  1. the pirates starting pitching is terrible. gorzelanny was terrible and has been farmed out; ian (oquendo) snell has a whip near 2.00, john van benschoten should be converted to an outfielder immediately, zach duke can't strike anyone out, and i don't know who the hell this guy is on the mound tonight. when paul maholm is an ace, your pitching staff is brutal.
  2. i saw a thing on 60 minutes about him... they were doing some experimental brain cancer treatments i think. as wonderful as modern medicine is, sometimes there are things that cannot be healed. from all accounts he was a good guy, and i wish his family and friends the best.
  3. i wouldn't mind keeping him around - they'd probably have to give him a low number next year (since marquis is sucking up $9.875M) and then once marquis' crappy contract is off the books, they could pay more to dempster beyond then. ideally, they could dump marquis and then let gaudin/hill/marshall fill the 5th spot next year.
  4. McLouth was 2-4 years younger than Fuld at their corresponding levels. yeah. to put it another way, mclouth's last year in the minors was in the same year of birth as sam fuld's first year in the minors. mclouth had some projectability; fuld is basically a finished product.
  5. He punched it up to 96, 97, 98 a few times, but it was his disgusting changeup that did the most damage. Ive seen him pitch a handful of times, but I apparently didn't pay enough attention, because that is a filthy pitch. Harden sat at 91, 92 for most of the game, but dialed it up when he went up in the zone. I have a feeling that his changeup being so untouchable allows him to not have to bring it 98 every time he throws a fastball. Since he still has the ability to ramp it up to 98 whenever he wants, though, it makes that pitch even more unhittable. A 98mph fastball will begin to look not as impressive after 90 pitches, but when you can run between 91-98 and then toss in an 81mph change that sweeps all the way across the plate, youve got a hell of a repetoire. Seriously, 5 1/3 innings and its easy to tell why this guy is undefeated in his career when his team scores 4 runs in a game. either len or bob mentioned that his fastball had a bigger range of velocities than most pitchers. like watching galllagher last night, almost all of his pitches were in the 92-94 range. i saw some fastballs from harden that were around 90-92, and then a few he dialed up into the 95-98 range. that's unusual.
  6. Not sure if you're referring to me, but I never said that. Actually never even came close to saying that. as raisin pointed out above, that's a common theme on this board. nobody said lee or aram "must be hurt" when they were in pretty bad funks this year. but zambrano, hill and marmol have all had a majority of the board thinking that they're hurt when in fact, they were just slumping (well zambrano and hill were; we don't know either way on marmol yet).
  7. according to BP's playoff odds, the cubs have a 13.2% chance of being the wild card. they also have the best chance of any team in baseball to win their division, however.
  8. good hitter performs poorly for a stretch - he's slumping good pitcher performs poorly for a stretch - he must be hurt
  9. lou sure sucked today. leaving marmol in was completely idiotic, and the bunt with fontenot in the 11th inning was also dumb (given the situation).
  10. slow lead runner with poor baserunning instincts, batter who has been hot, and the next batter is a guy who does not hit RHP well.
  11. let the hot bat hit away, or put runners in 2nd and 3rd for a guy who can't hit RHP?
  12. do you run for marshall? you are an idiot, brenly.
  13. or at least come in when marmol wasn't getting outs?
  14. i'd let marshall hit... he can go for a while and i sure trust him more than lieber.
  15. 4 of those balls were intentional, and if Soto walks you get Ronny Cedeno up there to win the game. It's not a bad situation to swing at the first pitch if you like it. It's probably true I'm just venting because of Lou and Marmol I am sorry i will try and keep it down, but if we lose its going to be disgusting. it's okay. there are good times to swing at the first pitch. cubs are hitting .374 when putting the first pitch in play, and he got a good pitch to hit and hit it pretty hard. just didn't work out.
  16. wood wasn't available, and in lou's twisted mind marmol was the only option.
  17. untrue. Yes it is. He has horrible range, a horrible arm, and has made numerous poor decisions in the field. he's a little below average. i guess if you want to ignore all the fielding metrics and say that he's horrible at everything, that's your prerogative. Yes, because we all know how reliable and accurate fielding metrics are. generally they're more reliable and accurate than someone losing his mind after a poor play.

  19. STFU on strike 1 durham, just because you were completely fooled and thought it was going to break into you doesn't mean that it wasn't right across the plate.
