  1. without reading the article - i'm feeling particularly lazy right now - those teams probably made the world series in large part because they had good pitching, so there was a pretty good chance that they'd regress even without the added innings on their arms.
  2. boy he sure is having trouble finding a few examples out of that zillion he mentioned.
  3. What have you been reading? Of course they can afford him. Sure they can. But they can't afford to keep him and the team around him for long. You know that. carpenter will turn 37 next year and his contract is up either this offseason or next one ($15M option for next year). lohse's terrible contract goes away after next year. wainwright is reasonably priced through 2013 (well he's slated to get $12M in 2013, but for a pitcher as good as he is, that's a bargain). the real question to me is, do they raise their payroll up above $100m (which frankly is where it probably should be, given their popularity and attendance) or stay around $90m? it'll be awfully tough to have holliday and pujols taking up half their payroll, and if they plan to keep wainwright, that's something like $60-65m on three guys. just not doable with a $90m payroll. and yeah, they're going to have to rely on bargain bin acquisitions throughout their pitching staff and lineup.
  4. i prefer to encourage posters who repeatedly ask easily-answered questions to actually use the internet to answer those questions.
  5. is google not available on your computer? or were you just unable to spell his name properly during your google search?
  6. enjoy having one of the worst bullpens in baseball every year.
  7. I dont know...4th smallest market in baseball and even if the Cardinals payroll was at 120 million, he'd make up 25% of their payroll. I realize that they operate and produce revenues that a mid-market club would, but thats only 15 million less than what the Cubs are spending this year. I personally think they would have a hard time fielding a competitive team with a $30 million player on the payroll. it's not the 4th smallest market in baseball. it's the 7th smallest, and that is just basing things on the standard TV market. obviously the cardinals have a lot bigger pull in the midwest than their immediate TV market - all of southern IL is cardinals country, same with pretty much all of MO except for the area around KC. plus it's a very passionate fan base. they might be behind places like miami and tampa, but nobody gives a [expletive] about baseball there.
  8. thanks for the tip. i can see why halladay was available. he's awesome but 889 points is a hell of a lot to carry when reasonably good position players put up almost 500.
  9. will move this from the 'hawks thread since it's really off topic: we're okay cap-wise for this year, and next year we'll have zherdev coming off the books. leino is UFA next year, and whether we can keep him really depends on the TV deal and how much the cap goes up. we could use a goalie, but our team as currently constructed does not have the cap room for a top-flight goalie, we're too good to trade just draft picks for a strong goalie (assuming that there are any even available) and trading guys like van riemsdyk, giroux, coburn, etc would just weaken the team in front of the goalie. so it's not a bad strategy to build a very strong team with mediocre goaltending; it got us to the finals last year and the hawks won the cup with a guy who was not great.
  10. is there a place that shows how much of the 2000 point limit is used up and which of the players are exempt because of the three-year rule? also, i can't seem to find how many points each player accumulated last season - the stats options are (3 Year Avg · YTD Stats · Yesterday · Last 7 Days · Last 14 Days). are their keeper points based on their 3 year average? thanks.
  11. a zillion pitchers have come back on two days' rest after throwing over 100 pitches, thrown over 60 pitches and been fine? please share with us a few of these zillion examples (and keep them within the last 10 years; i don't care what al spaulding or mordecai brown did)
  12. thanks guys. i'm working now but have the day off tomorrow, so i'll read up on the league details and figure out who i want to keep. as for payment, give me a little time on that - my money is in australia so i have to figure out what is the best way to pay someone in the u.s. $9 without paying like $20 in fees.
  13. can he play goalie? i don't really like versteeg that much, but our first round pick is going to be very late in the first round so it's not a big deal. we're crazy deep at forward and strong on defense as well... just have that good ol' achilles heel that we always have.
  14. either put in your mop-up guy and let him pitch until his arm falls off - and if it does, who really cares - or put in a utility player and have him pitch until you lose. those should be your options as manager. unless you're an idiot, in which case you put one of your best starting pitchers in and let him throw a bunch of pitches in relief in a next-to-meaningless game.
  15. so you use the #1 recruit in the country that year, a guy who has probably been professional since he was like 12, to back up what you're saying? great. "barack obama became president of the united states, looks like we can put the whole inequality and race relations thing to bed now."
  16. i voted for da bum
  17. actually zambrano was going to be the closer.
  18. there should be a support group for pitchers who were ruined by dusty.
  19. You know, if we had just signed lincecum in 2003 when we drafted him in like the 90th round (when he was nowhere near what he is now and had no interest in signing a pro contract), our fortunes might have been very different!
  20. everyone once you're done watching the replay of bruins-habs, watch the replay of isles-pens. the isles dressed some minor league goons, got a huge lead and then spent the rest of the game trying to beat up max talbot for a clean hit in a previous game. i hate the pens, but man the isles have been a complete embarrassment in this game.
  21. why don't we just think about if the cubs hadn't skipped over albert pujols with their first 12 or so picks in the 1999 draft? why this obsession with hamilton?
  22. Different guy hahaha i have thought for like 5 years that they were the same joe cowley - after all, cowley isn't a common last name and lots of ballplayers end up covering a team they played for after they retire. side note, baseball player joe cowley was one of my favorite phillies of all time. here's his game log for the phillies in 1987: april 11 vs cubs: 0.2 ip, 3 h, 7 r, 4 er, 4 bb, 0 k april 16 vs mets: 1.0 ip, 4 h, 5 r, 5 er, 4 bb, 1 k april 22 vs expos: 5.1 ip, 6 h, 5 r, 4 er, 3 bb, 3 k, 1 hr, 2 hbp april 28 vs expos: 4.0 ip, 6 h, 6 r, 4 er, 4 bb, 1 k, 1 hr may 3 vs reds: 0.2 ip, 2 h, 3 r, 3 er, 2 bb, 0 k released. overall line: 11.2 ip, 21 h, 26 r, 20 er, 17 bb, 5 k, 2 hr, 2 hbp, 15.43 ERA, 3.26 WHIP
  23. i too would like to participate
  24. WAR the last four seasons (using B-R) fielder: 16.1 pujols: 34.3 so pujols has been more than twice as valuable as fielder. and even if you don't like WAR because you're not too sure about defensive metrics (but they probably have it right with pujols and fielder - pujols is excellent defensively and fielder is below average), two of the last four years, fielder has had an OPS below .900. are you really going to be happy with that for $25m a year when you could have a guy whose worst single-season OPS is .955?
  25. i could not disagree more. and why do you think that pujols might be using steroids but don't seem to think there's a possibility that prince is?
