets.espn.go.com/photo/2008/0711/mlb_g_bowden_200.jpg nice sweater, jim. but seriously, this shouldn't be surprising at all. communications aren't all that great in latin america - it's a poorly-monitored system where everyone is a free agent. baseball is a multi-billion dollar business, and this is the area where it's probably easiest to cut corners (or outright cheat).
  19. yadier molina is hitting .312 now??? son of a bitch. 6-3 cards. keep sticking with this pitcher, russell, his sparkling ERA of 10.38 indicates that he will turn it around any minute now.
  20. i know, glendon rusch beat ben sheets :rotfl:
  21. sweet, bay and laroche are both on my home run derby team. one of them has actually been good this year.
  22. hey remember when jay bruce was good at baseball? i'm kidding, of course, but his OPS is down to .759. his plate discipline was fairly marginal in the minors. it looks like big league pitchers have adjusted to him and he hasn't adjusted yet, as evidenced by his nifty .513 OPS in the last month. most of the time i wouldn't think there is any reason for concern, but it's not like dusty is gonna help him with his approach.
  23. and the red sox are up by 8. in the words of satchel paige, "Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you."
  24. and yet they keep drafting college lefties in the first round year after year that was littlefield. this year they grabbed pedro alvarez, which was absolutely the right move. by most accounts they had a very good draft this year. as for jake, the pirates are better this year but it will be a long process. i think even he would tell you that their pitching is God-awful. the stain of dave littlefield does not wash away in a year.
  25. wonder who will hit 35 home runs - ryan ludwick, rick ankiel or both?
