  1. randy wolf and vicente padilla, it's a who's who of phillies rejects.
  2. i don't think that he'sa potential amazing defensive shortstop; from what i've read, he has a good chance to be above average but not necessarily elite defensively. i'm excited about him, though, because he has good defensive tools and also makes excellent contact despite facing pitchers a few years older than him. he's got to be pretty raw, having played only one year of short-season ball coming into 2009, and despite this he shows good ability to make contact and hit breaking pitches. even if that power never comes along, if he can put the ball in play a lot and square it up well, he should hit for a good average, which combined with plus defense will make him a big-time asset. it also seems like he has great drive to improve and confidence in his ability. and on a side note, it's really nice that the cubs are developing some middle infield prospects from latin america. it seems like most other organizations at least have some slick-fielding weak-hitting prospects who project as utility infielders in the big leagues, but the cubs have been terrible at developing latin middle infielders forever.
  3. It didn't have supplemental, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round picks. yeah but then they dropped $10M on samardzija then gave big bonuses to rundle and anderson, who suck, and huseby, who's a closer but came along a little bit. not having high draft picks hurts but the first round pick wasn't good, they overpaid for samardzija and then gave big bonuses to the wrong guys later in the draft.
  4. the cubs draft in 2006 was bad.
  5. Do you really think Iowa can beat Arkansas more than half the time? One thing Iowa can't do is score. One thing Iowa hasn't faced is a pass happy SEC offense like Arkansas. It's a good matchup for the Razorbacks. South Carolina's outstanding defense would keep the game close and be a coin flip game. Ditto for Ole Miss. Auburn's probably not a coin flip. Ironically enough Auburn's probably #7, 8 or 9 in the SEC. Hell, Tennessee would be a coin flip game too. Iowa can't score against an average defense, much less good ones that most of the SEC possess. So we can say that Iowa will probably score, on average between 14 and 17 points in those games. I like Arkansas's chances of putting up at least three touchdowns on Iowa. I like South Carolina's chances to put up 14-17 consistently. I like Tennessee's chances of being able to put up 14-17 consistently. It's pretty damn close. wait so iowa's "can't score" offense won't do much against arkansas' terrible defense, but arkansas' offense will put up points pretty easily against a very good iowa defense? and tennessee's offense would be able to do anything against iowa's defense?
  6. no there's not. there are two great teams and then a bunch of decent but flawed teams, and two teams that suck. aside from the big ten's lack of top-end teams the conferences are pretty similar.
  7. name the 3rd best team in the Pac 10. hell, name the 4th best SEC team. Ole Miss, Arkansas, Auburn, South Carolina? scary. All of whom would probably be a coin-flip against #1 Big Ten team big bad Iowa. not according to the ratings that you're using as a basis for your argument here.
  8. interesting way of framing your argument, because the SEC has two teams with a 93 rating and the pac 10 has two teams with high 80s, which cause the conference average to be pretty high. penn state's 80.42 would put them at #4 in the SEC and #5 in the Pac 10, while Wisconsin's 78.18 would put them at #6 in the SEC and #8 in the Pac 10. so #3 in the big ten is not like a below average team in either conference.
  9. cincy radio station trolls the buckeyes
  10. Yet, you have no problem watching Penn St? this doesn't make any sense. Penn St. is mediocre, they just win 10 games because they schedule middle school teams. they're easily among the top half of the big ten, probably something like #3 or #4, while northwestern and indiana are in the bottom half of the league and probably among the 3 or 4 worst teams in the league. by the way, northwestern and indiana wouldn't even have a chance at being bowl eligible if they didn't play the same middle school-caliber teams that penn state is playing.
  11. WOW.. I am really intrigued by this kid... Han Ram the second if he fills out maybe? Which will make it all the more maddening when hes traded for a middle reliever in his mid 30's or a Steve Traschle-esque 5th starter at the 2010 deadline. The Cubs as an organization value Starlin Castro more than any other prospect in the system so that's not happening. yeah but they traded jon garland for matt karchner 10 years ago, and lou brock for ernie broglio like 40 years ago, so that definitely means they're going to trade their best prospect for a mediocre major league player.
  12. that seems a little overboard; hanley showed better batting averages and power through the minors, gets deeper into counts and has a bigger/taller frame. But Han Ram didn't play this well at this age did he? I'm pretty sure at the end of the day Han Ram will display more power than Castro but if Castro develops his supposed potential, i would expect to steal more and hit for better average than Han Ram. i don't know why you'd expect that, hanley has a BA of .316 in the majors and won a batting title this year, and stole 51 bases his first two years. hanley has better speed and power potential and will probably hit for better average overall. saying that castro won't be as good offensively as the best-hitting shortstop in baseball is not really a huge slight.

  14. it doesn't matter; if you're on tv you should be able to pull at least average-looking tail, not the homeliest-looking girl in town.

  16. wow is that an uggo.

  18. How is Granderson a little Soriano? His numbers this year were very Soriano like... at least, Texas-era Soriano. But I think those numbers are clearly an aberration, though they were still pretty impressive for a center fielder. Either way, if Soriano were more like Granderson I don't think people would be any happier. Granderson is great. I don't know what A-Cal is talking about. here's to hoping he pulls his head out of his ass next season...i guess i am just bitter because he was on one of my fantasy squads this season and i couldn't trade him and every time i benched him...HR... :sorry: granderson got boned over on batted balls this year... he's really good.
  19. yes i'm really excited to see which mediocre big ten team goes to a bowl that you'd have to pay me to watch.
  20. I agree that those things are true (he's 19 and not big), and those projected increased in power are very, very possible. And I fully agree that he's our best prospect. But Gathright, Fuld, Joe Girardi, Neifi, and Izturis were all 19 once, too, with the possibility of growing into more power with time. But they never did. Castro might grow into Renteria power. Or he might not. How good will he be if he doesn't? It would be foolish to assume he won't grow into some power. But it might also be foolish to be too certain that he will. Time will tell, as always. right but couldn't one also argue that it might be foolish to assume that vitters will learn how to take a walk and play defense?

  22. it's pretty hilarious for a guy with a .020 IsoD and .043 IsoP to have an OPS of 1.107.
  23. yeah missed that one... looks like the line is about even. i will probably pick iowa because they apparently cannot lose. Indiana at Northwestern isn't a game of note (relative to this board)? maybe i should have said "games of note to me" because i sure as hell do not care about the dregs of the big ten.
  24. yeah castro is 19 years old and weighs 160 lbs, he has plenty of time to develop better power. the comp i keep coming back to is edgar renteria, who in his prime was good for about 35 doubles and 10-15 hr a year. i think castro can hit with that type of power. imo he's our best prospect by a pretty good margin.
