  1. so why doesn't he get a dui or something?
  2. well that's good to hear.
  3. i'm interested to see what the offseason publications have to say about him. last year he was an interesting prospect in rookie ball who hardly anybody had seen play. this year he played the full year at two more prominent levels, became one of the most highly-regarded prospects in the system, and now is tearing it up in the AFL, which any respectable scouting service is watching closely. there should be a lot more info and opinion on him now.
  4. there's no way that colorado is the whitest state. ever been to maine, new hampshire or vermont? if you run into a black person there he or she is probably lost.
  5. i don't think it's unreasonable. think about it, last year he hit fairly well in rookie ball, now this year he is hitting fairly well but up 3/4 levels and is leading a fall league of top prospects in batting average even though he's the second-youngest player in the league. clearly he's improving by leaps and bounds, and as a 6'1" 160 lb guy he still has room to fill out. he might only end up being a decent player but with how much he's improved in a year, and how much projectability he has left, what's to say he doesn't turn into an elite player? there's a pretty wide range of possibilities here.
  6. more guys playing today... so far: castro: ground ball single to lf on 2-0 count sac fly to cf on 1-1 count fly out to cf on 3-2 count (9 pitch ab) brenly: ground ball single to cf on 1-2 count fly out to cf on 1-2 count cashner: 4 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, HBP, 4 GO/4 FO, 49 pitches/35 strikes. all the hits were singles - "ground ball, fly ball, ground ball, sharp ground ball, line drive" (according to gameday). no radar today, unfortunately. james russell is on in relief of cashner.
  7. nomar's probably a good comp. he always had fairly low walk rates and made a lot of contact, hit for good average. it might be a stretch for starlin to hit for that much doubles/home run power but he'll also be better defensively than nomar. i like that comp... nomar with a little less power and more D.
  8. 123 million for 10 players? sounds good.
  9. i made this point last page and then completely forgot about it. you're right, it's fine as long as iwamura plays average or better this year. if he plays awful then it's a bad move, but you can't really predict that.
  10. Superior in your opinion.(not saying you're wrong) I'd bet most people think Johnny Damon is better than all the free agent OFs of last year(2 of which got 3 year deals) Plus, he's a winner. Damon should get not better than a deal between what Abreu and Burrell got last offseason. seeing how burrell played this year, damon should definitely do better than him.
  11. This one won't be settled as quickly as the Phillies/Yankees series, but let's get out our darts and take a shot. How will Starlin Castro's career path go? For the purposes of comps I'm comparing him to MLB shortstops, since that's the position he currently plays. Also, since one is generally supposed to compare a player to guys of similar ethnicity (see every white NBA player compared to Steve Nash or Larry Bird), I will use mostly Latin American comps.
  12. as middle infielders who were on an accelerated timetable and played well in AA at age 19, i can offer a few suggestions: -wilson betemit (didn't have contact skills that castro has, but better power potential... obviously has been a disappointment) -renteria (already been discussed... probably my favored comp right now) -angel berroa? (he got to AA at 21 but i think he might have been one of the people who aged a couple of years magically) -brandon phillips was a year later... has a shorter and stockier build than starlin though. i dunno, it is pretty hard to come up with a good comp because starlin's contact skills are ahead of most latin american middle infielders who reach AA in their teens. there may be more u.s. born players but because they're generally not drafted until age 17/18, they usually don't reach AA that quickly unless they're a-rod good.
  13. kaberle has been in trade rumors for like 8 years. i'm pretty sure there was talk of trading eric lindros to the leafs for kaberle and antropov (we ended up trading him to the rangers). then about 2 years ago, supposedly we had a deal to send jeff carter and a first round pick to toronto for kaberle but he invoked a no trade clause (if this is true, thank you tomas). the leafs have tended to ask for a lot in return and he also likes toronto a lot, so at this point i will be surprised if he is moved.
  14. How does it fill two holes? Jake Fox has almost no value to a National League club. Stick him at 1B and let him grow into it. Assuming he will hit, he won't be the worst 1B in baseball. sounds like a ringing endorsement.
  15. :pig: jersey kinda has a point though, people are pissed off at hamels right now and feel like he quit on the team (which he didn't, but whatever). that being said, the phillies are a smart, well-run organization and i'd be very surprised if they don't tell hamels to just relax and recharge his batteries in the offseason. the fans are fickle but they also know that hamels was probably the biggest reason that they won in 2008, and i don't think there's really much of a groundswell to run him out of town.
  16. We have some pride. The reality is, Delwyn Young is not an everyday major league 2B. OK, this argument could be made about some other guys on the team too. But, allegedly, we have guys in the minors who realistically could make a push for those jobs this year. We have absolutely no one for the middle infield with more than a remote chance of being an everyday player this year. yeah the problem with the pirates is that brandon moss, nyjer morgan and at least two of the five starting pitchers should not be in the positions they're in. i'm just saying, save the $4M, lose 3 more games with delwyn at 2B and roll the money into international free agency and the draft. it's not popular with the fans but it's the right move long term.
  17. i think people have forgotten that hermida has played baseball in 2008 and 2009.
  18. people keep saying this but it isn't really true. the playoffs are not just a crap shoot. there have been things that are proven to win in the playoffs - front line power pitching, good bullpens, good defense. for a lot of this decade the yankees have lacked good front line power pitching (mussina, pettitte are good pitchers but fall more on the side of finesse); they've always had rivera as an anchor but their middle relief has been problematic for years; their defense has declined as a number of players got older (bernie williams, jeter, sheffield, posada). it's not a surprise that they've struggled in the playoffs. i made my own rules.
  19. Ryan Howard taking an o-fer didn't help either. yeah, he was always going to struggle in this series with all the LHP the yankees threw out there. his line against lhp was .207/.298//.356/.653. charlie manuel is generally a good manager, but i have no idea why he still hits howard in the cleanup spot against lefties. he's awful against them whereas werth destroys them. letting hideki matsui look like babe ruth kinda hurt too.
  20. if you hate someone because of the color of their skin, i'm pretty sure that's racism. No its not, I think it depends on why they hate the person. If I hate my neighbor and he's white, does that mean i'm racist? It can get confusing but its hard to explain, i think you have to talk from their perspective to understand. In all honesty I still feel White people are the most racist but other races aren't too far behind. no, it could mean that he's a d-bag. but you were suggesting that black people are hateful toward white people in general, not just because their white neighbor is an a-hole who passes out on their lawn and borrows things without giving them back.
  21. if you hate someone because of the color of their skin, i'm pretty sure that's racism.
  22. the phillies really needed cole hamels to be cole hamels in this series. if he had pitched like he did the past two seasons, that would have given the phils a #1/2 that was better than the yankees' top 2, and they would have been able to go with two top pitchers in four of their games. instead hamels has been lousy this year, esp. in the playoffs, and they had to start past-his-prime pedro twice. can't really account for that sort of thing - i thought the phillies did well to build a team that was set up to repeat, but when your ace turns into an average pitcher, it's hard to do that.
  23. They dominated in a tough division, and the money actually brought results. I think you can criticize and say what you want about the money, but the only other team that got a vote, Boston, spent a ton themselves. There's no question the Yankees are the team of the decade and their results were fantastic. The luck nature of the playoffs negates any negativity of only winning 2 WS with 9 playoff appearances. the red sox spent "only" $1.168B, or about more than $50M less per season, and appeared in only one fewer playoff and won the same number of world series.
  24. since the yankees spent $1.7 billion in the decade and only won two world series i disqualified them and voted for someone else.
  25. alabama could use a bona fide quarterback THIS year.
