  1. fourth inning for cashner: 4 pitch K, ground out, 5 pitch walk, ground out. he was taken out after 4 innings despite throwing only 44 pitches. final line was 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 4 GO/4 FO, 44 pitches, 25 strikes. of course the guy who relieved him gave up a single and home run right away.
  2. cashner's third inning: four pitch walk, seven pitch K, pop out, fly out castro grounded a single to left on a 1-1 pitch in the bottom of the third; vitters flied out on a 2-0 pitch. it's 10-0 mesa after 3.
  3. if you're a small market team with 12 fans (like the padres) that's pretty much the only choice. they can't go out and spend big coin on top free agents, so the only way to win is to build from within and plug holes with mid-level free agents.
  4. second inning, cashner has another 1-2-3 inning with a K, castro lines out to right on 1-0 pitch and vitters hits another ground ball single to cf on 3-2 pitch.
  5. castro and vitters each had ground ball singles to CF; castro's was on the first pitch and vitters was on a 2-0 pitch. castro is SS and vitters is DH. cashner is starting got a ground out, line out and strikeout for a perfect first.
  6. i was shocked to see that we blew a two-goal lead. oh wait john stevens is still our head coach so i wasn't shocked at all.
  7. Iowa is #1 in the computers, so you have a good case What's haunting Iowa is the drop after the UNI game. They were 21 in the preseason. They dropped to 34 after that game. It wasn't until week 5 after beating PSU that they got back into the rankings. If they beat UNI by 24 but have a closer game against ISU or Arizona, they're ranked at least 6th in the human polls right now and probably have a good shot at 4. And if they were 4th in the human polls with #1 in the computers, they're ahead of Texas at 3rd in BCS and could be in the driver's seat. They beat ISU who is turning out to be decent 35-3 on the road and didn't rise. They were up 17 on a now ranked Arizona team until garbage time and didn't rise. If they would have needed a miracle finish at the end against either of those two they probably never would have dropped. frankly if you need a blocked field goal to beat a i-aa team, you probably should be punished for that. not that iowa shouldn't be able to overcome that, but i wouldn't vote them ahead of the other undefeated teams because they've won on two last-second plays and had a number of other close calls.
  8. can i start up the jacquizz rogers for heisman bandwagon? he's really damn good and none of the "popular" heisman picks impress me much.
  9. kicked florida's ass tonight. richards hammered booth and got 5 minutes for intent to injure even though he didn't leave his feet, used his shoulder to finish the check and laid the hit a split second after booth had dished off the puck on a pass. it'll be fun when richards gets 10 games for the type of hit that scott stevens made at least once a year without being punished.
  10. he's generally considered a terrific umpire but yes, he botched two calls. bucknor is horrible and i'm glad he won't be in the world series.
  11. iowa football has a complete horseshoe up their butt this year. i did pick them today because after last week i just gave up picking against them. i think they'll be the first team in history to go 13-0 with a point differential of like 50 points.
  12. isn't utah usually good?
  13. i don't blame lou for this, but that's why managers should have absolutely zero input on the mlb draft.
  14. i believe there was a strike or something in 2006, and no title was awarded.
  15. is bradford going to stay at OU? what a complete disaster this year has been for him.
  16. that guy has way too much time on his hands, but at least he's using his wasted time to amuse the internet.
  17. 8/9 runs coming on homerun balls. If the Jaramillo haters are correct, you'll get your wish. the phillies (and yankees actually) are both a big [expletive] you to all the people who say you need to play small ball to win in the playoffs. actually most teams that have won are the exception to that dumb-ass rule.
  18. once again let me give a special word of gratitude to my father. instead of rooting for the phillies, who i grew up 10 miles away from and have won a world series and two pennants in the last two years, i root for a team 700 miles away that last won the pennant in 1945 and last won the world series over 100 years ago. thanks dad!
  19. vitters is batting 5th for mesa tonight and hit a 2-run double to deep left on a 1-1 pitch. welington is hitting 6th and hit a sharp ground ball single to 1b in his first ab. castro is not playing :(
  20. when i close my eyes and dream about what i want the cubs offense to be, i see the phillies lineup.
  21. throwing a hittable first-pitch fastball to pedro feliz has to be one of the dumbest things a pitcher can do. that's what he does, hit first pitch fastballs.
  22. i love that the dodgers are starting phillies rejects against them and the phillies are getting big hits from guys like victorino and werth, who they got from the dodgers for basically nothing.
  23. hopefully dr. nick riviera performed the surgery.
  24. And Mississippi State. And Kentucky. Except for the part where Miss State is on par with Minnesota and closer to Missouri than it is Iowa State or Baylor, for example. Oh Kentucky's ahead of the likes of Michigan, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and is on par with Wisconsin. i'd [expletive] a brick of kentucky beat oklahoma.
